I'm really into listening to lose classic old school love songs..
Ahh!! But I need to download some new songs.
Can anyone recommend any others??? smile.gif

I've been loving most of Etta James songs lately <3

Right now, my favorite old school ballad is Frank Sinatra - It Had to be You. Well I don't think you can go wrong with anything Frank Sinatra haha. Julie London is great too. If you ever watched 'V for Vendetta', her song 'Cry Me a River' is the song playing when Evie and V dance together.

I'd like to know what other songs soompiers recommend because I'm looking for new songs to download myself.

This is more jazz, but I love Harry Connick Jr.'s (you might know him as Leo from 'Will and Grace') covers and songs. He also did 'It Had to be You' but more upbeat. I also like 'Wink and a Smile'.

And Michael Bublé, he does more jazz and swing, but he's great. I've actually been listening to his cover of 'Sway' almost the whole day!
YUNA!
this song is so old school, i think i was around two when it was created.

mariah carey - hero.

it is. the. best. mariah carey song. EVER.

Have you tried Billy Holiday? Some of her songs are rather sad, but her version of "It Had to Be You" is really good. Quite different from Frank Sinatra's (whom I also love).

That's all I can really think of right now. Oh have you given Pink Martini a try? They've got some good stuff.

you'll love nina simone
you'll be shocked when you hear her hehe
i love "the more i see you"

i don't know which classics you know but you might like ray charles' "georgia on my mind" and i love his solo version of "somewhere over the rainbow"

ooh and aretha franklin's "do right woman"

gladys knight and the pips "midnight train to georgia"

these are like my absolute favourites

and natalie cole's "this will be" this one is really famous

If you like Jazz standards you should try Patti Austins tribute to Ella Fitzgerald. It's awesome. It's called for Ella. Also the Good Night Good Luck Soundtrack is very good Diane Reeves is the singer. Great Album.
I've also been listening to The Very Best of Jane Monheit and Renee Olstead two good albums.

There's a Gene Kelly movie marathon and I just have to mention these songs:

Gene Kelly - Singin' in the Rain
The whole piece is such a joy to watch on-screen too!

Frank Sinatra and Betty Garrett - You're Awful
I love LOVE this song, the lyrics to the song is just so cleverly written!

also

Al Green - I'm So In Love with You
This is the song that plays in the Tide Simple Pleasures commercial laugh.gif
Korowa
Ray Charles - I Can't Stop Loving You

I remember hearing this on Metropolis, one of the best songs I've ever heard.

I don't know who sings it, but the title of the song is "What a Wonderful World" that's a good classic too.

leonard cohen, songs from leonard cohen 1968.

If you're looking for really old school music, you should check out The Temptations. "My Girl", "Sugar Pie Honey Bunch", and "Build me up Buttercup" are awesome.

Other other artists I would recommend:
Billy Joel (any Billy Joel song)
Diana Ross and the Supremes ("Can't Hurry Love")
Sam Cooke ("Wonderful World")
Smokey Robinson and the Miracles ("Track of My Tears")
Marvin Gaye
Jackson 5 ("I'll Be There")
Al Green
The Beatles
Elvis Presley

For more recent artists:
Boyz II Men
Michael Bolton ("How am I Supposed to Live Without You")
Lionel Richie
Bryan Adams
Rod Stewart
Richard Marx
Phil Collins
Eric Clapton
All-4-One

I miss well-written music... *sigh*

Jane Monheit is def a great singer but hardly old-school; she is a comptemporary jazz-standards singer. Same with Renee Olstead, though she still has a way to go before truely showing what she can do. Has talent but is totally raw ATM.

Not sure if you're only looking for jazzy love songs, but if you're ok with rock, I would suggest the one and only Beatles. One of my all time favourites is "Norwegian Wood' off their Rubber Soul cd or 'Something' off their infamous Abbey Road cd.

You can also try this "Maybe I'm Amazed" by Paul McCartney, which is off his first solo album after the break-up of the Beatles.

I also love the song "Ruby Tuesday" by the Rolling Stones. I've recently watched the movie "Children of Men" which had a cover of this song. Was pretty impressed.

If you're looking for jazz classics in particular, try out any of the jazz-standards by Sarah Vaughen, Ella, Billy, Dinah Washington, or my all-time-favorite, the one and only NINA SIMONE biggrin.gif

I have most of the cd's of the artists listed above. ALL of Ella, all of Billy, all of Sarah, all of Dinah, and most of Nina.
I have every album of beatles. So if you're interested, I'd be happy to upload them in lossless format (flac.) for you.

I really love Ella and Mrs. Holiday! I think Michael Buble is love. I really love "Only Have Eyes for You" by the Flamingos. I also recommend Eva Cassidy. She has such a beautiful voice so anything by her is good.

great thread, got alot of dl-ing to do

I recommend

Aretha Franklin:
R.E.S.P.E.C.T (that's if u dont hav it)
Do Right Woman
A Change is gonna come
Drowning in my own tears

Louis Armstrong - what a wonderful world, hello dolly, as time goes by, moonriver

Stevie Wonder - living just enough for the city

Billie Holiday

Ray Charles - hit the road jack

um....do u want old school rock as well

i think someone already recommended the Beatles. Paul McCartney's Maybe Im Amazed is great

Queen - pretty much everything they do is fantastic

Aerosmith - Crazy, Janie's Got A Gun, Dream On, Love in the Elevator

what about folk - Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell
just case u were feeling revolutionary

did someone recommend Mariah Carey?? unless ur 5 years old, Mariah can hardly be categorized as old school.
