i have MANY questions about college acceptances.

These are only a few[you do not need to answer all of them]:

+ HOW MANY SCHOOLS CAN YOU APPLY FOR EARLY DECISION?

+IF YOU GET ACCEPTED INTO MORE THAN ONE SCHOOL FOR EARLY DECISION, WHAT DO YOU DO?

+IS UVA A GOOD SCHOOL? I HEARD IT WAS IN THE IV LEAGUE AND ONE OF THE TOP IN THE NATION.
-ANY PEOPLE THAT GO THERE?

+WHAT ARE SOME GOOD TOP MEDICAL SCHOOLS?

+ARE TUFTS,COLUMBIA,CALTECH A PRIVATE/PUBLIC SCHOOL?

+HOW DO YOU ORGANIZE/CREATE THINGS LIKE CLUBS OR GROUPS? (LIKE A CLUB FOR VOLUNTEERING OR SOMETHING LIKE
THAT?)

+IS MUSIC/ART/DANCE SOMETHING THAT TOP COLLEGES REALLY LOOK AT AS SIGNIFICANT?

+HOW MANY COLLEGES CAN YOU APPLY TO?

+IF YOU DECIDE TO TAKE THE KOREAN SAT, IS IT HARD?

+WHAT WERE SOME OF YOUR GENERAL GRADES(REPORT CARDS) THROUGHOUT HIGH SCHOOL THAT GOT YOU INTO TOP COLLEGES LIKE PRINCETON,JOHN HOPKINS, ETC?

........edit..........

MORE. HEHE...

+WILL IT HELP YOU IF YOU ATTENDED A MAGNET HIGH SCHOOL? (LIKE I GO TO A MATHEMATICS AND SCIENCE SPECIALTY HIGH SCHOOL WHERE I HAD TO APPLY AND TAKE TESTS TO GET IN)

+WHAT ABOUT SCHOLARSHIPS? DO YOU APPLY FOR THEM OR HAVE THEM OFFERED TO YOU?

+WILL YOU HAVE TO WRITE AN ESSAY FOR THE KOREAN SAT II? OR IS IT LIKE READING COMPREHENSION/GRAMMAR?

+ HOW MANY SCHOOLS CAN YOU APPLY FOR EARLY DECISION?
Depend on the type. If it's early decision, ONE. If early action, then you can apply to as many as long as they're not SINGLE. If single-choice early action, ONE.

+IF YOU GET ACCEPTED INTO MORE THAN ONE SCHOOL FOR EARLY DECISION, WHAT DO YOU DO?
Uh, that's why you don't apply to many early decisions but ONE. because it's binding. If you get accepted to many early actions, you can just choose one. it's not binding

+IS UVA A GOOD SCHOOL? I HEARD IT WAS IN THE IV LEAGUE AND ONE OF THE TOP IN THE NATION.
-ANY PEOPLE THAT GO THERE?
...ivy league? Don't think so. I guess it's ok, it's top 30 in the nation right?

+WHAT ARE SOME GOOD TOP MEDICAL SCHOOLS?
Harvard, JHU, Stanford

+ARE TUFTS,COLUMBIA,CALTECH A PRIVATE/PUBLIC SCHOOL?
Yes...

+HOW DO YOU ORGANIZE/CREATE THINGS LIKE CLUBS OR GROUPS? (LIKE A CLUB FOR VOLUNTEERING OR SOMETHING LIKE
THAT?)
At our school, we just create a club charter & get a teacher to sponsor. very simple

+IS MUSIC/ART/DANCE SOMETHING THAT TOP COLLEGES REALLY LOOK AT AS SIGNIFICANT?
If you are dedicated/have won awards.

+HOW MANY COLLEGES CAN YOU APPLY TO?
As many as you want...

+IF YOU DECIDE TO TAKE THE KOREAN SAT, IS IT HARD?
N/a

+WHAT WERE SOME OF YOUR GENERAL GRADES(REPORT CARDS) THROUGHOUT HIGH SCHOOL THAT GOT YOU INTO TOP COLLEGES LIKE PRINCETON,JOHN HOPKINS, ETC?
Well, Stanford only looks at 10th&11th grades and I've only heard from them so far. I applyed single-choice early action and got deferred. I've only had 1 B and all A's

You can get more complete answers from many other sources, but...

+ HOW MANY SCHOOLS CAN YOU APPLY FOR EARLY DECISION?
One - because early decision is binding (if you're accepted you have to go). Single-choice early action (schools like Harvard, Yale) means you can apply only to that one, but the decision is not binding. Regular early action - you can apply to as many as you want.

+IF YOU GET ACCEPTED INTO MORE THAN ONE SCHOOL FOR EARLY DECISION, WHAT DO YOU DO?
Well, if it's really early DECISION, this can't happen, because you can only apply to one... Early Action - you just choose like normal in April/May.

