Well its basically making fun of society using literary devices. not sure how to explain it... like we used Huckleberry Finn and Scarlet Letter have traces of satire. It comes in different forms....
like in Scarlet Letter the story brings out the hypocrisy of the church - making fun of the church.... errr hopefully dat helps? sorry if it didn't

Quote:
"Satire (lat. medley, dish of colourful fruits) is a technique used in drama and the performing arts, fiction, journalism, and occasionally in poetry and the graphic arts. Although satire is usually witty, and often very funny, the primary purpose of satire is not primarily humour but criticism of an event, an individual or a group in a witty manner."
Although people often comment on how filmy wiki is, you should be okay on this one. Happy reading.

u want news? um... about bush saying 'sh*t' to some kind of high positioned guy... it was all over cnn and all other news... i dunno if its a sattire or not but to me, its sorta is b/c its making fun of how stupid americans r... the president doesn't kno the manner of talking when they're exchanging business.... so stupid.. cant he at least choose a different word?
uh no that's not satire. that's as$hole americans laughing at their president
satire to me is basically any form of media that is meant to be humorous politically or socially
try theonion.com
it's a good example of satire- a lot of liberals find it hilarious. it's basically a bunch of "news articles" that poke fun at everything
satire can be comics, t.v. shows, articles, essays, movies, anything you can think of

Like...my english teacher gave me this article saying that there will be 30 liter cokes that will go flat in 17 minutes once the cap is open. That is satire bcuz a 30 liter coke is an outrageous idea.

example 1: "Candide" by Voltaire is about a man who is so pure of heart, but also ridiculously stupid and makes fun of the french culture of that time in a version of a story.
example 2: "A Modest Proposal" by Jonathan Swift was written as a solution about the famine of the Irish- the solution was eating babies.
He didn't actually want to eat babies at all, it was about how England had been so inhuman so far to their neighbors, letting Ireland starve.
“One may have a blazing heart in one's soul, and yet no one ever comes to sit by it.”

A satire is usually a form of literature that talks about a SERIOUS issue in a COMICAL way.
[edit]
Probably an example would be Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. You should read it. It's a good book.
I hope that helps. =]
