I just received a letter from Stanford saying that im invited to attend their 8 week summer course this upcoming summer. I get to take classes that actual undergrads take and can receive college credit. But im not sure if it is worth going to because i live in texas and they charge 11,000 dollars for those 8 weeks (btw im a junior in high school).

are there classes you can take around texas rather than go to stanford?
Stanford is expensive, yeah. How far can you go when it comes to doing something outside your local area? Personally, I wouldn't go THAT far if I was in Texas (I live in California). Search locally if any community colleges/universities offer programs of some sorts like the ones Stanford has.

I do know a few certain programs in california, but it depends on how far you want to go.

is it that ECPY (or whatever letters) program? i got something like that from stanford in my sophomore & junior year but im not a big stanford fan so i didnt do it. and i live in MD so its really far O_O; i'd rather do something else like volunteer (which i did), go to school at a local school, hang with friends since it'll be the last summer break with your friends before you go to college (unless you guys are all sticking around for that summer after graduation), or get a job (which i did). even better if you can get a really nice internship! i know my friend got one at NIH and lots of people got some at UMBC, George Washington, etc. in the science labs for research.

but if you like stanford or think their program is worth that much money and your parents let you, then you should try it. you can meet new people and when youre applying to stanford you can put down that you went to summer school to get credits from there (:

i have a question.. um why did they invite you guys?? not saying it in a bad way
but asking where you guys like top 10% or students or straight a students??
or wat was the criteria for getting invited??
and if i were invited i would def. go, but that's only because i luv stanford and hope to get in there....

I got invited to taht too, and wanted to go,, but my parents said no way sad.gif You should def go if your parents will let you and all.. but it's so expensive >_< like the other person said, check around your state for colleges with summer programs.. I know some around where i live do them.

&& to ~shortyfrutie77~ lots of people in my school got them. I don't think the people who got them are top 10%.. cuz i'm not and i know other people who aren't also. I think it's just more like an ad? Maybe check stanfords site? They'll proabbly have info about it there.

Yeah, they send them usually to people with certain test scores and above. I got those types of ads for summer programs from Stanford, Yale, Brown, Harvard, UCLA, etc. but they're so expensive that I couldn't go to any of them. I worked full-time all summer instead. Anyway, when they say "you're invited" you still have to apply, too. They're much more on the side of advertising, not real invitations.
Hey, look! Finally a different signature after all these years!

Oh, I was going to go to that in the summer (now, I'm a sophomore), but chose Washington D.C. I'd rather go to a leadership conference than Stanford. Plus, I had lots of summer homework. :]

i attended the stanford EPGY summer program...it was awesome

EPGY is different from the Stanford Summer Sessions (or something along those lines),

but i did meet people from there as well.

EPGY is more structured - you have one course, and a basic schedule assigned for you (of course, you get choices for activities and free time, etc.).

The Summer Sessions let you be a total college student - you make your own schedule, take whichever classes you signed up for, etc.

Both are indeed very expensive, but i can say that i had no intention of applying to stanford before attending EPGY (i was set on the east coast)...and i just applied to stanford this year.

EPGY is different from other summer programs i've attended, however, in that they don't offer any scholarships..$$

I think they get our names off of the PSAT tests.

Northwestern has summer programs too, and I dont think they're that expensive. My friends went there and LOVED it. So maybe you should check that out too.

please do not PM me asking me to close threads, etc! i am no longer a mod! ^^ thanks!
