excl.gif Intro
For those who are gamers, such as myself, you would want the best response and performance outta your mouse, especially in FPS games (cs, day of defeat, etc). Slow reaction time could mean you getting shot in the ass or it could mean the other way around! So, here, I present a guide on how to improve the response time of your mouse!

excl.gif Background
By default, Windows has your USB ports locked in at 125Hz; any mouse you plug into your USB port will respond at a theoretical max response of 8ms. But, in fact, the USB port is capable of much more...allowing up to 1000Hz or 1ms (with the right mouse)! (note: cordless mice, like my mx700 have a wireless ceiling of 150Hz, so increasing the max on the usb port wont do anything noticable.)

excl.gif Requirements:
  • Windows XP
  • A high-end corded USB mouse (ie. logitech mx or G series, razer mice, etc) - these mice will receive the MOST benefit out of this tweak
  • you should be a FPS gamer to notice the effect
excl.gif How to OC (for USB):
  1. Check your current mouse rate with dxmousetimer or mouseratechecker

You should be peaking at around 125Hz with a decent mouse.
  2. Save usbmouserate switcher to desktop
  3. Reboot windows and hold F8 then boot in SAFE MODE (this must be done due to WFP)
  4. Run that program you saved on your desktop then set your mouse to either 500Hz or 1000Hz.
  5. Reboot into normal windows and remeasure your mouse rate! It should be higher and not limited by winxp's default rate!
  6. Game. cool.gif
excl.gif How to tweak PS/2 mouse (rate not as high as USB):
Under Win95/98, the rate is locked at 40Hz; under NT4, locked at 60Hz. You can change it with a list of programs here if you have those OS's.

Under WinXP:
  1. Open Control Panel
  2. Goto Mouse Properties > Hardware > highlight PS/2 Mouse under devices then click properties > advanced settings
  3. Set sample rate to MAX (for me, it was 200Hz as in the picture) and increase the input buffer to 300-400 to avoid overflows
  4. OK it then reboot.
excl.gif Results!
This is a recent benchmark done by ESreality (1month old only!) comparing a bunch of mice on a combination of different factors like resolution, control, etc. And...

At defaulted levels, the razer mice seem to do really well! But as soon as you apply this 1000Hz tweak the MX510 takes top spot, even beating out its more exp. brothers, the G5! Pretty cool! So if you got a USB mouse, try this out! Its free and riskfree (just restore usbport.sys with that program)!

Hmm interesting... I only wish that I could adjust the mouse speed/precision on my mouse while I use it... maybe use that useless window switch button (I don't use the mouse utility) to change...

(mx700 too!)

Oh that's sick...

Thanks... I use a MX518 and it just increased from a peak of 129 hz to 600!
We all wear masks. Everyone, everyday... sometimes we wear them so much, we forget who we really are. And sometimes if we're lucky, someone comes along and shows us who we really want to be, who we should be.

Tumblrrr.

the Fast RF wireless system that the MX700 uses maxes out at 150Hz i believe...so this tweak wont do much for ya. i got the same mouse blink.gif. i think the g7 mouse can change on the fly though; pretty cool feature.

I've been using the PS/2 port, 200hz, ever since I had the mouse, but then I saw this and gave USB a try. I've always been using low sensitivity (ranging from 2 - 3) in Counter-Strike, so I don't feel much of a difference anyways. I don't play Counter-Strike much nowadays since all my friends stopped playing it.

Dude, we should start some kind of Soompi CS Clan! Tag: <name>`soompi <3

hey i have a wireless optical mouse that uses a usb receiver.
And it is locked at 125mhz 8ms

I'm sure it'll help with wireless ones too right?
I have a logitech wirelesskeyboard/mouse setup.

ALso, what exactly are the benefits of having a higher clock?
I understand that there will be a quicker response time

i think you got it: there will be a quicker response time. technically, it WILL help your logitech mouse...by unlocking the rate so that it reaches around 150Hz between the usb receiver and your computer(max on logitech RF) but that difference is so small, you wont notice a thing!

This review i quoted talks about the whole issue of mice in detail: http://www.esreality.com/?a=longpost&i...5679&page=1

hm.. well i realized that that my response times would often be greater than 8ms, sometimes 13-17ms.
but i did it anyways, haha no improvement. But i dont care, i guess when i plug in my wired mouse later
