hey guys wuddup? haven't posted any new topics about asian-american artists in awhile, uhhh neways just thought I'd make a topic about this duo that I'm really into.

They are called "Magnetic North" and they are made up of 2 Vietnamese-American emcees from the Westcoast (1 guy, 1 girl, I thought that their music style was pretty refreshing and suprisingly good.

Much better than our so called "gangsta, money, and hoes" crap dats currently circulating on the airwaves, It sickens me to see what hip-hop has become, Its good to see that there are still people out there who are making hip-hop worth listening to.

Even for those who don't even LIKE hip-hop, give them a chance and check them out, you might be pretty suprised

QUOTE
Comprised of close friends that share an unhealthy lust for music, Magnetic North is a hip hop duo that strives to find the balance between insightful lyrics and engaging instrumentals. Though they formed in 2003, both Direct and Theresa Vu have been emceeing for over 7 years. Direct, the mastermind behind their instrumentals, favors melodies heavy in acoustic guitar, piano riffs, and a variety of strings. He tops off his production with honest rhymes and a refreshingly crisp delivery. Then there is T, who brings to Magnetic North that final touch - a female emcee as comfortable on the mic as any of her male contemporaries.

"Drift Away" Music Video (best song by them in my opinion, the first song in the beginning is called "Unda Control" then after awhile "Drift Away" begins)

Yep, totaly agree.
i don't like hip-hop that much (and i hate all these craps of gangsta/big cars/big boobs girls/big guns/rap) and i like Magnetic North. As you said maybe because it's a boy and girl duet, so it give more relief to their music. And good thing, they don't play the "bad boy/slut in bikini" band, their voices are really well balanced, they call each other.
And because of the music background, so often wasted in hip-hop with big "boom-boom" drums and "scratch-scratch" mixs, it's rich and harmonious, with instruments not often used in hip-hop, while Magnetic North puts piano on when others use samples.

PS : you can listen to some others song on their website (link in Dah_jOkA's post)
Hop ! hop ! here is Bae Doo-Na's thread ! (and watch Linda Linda Linda !!!)

whoa, about time there's a thread for them.

they're incredibly good imo. they have some pretty good songs, like drift away, we will not be moved and so long.
that are a lot different than what we usually hear today. i heard them through wong fu productions, haha.
people should definately give them a chance.

here's their soundclick btw smile.gif

I hate that everytime people compare american hip hop to asian hip hop, it's always the american hip hop labeled in a bad way
I admit that there is alot of explicit lyrics, but hip hop has always had that since the early 90's, if u really knew hip hop u would know that, stop acting like that's something new dry.gif

whos said i was comparing ASIAN HIP HOP TO AMERICAN HIP HOP? I'm just comparing hip hop IN GENERAL, if YOU knew hip hop then you would know that today's hip-hop and the 90s hip-hop are totally different, even Nas said it, "HIP-HOP IS DEAD"

The 90's were the golden era of hip-hop, yea they dropped a couple lines bout gangstas, cars, n hoes n all but they also dropped sum ill tracks that acutally MEANT something and made people think.

Now its all booty shaking and sum crappy ass beats wid nonsense lyrics. can you honestly say that you can compare today's rappers i.e T.I, 50 Cent, Yung Joc and G-Unit to those of 2pac, Biggie, Big Pun, and Bone-Thugs-N-Harmony? C'MON!

anyways yea I don't mean to bash on public forums, I made this thread SOLELY for Magnetic North. If would like to continoue with our "discussion" then feel free to PM me

Uhh.. he wasnt talkin about american hip hop. He was talkin about about hip hop in general. And it has changed since back then. In the early 90s the lyrics actually meant something. Now its.. just... ughh indescribable.

Anywayz.. I gotta listen to them. haha. After i listen to my new JIN album

EDIT: wow these 2 are great. definately have talent. Kinda cool that WONG FU made the music video too

ohhh yes I love Magnetic North. I first learned about them through the wongfu crew, and I just fell in love with Drift Away! So I went and checked out more of their songs and to my surprise, they're all pretty good. I love their lyrics, very inspring happy.gif I'm hoping to order a copy of their album soon, I just need to get my paypal account set up first.

hey, they're from the bay.
their flow is very good when it comes to using ABAB, ABBA, etc., which most mainstream rappers today don't use (instead they use AAAA).
plus they can get asian-american issues out and across

When I read the first post, my mind went straight to thinking HIP HOP in general. Wtheck does it has to do with American hip hop or Asian Hip hop, seriously. Hip hop is hip hop. Is it separated by race now? Just because it's asian rapping, it doesn't make any difference, if they were rapping about hoes, money, thugs, we will state it and the whole nine yards about it.

But anyways, thank you for always posting threads for Asian American Artists, I can say without you I wouldn't know these people.

Edit: Can someone please PM me with that Drift Away song or better yet their album? Much appreciation.
