So I'll be leaving to Korea to study abroad at Yonsei this spring for 1/2 a year. Ii'm excited, scared, and don't know what to expect. I will be staying in the international dorms and all my courses will be in English, so I'll survive academically, but getting involved wil be an issue. My korean language would rate as 1/10. I'm wondering if there is anyone that has experienced study abroad at Yonsei and could give me good advice on how life will be. Thanks a lot!

^ Same situation as you. Freshman starting 2nd semester, thinking about studying abroad junior year. But I'm scared and the thought of going abroad intimidates me, since I've been pretty sheltered my entire life. XD And my Korean sucks too. But it sounds like such a fun experience...

there's a thread on yonsei here somewhere, i believe it might be informative to you. smile.gif
i've been wanting to study abroad at yonsei as well, but my current school (cause i'm transferring) doesn't offer any korean courses so i'll be doomed. that sounds really fun, i hope you have a fantastic time there!

I want to study at Yonsei for a semester or a summer or something but I don't want to take Korean language classes because I am Korean and I'm pretty fluent... I'm looking for classes that teach in English and are accepted at UC's for college credit... And I'm hoping it's in the summer. But I really want to do that >___<

Wow~ Yonsei! I heard it's a cool place. Remember to share you experience with us. I wish I could study at Korea too but having like 1/18th of a kindergarten kid's language skills, I have second thoughts.

Hey, I was at Yonsei last summer. I did their KLI program for about 1-2 months and had a blast. I'm sure you'll have an awesome time studying abroad over there.

Stuff that bothered me:
1. The stinkin weather - It is way too hot and humid in the summer! I couldn't stand 2 minutes without breaking a sweat. My dorm room was blasting the AC constantly.
2. The stinkin weather - During one part of the summer, it rained constantly. I couldn't keep my shoes dry. I suggest some sandals or some footwear that dries instantly.
3. The stinkin dorms - If you decide to dorm you will probably stay at the Muak dorms which are seriously high up in the Himalayas. It is a HIKE to get to your room. When it rained, there was a huge waterfall from the dorm down to the world below. Seriously. Its that high up.
4. The stinkin dorms - There is curfew at around 1am. I felt like I was back in high school. The doors are locked from 1-5am. Be prepared to look for windows you can sneak in through or stay out till 5am.

Stuff that was AWESOME:
1. Yonsei is near 신촌 and 홍대 which = awesome nightlife. Tons of beautiful women... so plenty of chances to work your A game!
2. Alcohol - its cheap!
3. Food - its cheap!
4. Public transportation is great. Taxis will get places quicker but are a little more expensive. The subway pretty much gets you anywhere. It takes about half an hour to get to Gangnam from Yonsei on the subway so it is not too bad.

Let me know if you want more info! I'll try to be as helpful as I can be. Have fun over there! biggrin.gif

Oh yeah...

It was pointed out in the other thread about studying @ Yonsei that most of the Korean-Americans stuck together and only hung out with each other. I noticed this too. I would suggest going out and meeting some native Koreans. They are freaking hilarious and real fun. And I think you'll have a different experience. Who knows, they might have some hook ups and you might end up having a couple beers with Hyun Joong from SS501? (Yeah I know, it would have been way cooler to be drinking with Hyori or something... unsure.gif )

international dorms at yonsei has strict policy on girls and guys not staying in same room.

this is bc in 2002, there were a lot of kyopos who went back to america pregnant, and parents were very angry.

Yeah, I was able to meet him and hear some Karaoke too haha. And don't worry. There are TONS of hot women in Sinchon. Yonsei is also right next to Ehwa(sp?), an all girls university. biggrin.gif

The schedule would depend on what classes you are taking right? Are you doing their language program or taking classes for you major? I did the language program and if I remember correctly, classes were from 8am-1pm.

I'm assuming by UC you mean Cali schools? This is all I know. I go to Oregon State and I completed my language requirements for what I did in Yonsei. I don't know about other classes but I'm assuming the credits will be transferable. This may be something to ask an adviser? I don't know but maybe someone else on here does.

QUESTION!!

Is the DIEE (year) program hard to get into?
Are they picky?
Do they take students from community colleges?
Thanks
