I'm pretty sure a majority of soompiers here will say Avast Home Edition http://www.download.com/Avast-Home-Edition...tml?tag=lst-3-1
and also AVG Free version.
I'd supply a link but support for AVG will be gone sometime soon (within a couple months). If you actually use the free version, you should have gotten some pop up from the program itself that it will be discontinued soon or something.
But what the heck:

actually
GRISOFT is announcing a new version of the AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition. This new 7.5 version with improved performance and full compatibility with the latest Windows Vista version is available. Users that are using AVG Free 7.1 will be provided with a specific dialog, within the next few weeks, with the opportunity to choose the right option fulfilling their needs. AVG Free 7.1 version will be discontinued on 15th of Jan 2007.
so yeah
Also you can try (in my opinion the best AV out there) NOD32 for a trial period.
Excellent program:

30 days (but you have to know where to look to get full *wink wink*)
and also AVG Free version.

Avast, AVG, Kaspersky, and NOD32.
Avast = Not really for me because it doesn't work with ZoneAlarm firewall well.
AVG = Works great for me, I got the full version.
Kaspersky = After restarting the computer suddenly a whole bunch of signs pop up saying this is a virus and blah blah blah. Seemed way to complicated for me and I knew these "viruses" weren't viruses.
NOD32 = I plan on using it only if I ever feel like changing it.
If you know what your downloading and sites you are going to then all you really need is AVG or Avast.