+IS UVA A GOOD SCHOOL? I HEARD IT WAS IN THE IV LEAGUE AND ONE OF THE TOP IN THE NATION.
-ANY PEOPLE THAT GO THERE?
UVA is NOT in the Ivy League, but it is one of the top public colleges in the US.. usually UVA or UC Berkeley is ranked first for public universities for USNWR, I think.

+WHAT ARE SOME GOOD TOP MEDICAL SCHOOLS?
It depends what specialty you're looking at, but in general, Harvard Med, JHU, UPenn, UCSF... you can see a bigger list from USNWR at http://www.usnews.com/usnews/edu/grad/rank...rrank_brief.php.

+ARE TUFTS,COLUMBIA,CALTECH A PRIVATE/PUBLIC SCHOOL?
There are all private schools.

+HOW DO YOU ORGANIZE/CREATE THINGS LIKE CLUBS OR GROUPS? (LIKE A CLUB FOR VOLUNTEERING OR SOMETHING LIKE
THAT?)
Depends on your school - at our school, we had to fill out a form to apply, get a teacher to sponsor, and get some signatures of people interested in the club.

+IS MUSIC/ART/DANCE SOMETHING THAT TOP COLLEGES REALLY LOOK AT AS SIGNIFICANT?
Depends how good you are and how dedicated you are - if you're a top national pianist, yes, it will be a significant part of your application. If you've been doing it for many years, it'll show commitment and dedication. But if you just participate in some art activity halfheartedly, it won't be as big a part of your application.

+HOW MANY COLLEGES CAN YOU APPLY TO?
As many as you want - I applied to 10.

+IF YOU DECIDE TO TAKE THE KOREAN SAT, IS IT HARD?
I didn't take the Korean SAT II (I took the Chinese one) - but I can tell you the curve is really skewed for all the Asian-language tests because mostly native/fluent speakers take it. So my year an 800 on the Chinese SAT II would only get you a 62 percentile, and a 790 was a 48 percentile.

+WHAT WERE SOME OF YOUR GENERAL GRADES(REPORT CARDS) THROUGHOUT HIGH SCHOOL THAT GOT YOU INTO TOP COLLEGES LIKE PRINCETON,JOHN HOPKINS, ETC?
Um.. I got straight As throughout high school, but there are people who get in w/o straight As and people with straight As who don't get in, so it's not a given. There are so many other factors taken into account, like the difficulty of your classes, for example.

^

they answered almost everything, so let me just add on.

*UVA is a good school, it's within the upper 20s and it is one of the best public universities in the nation along with UMich and UCB.

*And the Korean SAT IIs...depends on your level of Korean. If you're REALLYY fluent, it's a breeze. If you're about as good as your average Korean-American (that knows how to speak Korean), it's not THAT easy, so you'll need to do some studying. Not too much, though.

just to add something,

"good medical schools" will affect you as a graduate student, not so much undergrad, where you'd just do premed.

First question.

A magnet school is a phrase tossed around a lot nowadays. There are alot of them out there. Mine was only just established when I started (I was part of its third graduating class). The problem with having a new magnet school is that there hasn't been enough time for college admission officers to understand each other. There's not a "rep" if you want to call it that. If you go to a place like Exeter (and get a 4.0), the connections that that school has will pull some strings a long way to get you into Harvard. Otherwise, don't rely on your school being a "magnet school" to help you alot.

Second.

You apply for your scholarships. Use a website like Fastweb to do them.

Third.

No clue. Just know that when it comes to the language SAT II, expect a high grade (770+) to stay competitive.

+IF YOU DECIDE TO TAKE THE KOREAN SAT, IS IT HARD?
---- for me it wasn't that hard. I was already fluent but I was sort of weak in the writing/grammar area. & so I studied/took classes. I attendd korean school on and off since...3rd grade but took a specific korean SAT class this fall... so uhh hmm yeah. and I came to American when I was 2 years old (if that's relevant to know).

+WHAT ABOUT SCHOLARSHIPS? DO YOU APPLY FOR THEM OR HAVE THEM OFFERED TO YOU?
---- well from what I've heard, you can get them offered, but for applying.. there are contests like writing essays and etc and you sign up and .. if you win, you get offered scholarships. best place to go to is... fastweb.com. as for being offered... i'm not too sure about that lol. and also if you do well on your PSAT you can get scholarships through that, too.

+WILL YOU HAVE TO WRITE AN ESSAY FOR THE KOREAN SAT II? OR IS IT LIKE READING COMPREHENSION/GRAMMAR?
---- well I took it this november and there was no essay. section1; listening. section2; grammar/usage. section3; reading comp.
but I heard that starting from nov 2007 they MIGHT add an essay.

