I rarely use my desktop, but still use it nonetheless. I was hoping i could just sell my monitor, and instead use my laptop as a monitor. I haven't been able to find any answers in google.... hopefully, someone here can give me a definitive answer

Umm... From what I know... no unless you get some kind of switch to switch from your laptop display to your desktop's.

What monitor do you have? Why not just keep it.

Actually, I don't think it will even work. You have a graphic card on your laptop, your desktop has one as well. You can't just connect the two and show one. As far as I know, it cannot be done. If it was the other way around, THEN a switch could be used.

=] one way is to get VNC
setup a VNC server on your desktop and use vnc on your laptop. Basically VNC is remote control. The problem with that idea is you will want a backup... like maybe TV out or something so you can use it on your TV. It will rely on software... and if software goes bad and you cant see that sucks.

your laptop wont physically act like a monitor for you unless you get some card (I dunno if it even exists) to do the capture and show on your laptop... and run it through software.

That's the other way around.

The OP wants to use his laptop monitor as his desktop monitor smile.gif.

My cousin uses this blue cable thing..to connect her's to her desktop. I'm not sure how it works, but it looks somewhat similar to the ones you use to hook up your laptop to a projector.

My friend hooks up his montior to his flat screen tv..[whichi is really cool] but iono how he does it.

Just use remote desktop or VNC. You can't use your laptop monitor as your desktop's monitor through hardware. Since you're only using it like 1x a month, thats your best solution.

I agree with the VNC option. I use it all the time to access my windows desktop pc via my laptop. I use my desktop everyday but I don't have a keyboard, mouse, or screen for it - everything is done through the macbook. It's been like that for about half a year.

those of you using RealVNC, make sure you're using the latest version v4.1.2. The earlier versions had an exploit which allowed someone to log into one of the computers I manage at the corporation I work for without needing a password. It was pretty funny too... one of the District Managers came running to me and said "help, someone's hacking into my laptop RIGHT NOW!" He was freaking out so hard. laugh.gif
