if you're not going to major in music but your college has an orchestra, should you even try joining it?
does it depend on how good and prestigious the orchestra is?
do you have to carry your instrument around?
is rehearsal a class or an extracurricular thing?

important*
do you have to audition BEFORE you get in? or is that only for kids who are accepted based on their audition?
is it okay to get in the college and then join?

should i even try?
i really like violin and i'm not bad, i'm afraid i'll forget or get bad but i don't want to have to carry it around...

i'm not talking about the local community colleges but the more selective outer state colleges ^^

i know people who prepare for college auditions... that's ONLY if they want to major in it right?

thank you smile.gif

I'm curious about this, too. I don't plan on becoming a pro or majoring (even minoring) in music at all, but I would really, really like to continue playing in an orchestra. I know a couple of schools I applied to don't have orchestras; you have to audition for a local one instead. I think this might depend on the school somewhat, but I know most only require scheduled auditions during the application period for those planning to major or minor, and many don't accept demo tapes unless you're majoring/minoring in music. I'm not sure about anything else, though, such as whether it'll be too late if I wait until the start of the academic year.
Hey, look! Finally a different signature after all these years!

It's gonna be a few years before I'm a college student, but my orchestra director in high school said that if you can pretty much get a full ride scholarship in some schools if you're in the school's orchestra. One of my orchestra coaches, who is an alumni of my high school, has a full ride scholarship for the rest of her remaining years in college.

Pretty much if you're in your high school orchestra for all four years or something and you know your director well then they can recommend you and pull some strings. My director says he's been able to pull some strings for some of his band and orchestra kids by getting them to play in the college's orchestra or band program for a year.

I talked to my orchestra director about this. Apparently the bigger schools don't really have that many opportunities for non-music majors because they have a ton of music majors to fill orchestral spots. She actually told me to switch over to viola if I really wanted to play in the orchestra. For those of you who don't know, it's a joke in the string section that violinists that don't get anywhere switch over to viola because orchestras always need violas. And this girl from my school who plays viola said schools were willing to pay her to join the orchestra because they needed violas.

She also said that even if you can join an orchestra, non-music majors are limited to which orchestras they can audition for. ie. the higher level orchestras are limited to music majors. Like my friend at Northwestern said that there's a band non-music majors can participate in, but it's still extremely competitive.

But then she said if you go to a LAC, there's a smaller student body and it's "easier" to get a spot in the orchestra because they have less people to choose from.

haha. Yes, it's hobbang.

My orchestra director is still like, "it's not too late to start viola sarah!" I swear, she has a thing for viola or something. But my hands are too small, I can't even hit octaves on the piano.

Not only viola, bass and cello that seem to be wanted everywhere. x]
