For those who are gamers, such as myself, you would want the best response and performance outta your mouse, especially in FPS games (cs, day of defeat, etc). Slow reaction time could mean you getting shot in the ass or it could mean the other way around! So, here, I present a guide on how to improve the response time of your mouse!
By default, Windows has your USB ports locked in at 125Hz; any mouse you plug into your USB port will respond at a theoretical max response of 8ms. But, in fact, the USB port is capable of much more...allowing up to 1000Hz or 1ms (with the right mouse)! (note: cordless mice, like my mx700 have a wireless ceiling of 150Hz, so increasing the max on the usb port wont do anything noticable.)
- Windows XP
- A high-end corded USB mouse (ie. logitech mx or G series, razer mice, etc) - these mice will receive the MOST benefit out of this tweak
- you should be a FPS gamer to notice the effect
- Check your current mouse rate with dxmousetimer or mouseratechecker

You should be peaking at around 125Hz with a decent mouse. - Save usbmouserate switcher to desktop
- Reboot windows and hold F8 then boot in SAFE MODE (this must be done due to WFP)
- Run that program you saved on your desktop then set your mouse to either 500Hz or 1000Hz.

- Reboot into normal windows and remeasure your mouse rate! It should be higher and not limited by winxp's default rate!
- Game.

Under Win95/98, the rate is locked at 40Hz; under NT4, locked at 60Hz. You can change it with a list of programs here if you have those OS's.
Under WinXP:
- Open Control Panel
- Goto Mouse Properties > Hardware > highlight PS/2 Mouse under devices then click properties > advanced settings

- Set sample rate to MAX (for me, it was 200Hz as in the picture) and increase the input buffer to 300-400 to avoid overflows
- OK it then reboot.
This is a recent benchmark done by ESreality (1month old only!) comparing a bunch of mice on a combination of different factors like resolution, control, etc. And...

At defaulted levels, the razer mice seem to do really well! But as soon as you apply this 1000Hz tweak the MX510 takes top spot, even beating out its more exp. brothers, the G5! Pretty cool! So if you got a USB mouse, try this out! Its free and riskfree (just restore usbport.sys with that program)!
