A friend of mine recommended this movie to me and I finally watched it the other night. Let me tell you I was completely blown away and captured by how amazing this movie is! It's highly underrated, one of the best if not the best Sci-fi film I've watched. Everything is tied together wonderfully, especially the cast. Ethan Hawke has never looked so fine, same goes for Jude Law and Uma.

It's mind boggling, that this movie was made in 1997 because I could've sworn, with its quality, I would've guessed it was made recent. This movie was so endulging I didn't want to take a bathroom break, and there I sat in my living room biggrin.gif You can search for reviews by others on the net, and all you'll see are praises. If you haven't seen this movie, please do.

The following briefly explains what the movie is about. Taken from Wikipedia.

Gattaca is a 1997 science fiction drama film written and directed by Andrew Niccol, starring Ethan Hawke, Uma Thurman and Jude Law with supporting roles played by Gore Vidal and Alan Arkin.

The film presents a biopunk vision of a society driven by "new eugenics". Children of the middle and upper classes are "designer babies", genetically engineered in-vitro to be the optimal recombination of their parents' genetic material. A genetic registry database uses biometrics to instantly identify and classify those so created as "Valids" while those conceived by traditional means are known as "faith births", "god children" and, more pejoratively, "In-Valids" (as in "invalid"). “In-valids” who try to enter the “valid” world (by contracting with “valids” to purchase their DNA through collection of blood, urine, hairs, dead skin flakes, etc…) are known as “borrowed ladders” and "de-gene-erates". While genetic discrimination is forbidden by law, in practice it is easy to profile one's genotype resulting in the valids qualifying for professional employment while the invalids who are susceptible to disease are relegated to menial jobs.

The movie draws on concerns over technological developments which facilitate reprogenetics, and the possible consequences of such biotechnology for society.

The movie also explores the theme of destiny, and the ways in which it can/does govern lives. Characters in Gattaca continually battle both with society and with themselves to find their place in the world, and who they are destined to be according to their genes.

when i watched it back in 1997-i didn't really understand it since i was still in elementary n i had no idea what eugenics was..
but i had to watch it again for my college freshman writing class..my prof was into eugenics topics so this film was suppose to help us understand abt it...
it's an alright movie..

i am angry of myself because i can’t move forward unless i hide my feelings
i just realized that when i meet you i can’t just close and throw my heart away

haha i'll admit, if i hadn't had to watch this in law class, i probably would never have touched it even though i am into sci-fi; anyway it was a really good movie, i liked it a lot; the film was made a while back, but these issues will be relevant for a long time..

It was a pretty good movie, I remembered.
Someone reminded me of it the other day and I didn't remember anything.
But now this thread brings back memories.
I think I watched it on this road trip thing with my class way back when. >_>

I totally agree!! smile.gif Gattaca is an awesome movie. One of my all-time favorites, just the story and how powerful the human spirit can trully be. Knowing if you put your mind to something that anything can be achieved. Very well directed with an awesome cast. Thanks for the tread...brought back nice memories.
