Okay, I will be going off to college after this coming summer. And what I really really reallly want to study is Neurology because my dream is to become a Neurologist but I am cluesless about what I should do and take in college to get there. I asked many people but they are, by so far, as clueless as I am. I did reseach online but I do not undertsand the system. At this rate, if I don't know how to head toward my dreams, I might a well end up in a trashcan instead. Help out please! I can't take other major for I see Neurology as the only thing for me in life or else...

Human Biology
Human Anatomy and Physiology
Psychology
Chemistry
Physics
Art
Speech
Microbiology
Bacteri..ology? Don't know if that's even the correct term but basically the inclusive study of bacteria

Those are just off of the top of my head. I asked my counselor the same question and she just listed a bunch of subjects that were required or highly suggested. I know the art seems out of place but that might not concern you because I asked her about Neurosurgery and that was suggested to improve my hand-eye coordination. Yeah...I quickly changed my mind after thinking long and hard about going to school until I'm over 30. lol

If you really are serious about this...talk to a college or high school counselor...

I am hoping that you mean neurologist instead of neuroserugon. Both are hard.

Firstly, you go to college and major in something that is vaguely related to your subject. Some people suggest cognitive studies. In your case, you have to make sure that that major is biological. If you want to be a surgeon, you have to include pre-med requirements.

Then after you graduate, you go to a graduate school and take yet more classes until you finish your doctorate and they can call you doctor. If you want to be a surgeon, you instead take ur MCATs, go off to med school for 4 years, and then after that you do additional training in your speciality. After that, you spend 3-7 years in internship trying to earn certification as an official neurosurgeon.

Salary range for neurosuregery run in from half to 1.5 million dollars a year. Depending on your reputation and skill level or what not. Remember though, that after all your training, you'll end up in 300,000 or so in debt.

I want to become a neurologist as well. Like yujo said. But, everyone keeps telling you to declare a major similar to neurology. You can if you want, but you can also declare something else like for example, art. All you need to do is to make sure you take pre medical classes like biology, chemistry, and other courses. I not am sure if your school offers any neurology classes, but mines does. You can take neurobiology or some other course like medical terminology.

Talk to your pre-medical advisor. Ask your own advisor where the pre-medical advisor is because he will defintely answer your questions.

Any major you want is a bit pushing it. It's more like, any major AND pre-med requirements, which are pretty hefty so I think you should just take a major which includes them.

Remember that just as in college, applying to med school requires its own SAT (MCAT) and you have to do extracurriculars and everything.

my college offers cell biology and neuroscience... imo its a good pre-med major... gives u basics...
check the programs offered in your campus...
or u can check the available courses and see if they offer any course related to neuro-... like what others said...
like what they said.. u can start specializing in neurology when ur in med school..... then u become a neurologist...

there are graduate programs like integrated neuroscience but it's more of research... when u graduate u get a PhD degree... unlike in med school... u become a MD..

im interested in neurology too.. planning to go to med school but i might just specialize in neuroscience nursing since my major is nursing now..

hope that helps...

At my school [UCSD] the major for neurology is Physiology and Neuroscience so that's my major right now... I'm hoping to be a neurologist or a neurosurgeon in the future so I'm planning for med school... But anything can happen right? ^^

i believe there's a difference between a neurobiologist and a neurologist (neurosurgeon)...one requires grad school, the other requires med school...if you're interested in the actual study and research of the biology behind neurology...then you should take a science-related major (biology, biochemistry, neuroscience, etc.)...if you want to go to med school and become a neurosurgeon, then it doesn't matter as long as you take all the pre-reqs for med school.

if you really can't decide, then go to your school as "undecided" and then talk to your advisors about the best major for your career choice. happy.gif

I heard from somewhere that by the time I become a neurologist, I would be around my 30s or 40s. I just hope it's nto a rough road but if it is, I'm going there anyway.

Go for it! smile.gif

I'm intending to do a dual major in cognitive science and neuroscience. It will be tough but you have to go with what you believe will make you happy. More importantly, that the major leads to a job you know you can do and will be satisfied doing (hopefully it will be the job you will do for most of your life).

so is neurology like a specialty of medicine?
just like orthodontics as a specialty of dentistry?

Its best if you are able to speak with the head of school of that area, if your not sure which head of school, just ask your own one so they are able to refer you to them. Its best if you ask academic teachers about this as well, I guess it varies from school to school and country to country.
