In terms of experience, would you guys recommend going to the UK or Italy? I'm going to do three programs back to back to back where it will either be the UK or Italy next fall followed by Japan in the Spring then Hong Kong the entire following year. Setting aside cost, major requirement, language, and all the other technical stuff because I already burned them into my brain, (looking at things more along the lines of atmosphere, culture, food, etc.) has anyone who has been to either or even both of these countries have anything to say about them?

i'm looking at studying at West London College..
actually it's not a full-time course..just a 6-week intensive training on airline ticketing..
but i'm still saving up for airfare and accommodation..
apartments are quite expensive along the west end area and i'm really not a dorm type of person..

OK so I've narrowed it down to the UNIVERSITY OF MALTA and the UNIVERSITY OF CANBERRA, but I am having a hard time choosing between the two. HELP!?!?! Has anyone gone to either of these schools and can tell me more information? Which one seems more worth it?

For the Univ. of Malta, it's an island in the Mediterranean Sea...just 60 miles south of Sicily and from the pictures I've seen, it's a BEAUTIFUL country. It's great because the school there is the main one and international students exceeds the main students who go there. They have a different currency than the Euro but that's ok.

As for Univ. of Canberra, it's located in Australia! There IT program is really good and Canberra is between Sydney and Melbourne (I think?!?). Plus, it's much farther than Malta and more well known too.

What's so hard is that they both have good things and I just can't seem to figure out which school and country will prove the most bang for my money!! I'm going to be spending a semester, about 6 months, over there and I don't want to get there and leave right away...

:)

^ Canberra is about two to three hour drive from Sydney and erm... takes much longer time to Melbourne and Melbourne is in a different state to Canberra and Sydney...

Don't know about Malta, but Canberra somewhat reminds me of... a very quiet country town (I apologize if it's actually not... I'm a Sydney-er). That's maybe because of the fact that the capital city is there and it's kinda... political. ^^"

But anyways, I've applied to my home university to go for a semester (or a year? I could always change!) to Kwansei Gakuin University in Japan from Sept. next year. Let's hope I get it! smile.gif

^ yea, canberra is pretty quiet, and there isn't much of a city in canberra.

sydney to canberra is approx 3 hours one way. why not come to unsw? biggrin.gif

Hi guys,

I'm new here...and this is my first post...and i really want to join in this topic because i think it's fun to talk about studying aboard and share my experiences of it and that because me,myself i'm from Indonesia and currently studying in Auburn (a part of seattle which is forest everywhere) and my major is culinary art because i like to do something that related with art especially cooking~ XD
before i was so stressed because i must live far away from my family and no more entertainment (because i live around the forest)...and much more...
but the advantages of studying aboard is to make yourself more independent and, believe me, it is fun! you can make friends from different countries around the world and having more knowledge that you (maybe) haven't see (or know) it before and etc".... XD

Next year i probably will transfer to AIS (Art Instituted of Seattle) to continue my study... wish me luck~ ^^
I believe you guys could also transfer to your dream universities...i will pray for you ^^

GOOD LUCK~! and never give up~~!! hwaiting!! XD wink.gif

I don't have the experiences myself, but I've talked to so many who have that I think I can even answer some questions in regard now... O_O"

hmm got a question. If you're getting financial aid from your current university, do you still get it if you study abroad?

I really want to study abroad but kinda worried about the financial aid and money situation...

I'm currently living in M'sia. I'll be attending University of Queensland next year and I'm currently preparing a check list. I've never been to Australia before. Can anyone suggest important things that needed to be brought over there? thanks a bunch!

i would like to do study abroad in college/university, but i want to know if it's difficult to go to the country you want.
i understand that there are a limited number of spots in every partner program . . .

it just depends how many people apply at your school. Most people do get accepted to exchange/study abroad, but they can't take everyone.

It definitely depends on the study abroad programs at your university. For the University of California system, the requirement is a 3.0 minimum GPA, and there are essays to write, and sometimes professors' letters of recommendation. It also depends on the quota

I'll be finishing my senior year of high school this year and wanting to study aboard. But the thing is, i dont know about the process of applying. I checked on the net, but nothing comes up, it always saying how it good or bad for (first yr uni) students to study aboard and such. But that doesnt concern me as much. I want to study in Korea, but China\Taiwan is fine. im very good at picking up Asian languages, hence the language barrier doesnt bother me. I want to go there to broaden my views on that specific language(s) and know more about their culture(s); im interested in cultures and dialects because i want to become a linguist, as well as a psychologist.
So if you guys know a reliable site that provides details about studying aboard and allowing me to register for universities, please let me know.
If not, i'll be enrolling in Wayne State Uni (thinking of going to that school), in which i have to wait until my 3rd to go aboard and im not willing to wait that long....But if i have to, than i'l gladly wait for the opportunity.
I live in Canada, just in case you guys need to know. Umm...taking 8 university level classes with decent avg, i've been slacking off this yr, thus my avg is pretty low...last yr, i took university classes passed with an A avg. Do uni look at your grade 11 avg? If so, will my chances of getting accepted be lowered as my marks are suffering?
Also, will i stand out because i'm not of korean ethnicity?

It depends on your uni's program. Check with your study abroad office. I get a lot of need-based financial aid from the government, but I think only my merit-based scholarships transferred to my study abroad. HOWEVER, don't forget that there are lots of really fantastic private organizations that give financial aid to study abroad students! For example, Benjamin A. Gilman--they gave me so much money that not only did it cover the rest of my study abroad costs, but there was enough left over to help me travel to a whole bunch of other countries during Easter break!

Another question about financial aid...I know this really depends on my home school and the type of program I want to get in to...But assuming I get 100% federal grants and loans to cover my expenses, how does aid work for things I have to pay for prior to my trip?

The thing I'm most worried about is getting my flight ticket, which will definitely exceed $1000-1400...Then there's also housing which is about $800. Would the typical scenario be that I have to pay for all of this out of my pocket, and then possibly get reimbursed when I actually go?

FYI I'm thinking about going to Yonsei for their YISS program next summer, and I'm from UCI. If anyone could give me some insight that'd be great...I need to figure how much I should be saving beforehand.

I attend a UC, and I still got my federal financial aid for my year abroad. However, it's VERY MUCH adjusted depending on how much you're projected to spend on tuition and housing abroad. Since tuition and dorming costs a lot less for me abroad than at UCI, I got significantly less money for my pell grant.

I'm planning on studying abroad to Spain for Spring 09, and I know its coming up pretty soon, but does anyone know of any other scholarships that I can apply for that don't require a US citizenship. Pretty much, I've gotten all the Fin. Aid I can get from my school, but I'm still looking for scholarships outside of that. I know the Gilman scholarship would have helped me out a lot, but it's only for US citizens. Oh, and realistic scholarships that I can actually get..

Oh and does anyone know about airline "buddy passes"? I'm going to Spain on New Year's Eve and a friend that I'm traveling with has a friend of a friend who said could get her buddy passes, which would mean we could travel there and back for only about $400. I hear it's a gamble though because we're the lowest priority on standby, but does anyone have any advice or experience flying with these passes? Oh and I'm flying from Atlanta if that makes any difference.
