I tend to use the smile n nod method a lot when I don't understand what a person is saying though lol

That happens to me a lot. Except I'm the person who says "Nevermind!". Why? Because I don't have patience enough to repeat what I say several times, especially when it's something small or that doesn't even matter. I'll repeat something twice, at the most, then just give up. I don't care if it annoys people, I get annoyed when I'm asked to repeat myself.

I think it probably means they're trying to tell you something embarassing usually about them but once you say "can you repeat that", they are too shy to say it a second time
