I can only help you with NYU, the school I was accepted into.
NYU emphasizes that there is no real archetypical NYU student, so you never know. However, the SAT they ask for ranges from 2000 to 2200. I got 2140. They ask for three SAT II's, one of which I think is math 2c. (T'was a long time ago). I took US History (770), Literature (760), Biology M (770), and Math (780). They make a big deal out of your EC's, which you didn't list. I listed practically nothing: I liked to write in my spare time (4 hours a week - total fabrication) and I did some sporadic volunteering for the Boys and Girls Club (2 hours a week - again a fabrication). As for teacher recommendations, I had my Junior year english teacher write one. I asked her to emphasize my writing and reading comprehension abilities.
What I think got me in was my major, I made sure to apply for one: Film from the Tisch School. My essay was about an experience over the summer when I went and self-made a short film. Once you decide your major and decide early, you can apply towards that and that is an infinitely better situation than just trying the shotgun approach. To the admissions officers, it shows vision and a definite pathway for yourself. I am sure that if someone started from their freshman year with a dream school and a dream idea of what they want to be, they will get into that dream school without doubt.
