sorry if theres a topic like this here already.. but i wanted to kno if anyone here is majoring in journalism?

recently in geography class.. we were watching an episode of oprah and it was something about young faces that shook the nation? something like that.. and it showed a reporter named Lisa Ling and her trip to China.. and it was really weird cause around that time i was thinking about wut i wanted to do when i grew up and after i saw that episode i thought it would be really cool to be a reporter who gets to travel around and see wut the other countires are like and etc. so i looked it up and i saw that reporters went under journalism...

so my question is.. is or did anybody major in journalism? and if u did or are majoring in it.. is it hard? and wut kind of qualities do u need to have to do good in it? sorry if my questions sound a little.. weird or awkard. i still dont kno much about college yet. >.<

hi! i'm not a journalism major but i had a teacher who taught journalism and also was a reporter himself before an accident.

he told us that if you want to be a journalist you have to like writing, of course that's a given. you also need to watch the news, know what's surrounding close home and far across the world. you can't just watch one channel/broadcast, you have to watch everything. all broadcast has a certain perspective due to sponsor's pressure. in my school journalism is pretty hard from what i heard. i have class with a lot of journalism majors.

if you're passionate about news and you love writing then you'll have a chance in journalism. if you even dislike writing a tiny bit, don't bother because there are a lot of people out there who wants that job.

I'm journalism major, but I actually want to go into public relations. I've taken both of my required news writing classes, and basically you have to be curious, persistent, be willing to learn how to write in a whole new way (writing a jrn article is A LOT different from writing an essay for English) and of course you need to constantly keep up with the news (local, national, and world).

If you're not in college already, make sure you pick one where there is a good journalism school. I go to Michigan State and we have an awesome program in news writing and broadcast.

Hope that helps and good luck! smile.gif

There's a lot of sub fields in journalism.
I was a journalism major before I changed it.
When you get into the upper level courses, it gets pretty difficult.
You're going to have to select a specific field in journalism -
Like advertisement, public relations, magazines, etd.
I think it's a pretty difficult major, but if you like it, go for it.

I'm a Mass Comm. major at my school because my school does not have a traditional journalism major for undergrads (but instead has a Graduate School for Journalism that is accessible for its undergrads). I decided to major in Mass Communications because I wanted to be a journalist. Unfortunately, my major is all about theory, and is not one where they teach how you to be a journalist. Therefore, it's not practical for experience. Instead, we learn about different theories in media, etc.

But yeah, the best way to really find out if journalism is for you is if you get experience through your campus daily, other student publications, or your local newspaper. But in the end, from what I hear about veterans in the field, it doesn't really matter what your major is if you want to be a journalist because there are different types of topics that journalists write about. I've heard that sometimes it's better to be a Poli Sci major if you want to cover government or political issues. But..in the end it's up to you!
