i love to play around with the flash with night shots or clubbing events with long exposure. Its really different to take a picture for a shutter of 30 seconds then use a flashlight or other sources of light to paint objects around the room.

haha yeah!
i'm pleased i'm getting a nikon d40 (:
i'm only a beginnger, you see.

& i've been advised by LOTS of people that nikons are much better than canons.

nkions and canons are basically the same, its jsut a matter of preference. although i do hear nikons are more beginner friendly.

DSLR wise, considering that unless you're purchasing the new camera ranges (Nikon D300 or it's EOS "equivalent") the technicalities between a CMOS and CCD sensor should be enough to seriously make you reconsider the statement that Nikons and Canons are the same. If you don't understand the design principles between the companies, and say you've bought a Canon for what a Nikon could do better or vice versa, then that's some serious money wasted.

As with all purchases, it comes down to what features you want, and the price point that's relevant. Trust me, when you play with stuff like audio equipment that's innately way more expensive than any camera will ever be, you learn that lesson fast. And also, photographers create photos, not the camera.

my current wallpaper.

Nikon D80 w/ 18-200 f/3.5-5.6

ISO: 100
Exposure time: 0.100 s (1/10)
Aperture: f/4.5

Taken in the local bush @ 6:23PM woo yeah go handheld ^^

i highly doubt that beginners really care whether or not the sensor in their camera is ccd or cmos. i've never run across a person that didnt buy a canon because it had a cmos inside or didnt buy a nikon cuz it was using ccd. i bet that half the people that buy digital cameras dont even know what their camera is using.

what do we care about audio equipment? this is a dslr thread. and if photographers create photos what does it matter if they buy a nikon or canon or any other brand of camera?

Last time I checked the header, this was the DSLR thread, not, "The beginner's DSLR thread."

Specifications-wise, you're right, but I sure wouldn't argue that canon technology and/or nikon technological jargon doesn't get translated into layman's terms for the average customer. Just because people who buy digital cameras may not know what goes on inside their camera doesn't mean the salespeople don't. I mean sure, salespeople are all about maximising profit margins, but i'm pretty sure the average semi-decent sales guy would recommend a canon DSLR if you told him you were going to be shooting sports, and a nikon if high ISO shooting wasn't your main priority (or you used your camera in areas with halogen based white balance, which i've found the EOS-40D to be rather poor in). And for a DSLR beginner to progress, they'll need to improve technique and knowledge, and what could be more basic than a lesson on the difference between a CCD and CMOS sensor in the camera you're using?

I'll make clearer my sentence that said "As with all purchases, it comes down to what features you want, and the price point that's relevant." It's one of the first lessons you learn when you invest in technology, especially with something as expensive as audio equipment. Why get a 32-channel mixing console (at 3x the price) when you can make do with 16 channels? Carrying the analogy over, "why make use of [insert canon/nikon marketing fluff] here when you'll rarely use it and instead learn how to get that one good picture?" Those sorts of lessons can filter down into lesser expensive pursuits such as photography.

As an audio engineer, I've learnt that I only need what I need, and that anything else is a luxury that makes life easier. If you plan on shooting sports often, or need that constant f/2.8 lens for indoor no flash locations such as a church, then by all means, that's great and congratulations on getting yourself a nice piece of gear. But if you're planning on shooting in daylight or a "beginner" as so many like to call themselves here, anything more than the standard kit lens, or maybe one or two steps up from that is just for pure bragging rights.

I find myself needing a wider angle, and I was thinking of going the Sigma route too. Do show some pics when you get it.

last time i checked it wasnt either, but if you cared to check i was responding to a person's post that said they were a beginner.

a lot, whenever you go into a photography class or read a photgraphy book one of the first things they talk about is probably not going to be the different types of sensors in cameras.

So I finally started shooting RAW and I think I'm addicted.

Here are just a couple photographs I took today with:
- Canon EOS Kiss Digital X (XTi)
- Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM
- Canon SpeedLite 580ex (only in photos #1, #3)

Alphonse from Fullmetal Alchemist! Yes I am a dork.

My two films I got from a good friend today - I'm getting my film SLR tomorrow (Canon EOS ELAN 7NE) and I'm really excited.

My favorite photograph of the day. I love to handwrite (not writing like essays and poems but just writing, like keeping a planner and writing random things in notebooks =__=lol)

The Canon XTI should be great. There's really no big deal when you're starting out... either a Canon or Nikon is a fantastic choice. Save the gear debates for until your skill starts pushing the limits of your gear.

stick with the 18-55 kit lens until you feel you need something more.
add the 50/1.8 if you want to try out low light photography, or work with bokeh (blur) shots. it's cheap, so it wont be a problem.
IF you need a longer lens and you're on a budget, the sigma 70-300 APO DG would be the best bet.

after that, it's up to you where you want to go... but kit lens + 50/1.8 would make a good, cheap start

I love shooting RAW. Until it comes time to process.
Thank goodness for Lightroom/Aperture.

Sometimes I prefer straight JPGs....
I am on FaceBook. Ninja mode, tho. So PM me with your details and I'll add you ;D

I'm also going to chime in here and say, depending on where you are in the world, the new Canon 55-250mm IS lens comes out this month and would be a option for a cheap telephoto zoom lens also.

well, it's selling for 260~270 Euros overseas... if that gives you any idea...
i just get the impression that it's going to be similar in quality to the normal kit lens.
the lens body itself seems consistently plastic like the kit lens.
has a UD element, so that's a plus... along with IS.
no USM though... hehe
