im gonna take a random guess and say that they put it there because its easier to see, and is in your peripheral (sp) vision, also, having the speedometer located in the gauge area sometimes it gets blocked by the steering wheel.

It's not just the Yaris' that have that....the scion xA's have it too

Anyway I don't like how they have it in the middle. It isn't even about getting used to it. The companies try to make something different, but this shouldn't be one of them.

mini's have it too because of the minimalist styling, pertaining to the interior space that is.