^ I'm not sure how much receiving pamphlets from Harvard shows a connection btw your school and Harvard... I don't know what exactly "really good college pamphlet things" entails, but plenty of schools get lots of propaganda from schools who want to get more students interested in them. Places like Andover/Exeter (which aren't really magnet schools, since they're private boarding schools) or Stuyvesant/Thomas Jefferson (which are actual magnet public schools) can pull strings because they have a long history of sending kids to certain schools and may have things like alumni connections..

well, a lot of students from my school go to harvard/yale/etc for special programs because they were chosen by these colleges every year

we're the same as thomas jefferson..at least that's what my counselor said

im asking about this because all of my teachers/counselor keeps referring to my school as a magnet school:

"Welcome to the homepage for the the Chesterfield County Mathematics and Science High School at Clover Hill. The school opened in September, 1994, with an enrollment of twenty-five sophomores and seventy-five freshman; approximately 100 freshman have been selected and enrolled each year since then. The magnet school, which shares facilities with Clover Hill High School, is open to any qualifying Chesterfield County student. The school, a member of the National Consortium for Specialized Secondary Schools of Mathematics, Science, and Technology, offers a specialized interdisciplinary curriculum that focuses on accelerated and advanced mathematics and science studies while providing a strong foundation in the humanities." -from my school website

EA= Not binding, usually allows you to apply to more than one school early, unless it is single choice early action. Gives you until May usually to decide.
ED= Binding, if accepted you must go the school.

So...people already answered, but I'll answer anyway.

+ HOW MANY SCHOOLS CAN YOU APPLY FOR EARLY DECISION?
One.

+IF YOU GET ACCEPTED INTO MORE THAN ONE SCHOOL FOR EARLY DECISION, WHAT DO YOU DO?
Impossible. Early Decision means that you are legally required to attend that school if accepted, so you can't apply ED to more than one legally.

+IS UVA A GOOD SCHOOL? I HEARD IT WAS IN THE IV LEAGUE AND ONE OF THE TOP IN THE NATION.
-ANY PEOPLE THAT GO THERE?
It is not Ivy League, but it's called a "public Ivy," meaning it's a top public university with a lot of prestige. I don't go there, but a lot of former classmates do and will. I applied there.

+WHAT ARE SOME GOOD TOP MEDICAL SCHOOLS?
It's a little early to be thinking about that. Med schools are for graduate students.

+ARE TUFTS,COLUMBIA,CALTECH A PRIVATE/PUBLIC SCHOOL?
All private.

+HOW DO YOU ORGANIZE/CREATE THINGS LIKE CLUBS OR GROUPS? (LIKE A CLUB FOR VOLUNTEERING OR SOMETHING LIKE
THAT?)
Depends on the school, but usually you need to start a petition and get enough people to sign it saying they'd be interested. Then you need a faculty sponsor and stuff.

+IS MUSIC/ART/DANCE SOMETHING THAT TOP COLLEGES REALLY LOOK AT AS SIGNIFICANT?
If you're good at it and dedicated, especially if you have a unique talent.

+HOW MANY COLLEGES CAN YOU APPLY TO?
As many as you physically and financially can. Keep in mind they all have application fees and it takes a lot of work to apply to many schools.

+IF YOU DECIDE TO TAKE THE KOREAN SAT, IS IT HARD?
It's brutal for anyone who isn't a native speaker. Slip up once or twice and your percentile is like less than 50. sleep.gif Only take it if your Korean is fluent and solid--or can be with a little brushing up. But seriously, it's not like the Korean SAT II is usually even given much weight by colleges when native speakers take it. So many people take it just to get out of taking other SAT IIs. If you can, take three others in academic subjects you've taken.

+WILL IT HELP YOU IF YOU ATTENDED A MAGNET HIGH SCHOOL? (LIKE I GO TO A MATHEMATICS AND SCIENCE SPECIALTY HIGH SCHOOL WHERE I HAD TO APPLY AND TAKE TESTS TO GET IN)
It can, but not if you're below average for your school. I go to one (Thomas Jefferson), too, but that won't be enough to get me in places. Also, it depends on the rep of your school and how hard it actually is. It can actually hurt you in some cases because if you have all these advanced classes in your area of interest and you don't take them, you may look worse than the kid from a "normal" school who didn't have as many science classes available but took the hardest he/she could have.

+WHAT ABOUT SCHOLARSHIPS? DO YOU APPLY FOR THEM OR HAVE THEM OFFERED TO YOU?
You usually have to apply. Some schools automatically consider all applicants for certain scholarships, though. Don't sit on your butt: some scholarship contests are for freshmen, sophomores, and juniors only.
Hey, look! Finally a different signature after all these years!
