talk about times when curves totally made or broke your grade.
this quarter - introduction to winemaking, i thought i was going to fail with a 63 percent but due to a lot of people missing their tests and failing, the class average dropped and i got curved to a B- instead of what i thought i was going to get (D)
fall quarter last year - our teacher miscalculated the curve and forgot to take into account a stack of exams and had to reassign grades to a lot of people, I was smitten with my B until it got changed to a C+

Curves are always good. I know on several occasions that was the only thing that prevented me from failing.
But sometimes the bell curve can hurt you. I had a class in which everyone in the class got A's and B's. The professor curved the class anyways so there would be a natural distribution. In other words, he curved the class so there will be some C's and D's. What made it worst was that the class as very small, only had like 10 to 12 people in it. So basically that meant only 1 or 2 students got A's, a couple more B's, and the rest C's and D's.

I probably would've failed my Econ class last year if not for the curve.
None of my profs this year bell curves, argh..

curves in my bio classes tend to help my C to a B or so...
altho when i took o-chem C (last quarter)...i totally failed both midterms & the final and i ended up with a B in the class...lucky me...

Luckily, I haven't yet encountered a class that uses the normal-distribution curve AGAINST its students... (meaning, if you had a 90%+ in terms of total points available, but couldn't get the A because half the class had the same grade).
I was taking linear algebra pass/not pass my freshman year (thought college math might be *fun* o_O) but later found out that despite the fact that I had no idea what was going on, I kept scoring above the curve on exams. The final was worth 40% of our grade and I answered 2 questions out of 7... I still passed! Yay for ridiculously hard exams + curved grades!
