What parts and functions.

Thats where everything connects to.
The cpu, ram, cards such as video sound wifi, the drives, and power.

Most motherboards have a northbridge and south bridge (some only have a northbridge that does everything). In pictures with motherboards its generally the square near the CPU with a heatsink on it. Common ones are ViA, Nforce, intel, and ATI. They direct the data between the CPU and the rest of the computer. The southbridge connects to the northbridge and helps it. It usually controls the PCI, IDE (for drives), USB, sound, and ethernet. As I said, they are often merged as one chip now north and southbridge all in one. Some even do the video processing for integrated video there.

The motherboard is also the home of the BIOS, thats what you see when you first turn on the computer. It has all the basic stuff the computer needs to start and figure out what type of hardware is connected.
