There is really only one thing I can suggest for you to do. Go to the link above and download ffdshow. Once you install it, run the Video Decoder Configuration program.

Once in the configuration program, right click on the xvid codec and select "Set all stable formats to libavcodec". Don't forget to hit apply then exit. Finally, you should download VLC player and use that to playback the videos since it's more efficient than other players like BSplayer, however you might be able to stick with your current player if your computer is fast enough.
The reason why you should do all this is because using libavcodec from ffdshow is alot more efficient in decoding divx, xvid and H263 & H264 video files. Used in combination with VLC player, your computer might be fast enough to playback those video files without the video/audio desyncing.
[EDIT] If you've got processing power to spare, you can significantly increase video playback quality by setting VLC player's postprocessing to level 6 as shown below. Go to settings, then preferences to access this menu. Don't forget to save your settings. Doing this will apply very sophisticated noise-reduction, smoothing and demacro-blocking effects on all your divx/xvid files without sacrificing details. It is important that ffdshow be installed first. ffdshow with post processing level 6... takes less CPU power than normal Divx/Xvid without any quality enhancement at all. Obviously if your video files start skipping a bit, then you may need to lower or turn off this feature completely. But if you can spare the power, then enjoy the higher quality video playback!

i downloaded Divx - http://www.free-codecs.com/download/DivX_Free.htm
and XviD - http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Nic_XviD_Codec.htm
but my movie i d/l still won't work...
I'd download the megapack. Chances are, it'll install whatever codec you're currently missing so you can playback your movie.
heyloo, okay so i got a new mac and i can't play avi files on my computer because i need codecs or something? does anyoneo know where i can get these codecs for mac? because i've been looking around for a long time and i can't find any. if you can help me out that'll be awesome. lol PM me please. THANK YOUU.
follow that link for instructions on how to get divx/xvid working on a mac. For a player, go here http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ to get VLC player for macs.
Hi! I understand that I need something like a BS player to view vids with subtitles. When I tried installing the program, there's a "low risk" security warning that appears on the screen because of the Adserver accompanying it. I'm just weary that if ever I do use BS, and configure my norton security to allow the ad pop-ups, I might have problems in the future with viruses that I would get from the net or that all the web sites I go to would be noted by them. Sorry for the question, it's just that I'm not so good with computers. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

You can also try GOM player here
GOM handles those problematic videos well, too. Can fast-foward/rewind/etc where other players can't.
ALSO. If you get Real Alternative, GOM will play Realmedia files as well <3
mineowyn: try GOM + Real Alternative as well

The "custom" or "expert" installation will produce a complete list of all the codecs available in the pack. The ones with a checkmark are the ones installed by default. If your video doesn't play then there's a chance it might be because you're missing a codec which isn't installed by default. Knowing which one is the tricky part. Installing absolutely everything may or may not cause conflicts.
The other cause might simply be because Windows Media Player cannot properly handle the video file you're playing. In that case, you can use another player like VLC Player, Media Player Classic (which comes with the K-Lite Codec Pack listed above)... or other recommended alternatives to Windows Media Player.

^ since you didn't specify what file extension or format the video file is in... I can only guess. And I'm guessing you're trying to playback a Real Media file... filename.RM or filename.RMVB correct? If so, you need to go here http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Real_Alternative.htm and install Real Alternative. That'll take care of RM and RMVB files.
so could i also use real alternative if its an srt file?
