I'd say other, meaning the OEM lense. But i've used both lenses before on various cameras, and all I can tell you is that I'm not the critical of the lens quality to able to tell the itty-bitty differences between them. Seriously try out both. Its not all about image quality, its also weight, because the weight and weight distribution can affect the handling of your camera, making easier or more difficult to hold for extended periods of time.

If its a manual camera lens (for older cameras), then also make sure the aperture ring is easy to reach and control.

it really depends on your general need, but from what i get from the photog community online is that the tammy 17~50/2.8 and the 28~75/2.8 are the only ones worth mentioning (aside from the 18~200 starter lens, which i wouldnt really recommend).

sigma also has it's own rival to the tammy lenses mentioned in the 18~50/2.8 and the 24~70/2.8. personally, i think quality is roughly evens out to be the same. (IMO) sigma wins in build quality, but tamron wins out in optics (just by a little bit).

sigma also has one of the best prime lenses in the market in the 30/1.4. it's just a shame it's only for aps-c sized sensors. (no good on a full frame camera!) on top of that, they have their own version of the 70~200/2.8 telephoto lens that can really perform. it comes with the tripod collar, cap, etc. (unlike canon!!) an L lens is still better in many regards, but this sigma can certainly keep up, AND it costs hundreds less, giving people much incentive.

there's also a third player, tokina, that makes some decent lenses. they're coming out with new ones soon, like the 16~50/2.8. im curious to see how it compares to the other third party lenses, or even to canon's 17~55/2.8 IS.

i guess i could go on and on about the diff lenses, but i think you sort of get the idea. i think overall, sigma offers the most diverse choices out of the group. however, there are a group of select tamrons that can outperform the sigma in terms of optics (and give clearer/sharper pictures overall).

based on your need (and your preferences), your choice will differ among brands.
