And there all pretty much the same as far as music, pictures, schoolwork. The only difference is which shiny badge + price you would like to pay.

I also own a desktop by Gateway. Its pretty nice and stable, nothing wrong happened with it and i've had this for about 4 years now. It's still going strong!
I was very close to buying a Dell laptop, but the price was too high for the laptop (XPS model), and i wasnt sure if i'd like their customer service (which is very important to me), so i just went with the dv2000 which got awesome reviews.
Check out www.notebookforums.com and read alot of reviews before buying, i think it helps alot.

If all you are doing is the typical common stuff like internet, music, downloading, and etc. Then you don't need to build a computer.

to keep it short, macOS an operating system, like linux, unix, and windows, and programs on it must be written a certain way, so you can't use windows programs on a macbook, but you can:
1. use bootcamp or some emulators for mac to run windows/windows programs or
2. download/install programs that are the 'mac version' of the windows programs you want
macOS also has a bunch of other features and things you might like that you can't find in windows unless you install mods or widgets or what-have-you...
