how much did you get by filing a fasfa form, and how much are they willing to give? how much did you get from grants/scholarships?

Depends directly on your income, or in most UC students' cases, the income of your parents. Usually if your parents make over a combined income of 100k a year, you don't get anything.

http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/

If your income is below 20k, they can cover almost all your tuition. It really does depend.

I didn't get any financial aid even though my income is seperate from my parents (you have to go to great lengths to prove that your parents don't pay for school, and I was lazy). Scholarships helped me a lot... combined, they take off about 7k per year at UCLA.

I'm an independent student...which means my parents' income is not factored in. (I did go through great lengths to prove that my parents don't pay for anything for me..even though they do..but hey, it's free money"

This year, I got all of my tuition covered plus about 1000 dollars every quarter for spending money. (This is just for grants)

I also got work study about 3000 dollars...(this isn't free money)

And a few thousand in independent scholarships not through fafsa.

Well my mom is single..
So I only had to worry about her income.
Fortunately, she doesn't file taxes in the U.S. She files taxes in Korea.
In my case, I had to get some documents sent over from Korea, stating her income..blahblah..and since she's in Korea and I'm claiming to be an independent student, had to show my rental leases and such..

but the documents they will request from you are different depending on what kind of situation you 'claim'

Yeah... if your parents make more than $100K then you probably aren't going to get much since there are other people who need the money more than you ^^;; The thing that happened to me is that my mum lives in the U.S. and my dad lives in Korea so only my mum's income gets counted and she makes none so I had an EFC of 35 -- but I still only got a Pell grant dry.gif I'm hoping for a little more this year... >___<

they only take students enrolled in a higher education institution (college/university) into consideration...so if by "special private school" you mean "high school," then no, they will not count that.

if you're considered "dependent," the FAFSA will ask for your parents' financial information & yours (if you have income, you have to report it based on your tax forms). usually you have to prove that your parents don't pay a cent in order for you to claim "independent".

i have a question about fafsa also. could i just use my parents' 2005 tax report to fill out the form or do i have to use 2006? because my parents haven't filed their 2006 forms yet.

For the 06-07 school year, I got $3,300 (Federal Pell Grant) which wasn't bad at all, considering how late I turned it in (August)
I also got $750 (Academic Competitiveness Grant)

If your that worried about your Pell Grant, take it up with congress and have them jack up how much a student can get.. cause even with a Pell Grant and Loans.. I myself was only able to get 8 grand, and that because thats all they said I needed.. got my full Pell Grant, 800 from KY CAP Grant, and 2k in loans.. I ended up with 2 grand left over after the fall and the spring, but I needed that money to pay for rent.

i got $0.00 out of $46,000. i hate the way they calculate "income" (they include investments...not hard cash...so you're screwed if your family owns a lot in investments)

THANK FRIGGEN GAWD FOR FAFSA AND GRANTS!!!!!! or else i would've had to pay around $20K this year. ph34r.gif crazy.gif wacko.gif

my financial aid elgibility was about $16,600 with $3000 coming from work study sleep.gif , so my parents' contribution came out to approximately $3,300.
