okay so i've had my CA driver's license for a few months now, but i've only driven on the freeway once and that was during driver's training >.<. i've never really understood the weirds signs like "1/4 long beach" or "3/4 san diego" and where i should exit and enter to get to my destination. so my question is how do you drive on the freeway without getting lost?

it'll be nice to hear some stories about how you guys handle it the first time on the freeway. was it hard? how could you tell which direction you were headed towards?

my friend tried driving it once and we got lost. we were trying to get back to fountain valley from tustin but we ended up in LA. wacko.gif

i tried asking one of my guy friends, but he just made fun of me tears.gif so i'm asking you guys for help.

on the freeway, the signs show how many miles are left to the destination.

example) 1/4 to long beach = 1/4 mile left to the exit to long beach ^^

if you like traveling on the faster lanes (usually the left side of the freeway), gradually merge onto the right lanes one by one when you see 3/4 or 1/2 left on the signs depending on traffic. this way, you wont miss the exit when it has an arrow and says Long Beach exit### this way.

smile.gif hope this helps!!? ^^

my first time on the freeway was terrifying!! i was only going like, 55mph, and the cars behind me were probably going, "Freak!! move!!" you have to make really really quick decisions, because if you linger, the cars are going more than 70mph around you. it gets easier with practice, but the first 10 times, i recomend you go with an adult so they can guide you without freaking like my friends sometimes did.....
happy to be

Practice, practice, practice! haha tongue.gif Drive around with someone who knows the freeways and areas well, and practice getting off of exits and driving back to your own city from those exits. It helps a lot, and you'll know your way around in no time.

^ I suggested you should drive along with someone.
You could go on yahoo map to search for direction, it would be easy because they tell how many mile and which exit. If not, then other options is to guess by the sign or get lost.

if you`re just starting out, stay in the slow lane (farthest right lane, closest to the exit) lol. people are a lot nicer & forgiving in that lane than in the fast lanes.

the numbers are how many miles until you reach that exit. for example, 1/4long beach means that you have to go 1/4th of a mile to get to long beach. easiest way to not get lost...know what exit you need & make sure you have enough time to get to the right lane in order to exit. keep an eye out for connecting freeways too. xP

i had the most trouble trying to change lanes on the freeway ~ lots of people go really really fast & have extreme road rage, especially in the LA / Garden Grove area. lol at least you didn`t have to go on the freeway for your driving test (it's random)! that was nerve-wracking ><

it really is super easy
there's signs for everything
they tell you what city you're headed for, how many miles, what direction
my friends and i drove to san francisco without any idea how to get there cause it's so easy

usually the signs will tell you the number of the highway you're on and a direction (north, south, east, west)
the first time i drove freeway, i went 95 biggrin.gif my instructor was freaking out

drive with your parents if you're afraid that your friend is going to make fun of you...not having enough practice means you shouldn't be driving alone by yourself on the freeway (even if you DO have a license)...you're a danger not only to others, but also yourself... sleep.gif

When I started out driving, I noticed that it took about 1 minute to get 1 mile (driving 65mph = 65 miles in 1 hour right?). Long Beach exit 3 miles = 3 mins. smile.gif Well that is without traffic of course. So if an exit says 1/2 mile, you only have about 30 seconds to exit. Worked for me and it still works for me.

If you don't plan on getting off the freeway soon, driving on the middle lane is best. Make sure you drive 65mph or a little higher.

How do you not get lost? It will happen. It is a learning experience. Buy and keep a map. Mark your home on the map and study all the freeways near and around you. Make sure you know the directions north, south, west, east.

Good luck! smile.gif

I learn how to drive on the freeway with my dad. After work it's dark so not as many cars so we drove on it. Our freeway tells you like Route 10 and all those weird numbers, and what city you'll be going in. So there could be like two different exits with the same city on it. GRR Like I got an exit 14A Cranston and an exit 16 Cranston...and a 14B Warwick and 10A Warwick...gosh...
