Usually, "class participation" means attendance and turning in homeworks. If that's the case, I do pretty well. Better now than before since I miss less class now than I did my first few semesters. But then, if they factor in things like answering questions/speaking up in class, I'm shy and let others speak for me. I'm getting much better at speaking in class though... But participation hasn't really played a factor in determining my grade. Lack of participation has lead me to do poorly on some exams, but the "participation grade" itself doesn't mean much for the classes I've taken.

I don't usually talk very much, although I do have 100% attendance. It's easier when it's a full year course. I just go and become a familiar face, and make profs or TAs remember me... and it seems to have turned out well...

of course, mine are never very big percentages of the grade, so it doesn't make a huge difference...

Class participation is part of the grade for many of my classes-taking up around 10-15% of my grade. It includes participating in class discussions, group discussions, and attendance- and in very rare cases-whether you have ever showed up to office hours. I show up to all my classes but am not very good at participating in discussions. I can actively get into a group discussion but class discussions scare me. But it's gotten a lot better. As much as it pains me every time i see class participation count on the syllabus, it has really helped me get a bit used to speaking off the top of my head in front of people- and sometimes, even coherently [and then i become proud of myself for the rest of the day!] As for grades, while class participation doesn't hurt my grade, i can definitely see how if i were a more active participant, it would have given me more of an edge.
