Welcome to the Official Soompi Photoshop Tutorials thread (awesomely pinned by the admins).

Check out the index of tutorials below. These are tutorials put together by Soompi users who have a pretty good handle on using Photoshop. Some are answers to requests, and others contain common (and some not so common) techniques and methods.

This thread is perpetuated by a great team of Photoshoppers here on Soompi who are dedicated to helping those not as experienced or those who are just stuck. Feel free to browse the entire thread, as it is a great source of artistic inspiration, as well as a great resource for 'how tos' and 'how not-tos'.

The list of contributors grows every day so an actual list is tough to keep up. But please remember to thank whoever is able to answer your questions directly, or whoever it may have been that made the tutorial that you just enjoyed.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Just a quick note on how to ask for help with your Photoshop issues.
Be specific: 'How do you make a picture look better?' will not get as many results as 'How do you remove unwanted spots and smooth out skin textures?'
Show an example (or examples) of what you're referring to: Either post the image or a link to the image in question. And be very specific about the elements in that image you're referring to.
State your level of experience with Photoshop: 'I know how to erase parts of a layer, but I'm having trouble making the edges soft enough to blend.'
Check the entire thread: Your question may be answered already in the thread either as a whole tutorial or as part of another tutorial. The INDEX is a good place to start.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Note: I'm having issues with my browser not going straight to the post in question when clicking specific links.
If this is the case for you, you may have to scroll a bit to see the tutorial you're looking for (I think this happens when an image someone has posted is no longer being loaded, and the page 'shrinks' to accomodate).
There's nothing I can do about that, really. My apologies for any added Carpal Tunnel Syndrome phobias.

Revised Note (by Tailo):
1. Please report any broken links.**
2. Please notify us if any of the posted tutorials have been deleted by the user.**
3. If a tutorial does not load properly, you may need to scroll up or down the page.
4. If a tutorial is not on the linked page, look on the previous page of the thread. Some post IDs on Soompi just do not work sometimes.

I'm on Photoshop CS 2 (which has made aligning objects and text much simpler by adding 'smart guides' that pop on and off when an alignment point is hit), but finding the absolute center on all images is quite simple with most versions of Photoshop.

1. Go to 'View>Rulers' to turn rulers on (It may be in pixels or inches, depending on your settings - right click on the ruler itself to change the measurement units if you wish)

2. Go to 'View' and make sure 'Snap' is checked.

3. Click on either the top or left ruler, and drag out a guide (a single blue line that you can use for...guidance), and try to 'feel' it 'snap' in to place when you get to the center of the image (make sure you have the background layer active, as it'll snap to the center of whatever layer you're on). Don't worry if you let go too soon. Hold the Ctrl key and move the cursor over the guide. It'll turn in to a two headed arrow. You can then click and drag to move the guide again. Moving it over one of the rulers and letting go will make that guide disappear.

4. Find the middle with guides from both the left and top ruler, and you'll have your absolute center.

5. Any object or text will 'snap' to the center when placed near it. Object's edges, centers, tops and bottoms will also snap to guides.

6. Guides are your friends.

7. Guides will not show up in your final image. Even if you leave them visible.

colorize black&white pictures

Well, here's the thing.
I can't draw.
I can't draw any thing.
And to be an effective 'colorizer', you sort of need that trait.
I don't have it.
When I draw stick figures, people ask 'What's that?'
Yes. I'm that bad.

'What's your point, Jason?'

I don't do colorizing.

'Boo! You suck!'

Colourising?

What I do is

- ALWAYS DUPLICATE THE LAYERS A LOT OF TIMES BEFORE WORKING smile.gif

- Go to Image > Adjust > Color Balance (Or Ctrl + cool.gif and fool around with the settings. Or you could use Variations (also under Image > Adjust).

Just erase the unnecessary parts. Then go onto your next layer and do the same thing.

Yeah, I'm not the world's best explainer. Maybe someone else could explain haha. Because I kinda just fooled around with it myself when i first colourised; i didn't follow a tut. >________< """

I think you pretty much covered the basics.
Anyone with two ideas about how to use Photoshop will figure this out.

As for me, I generally find that I don't learn anything until I encounter a situation where I need to learn a new skill.
And I've never needed to colorize anything.

I wish I could draw.

go jason!!! i'll stop ny everytime to see ur tuts!

all I know.. colourizing is just making a black n white photograph look realistic coloured..
many people just colourize by adding colours in new layers and setting them in different blend mode.. for me its usually soft light, colour burn or overlay ^^

Feel free to move it wherever you deem necessary.
People are probably used to seeing the Photoshop thread there, anyway.

And it would be awesome if every one did contribute to the tutorials.
The regulars like Muddie an jeNn are great at them, and I suspect that they'll be a big part of this thread.
But that shouldn't discourage anyone else from lending a hand or mouse click.
It only works if we all pitch in, and scratch each others' backs.

The index will be a fantastic idea for this thread once the tutorials start building up.
If necessary, I'll let one of the admins know to give you 'editing privaledges' to this thread so you can add/remove as you please.
if that's not possible, we'll work something else out.

Maybe I'll give you my account info so you can post regularly.
Just as long as you promise not to hit on any boys with my account.

I go there all the time for tutorials. I usually just experiment and see what happens though. I hardly even use brushes laugh.gif

Can you post a list of really good brush sites? Brushes that are sort of like icons that I can put next to/underneath the text so my graphic will look more finished? Like these:

This is a specific tutorial requested by a Soompi member.
I tried to keep the feel and style as close to their example image as I could without completely duplicating it.

The images I use in the tutorial can be downloaded as a zip file here.

When I need a specific type of brush or custom shape for Photoshop, aside from making my own, I generally visit Adobe's Studio Exchange.
