Anyone know how competitive it is to get into USC/UCLA college? Especially for out of state?

Well for USC, I don't think your chances change with being out-of-state, since tuition is same across the board whether you're from California or not.

I think it's become pretty competitive to get to both schools now.

I got in '02 with a 1360 SAT Score and a 4.2 GPA. Zero Extracurricular Activities. So I dunno if that gives you anyhope.

UCLA, I have no idea.
Let me tell you something you already know. The world ain't all sunshine and rainbows. It is a very mean and nasty place and it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life.

i got into USC last year (currently a freshman) with a 2050 SAT I, and 3.83 unweighted cumulative GPA. i only state my uw GPA because where i am from (washington state), the legislature banned the weighting of AP/IB courses. at least i graduated with an IB diploma, though. my SAT IIs were 730 Bio-E and 710 Math II. i had a ton of extracurriculars. drumset, choir, tutoring, hospital volunteering, etc.

anyway, my guess would be that the requirements for gaining admission to USC and UCLA are probably similar now. USC really stepped up their admissions last year, and i figure that it'll only keep getting tougher in the foreseeable future.

ps: it is considerably more difficult for an OOS to gain admission to UCLA than a california resident. your best chance would be to have spectacular standardized test scores.

The thing that confuses me is this guy I know. He got rejected from almost every UC except UC Santa Cruz and he got into USC... So I'm confused.

Out-of-stater here who applied to both schools last year (2200, 92/100 UW GPA, decent extracurriculars) and was accepted to SC, rejected from LA. I think my (sucky) essays had to do with it...lol.

It's getting a lot more competitive to be accepted to USC these days; UCLA, if you're an out-of-stater, will always be tough. Good luck! Oh, I attend USC right now. smile.gif

1680/2400 SAT. 4.3 gpa weighted. passed 6 AP tests, 700 on SAT 2 Bio, English and US history, kick ass personal statements and a lot of extracurricular activities. not that hard.

i got into usc and i didnt have steller sat's like the rest of my peers. although i did reach the average at the time but that doesnt matter since you guys use the new sat's. they really like to see you being really involved. luckily, i was involved in a lot of things in high school which i think boosted up my chances to get into usc.

if youre not a california resident...you pretty much have to be valedictorian to be guaranteed to get into a uc school. because they are cutting funds at the uc schools now...itll be tough as an out-of-state person to get into that school.

this might be hard to say here since i know a lot of people go to ucla...but i like usc better. we might not be in a nicer neighborhood...but i like the people here =). im a sophomore and now in my spring semester if you wanna know.

when i got into SC back in 99, it wasnt too hard. 1410 SAT and 3.5 GPA plus lots of extra curricular + volunteering work. nowadays i hear it's pretty crazy. even around when i graduated i 04, the freshman i would talk to would tell me how they chose SC over UCLA. that whole college of the millenium marketing strategy really helped SC move up the ranks. it also helped that SC placed first in raising funds among all colleges in the US spanning from the 90's into the early 00's.

at the time of my application, i got rejected to every UC i applied to (even santa barbara and irvine!!), but i got into SC, pomona college and NYU. i guess UC's just didnt like me. smile.gif but im glad i didnt get into any of the UC's. my experience at SC is something i could never trade for anything.

Were you an out of stater? Because he's a CA resident and he STILL got rejected everywhere except USC and UCSC... +_+

Yes being an out of state really sucks. The thing with me is that my GPA isn't great, but my standardized test scores are pretty good, they are above 2200.

What do you think this gives my chances? I was pretty much a slacker in school, but worked hard on the SAT.

Also I do some extra-curriculurs such as volunteering and varsity sports.

i was born and raised in los angeles. i went to a private high school in LA. 10% of my graduating class went to UCLA, and 30% ended up going to some sort of UC school.

UCLA is one of the most highly selective schools, if not the most selective, in the whole entire U.S.

and yes i would think that it's slightly harder for out of state students to get in since, but if you have what they're looking for.... then sure, you'll get in. i'm not sure what it takes though. it seems random. i have a friend who wasn't really involved in high school but he had 4.0, volunteer work, APs that stuff and he got in for electrical engineering which is one of the most competitive. then i have another friend who was CSF club president, APs, super involved, all arounder and she didn't get in.

If I'm correct, UCLA is the college that receives the most applications from across the nation, so there's no doubt the competition is there. Not to mention the fact that it's one of the top 2 UCs (Berkeley). It'll be difficult for everyone, not just out-of-state-ers.
