so i was able to take the s2k out again for some track fun. the temp at the track was pretty low. when we got there we were told it was 17* (the road temp didnt go above that all day), and then it warmed up to a toasty peak of 35*. this time it was a gymkhana/drift event. there weren't many people there so we pretty much just messed around all day. it was great i got A LOT of seat time in the s2k. Drifting the s2k is pretty hard, there is a fine balance to it. a little too soft or too aggressive and you loose the drift. its one of the hardest cars to drift i've driven. sure catching the tail coming out in a corner, holding the slide, then recovering in the s2k isnt too complicated (the chassis communcates really well). but full on drifting is another thing all together. one thing that bugged me was the hand brake cable wasnt tight enough. so when i pulled it to do a 180, a 180 didnt happen laugh.gif. by the end of the day i had gotten the hang of it ok. i got some really good drifts in, including some 3rd gear entry ones. my friend with the supercharged miata was there and we swapped cars for a bit. the miata is so much easier to drift and with the extra power of the supercharger its easier than my miata. my friend with the rotary ae86 was there also. now on to the pics

me in the miata:

Looks like fun.
how does the S2K's handling characteristics compare to your miata?

how fun.. thanks for posting pics.
i haven't been to the track/autox events with my s yet.

i don't drift like you do, nor do i have much experience with it, but i noticed that the s doesn't want to maintain a drift/slide very long either. i used to drive a miata and a 240sx and they (edit: don't) seem to handle the same way as my s2k. with the s the rear kind of slides out, but jerks back in even though i'm not letting up on the throttle. it surprised me the first time it happened, but i'm not entirely sure why it reacts that way. it really does want to just grip the whole time.

i heard (just from a friend, though) that if you change the lsd it'll handle more predictably.

anyway, great pics

very similar. the miata recats quicker (less weight, modified suspension, etc) but the s2k has higher limits. the miata is easier to slide though, the s2k is on more of a knife edge

you should asap its a blast. i've been to willow springs with the s2k and its a lot of fun.

its partially the torsen diff. torsen diffs while being great for grip and daily driving are not ideal for drifting

you just got to practice with the s more. early in the day it was pretty snappy, but once i got the hang of sliding the s it was smooth. when i wouldnt get it almost exactly right it would be snappy. like i said before there is a small "sweet spot" for drifting the s2k, so you just got to get every thing right (steering, throttle, weight transfer) oh and really really try and keep the revs above at least 5k. if necessary drop it a gear during the drift.

if he's talking about drifting yeah thats true. it goes back to the torsen diff thing i was talking about before. a clutch type diff would make it easier

kudos. you never cease to impress me with your driving skills and determination.

you know... i went to a place called riverside raceway, which was 15 minutes away from my house... thinking it was a tiny road course here in the boonies. good news was, it was a racetrack... bad news was, they replaced it with car dealerships. sad.gif

Lancaster/Rosamond is mighty cold in the mornings especially for trackdays and even worse when it's windy. Almost tempted to grab onto someone's rotors after coming into the pits.

Looks like its Horsethief because the skidpad at SOW doesn't look like that.

i hate it when its windy. one time when i went it was sooooooooo windy. the gusts must have exceeded 60mph

it was the balcony. we didnt just use the skid pad, we used the whole area.

this is my 2sec photoshop job showing one of the things we did laugh.gif

very top of 2nd gear, flick it, slide for a long time, if necessary left foot brake or ebrake to cut in close to the cone and drop it into first gear to get as close as possible to the cones:

OR you can slide one way then slide the other way, then the rest is the same. idk which one i did in that pic

if you use the straight on the far left of the "track" you can get into 3rd gear, then slide through the skid pad area to the straight on the right side. its feels good when you get it right biggrin.gif
