DJ Molaroid NOT DJ Mongaloid!
Anti-social resident DJ/ ID magazine stylist Molaroid chatted to Skrufff this week
about London's new rave explosion and the freaky fashion styles accompanying it and
said he's optimistic about the state of the scene and its future.
"Even though I'm not into new rave it's making people wear bright colourful clothes
again which makes people more optimistic and euphoric- slash- escapist," said
Molaroid.
"It's great when people dress like that instead of the same old black T shirt, black
jeans uniform that you see every day or wear those great big boring jumpers or
denim."
"I hate denim, I think everybody should stop wearing it," he added.
"I know it's easy to wear and it doesn't rip but I just think it's a piece of mini cooper.
For me the world would be a better place if nobody wore denim. Most people are too
scared to wear anything else in case they get beaten up."
Walking around London dressed in wigs, glitterballs and clothes made from 'perspex,
patent and metallic materials', the self-branded futurist said he rarely gets
hassled himself apart from one occasion when he was traveling on London's
Underground with Gauche Chic's equally flamboyant frontman Niyi.
"I was with Niyi on the tube and had a gang of Millwall fans shouting and spitting
on me," Molaroid recalled, "That was harrying and horrible but that's not going to
stop me doing what I want to do or being who I am."
And despite being described as an 'art director, designer, stylist and super brand'
and 'one of London's trendiest fashionistas' by Time Out several months ago, the
Somali born stylist and DJ stressed his interest in dressing up is far more than
merely superficial.
"I come from a really religious Islamic background that goes against completely what
I do but that's not going to stop me and it shouldn't," he said.
"I want to wear these clothes I wear because I know there are other Somali kids out
there who are like me who desperately want to be individuals. People shouldn't be
criticized for standing out, I think they should be applauded."
Molaroid (who's NOT called Mongaloid as we incorrectly mis-typed previously) DJs at
Anti-Social @ Bar Music Hall every Saturday night (free admission, dressing up
recommended).
