here's a couple shots i took today:

my office building

my ride

i got a hoya CPL for the lens, but didn't shoot with it today. just wanted to see what the shots looked like without any filters. i shot my car wide open, and thought it came out a little soft, but nothing to really complain much about. i was more impressed with it's fast and accurate focus. i knew it was HSM going in, but it seemed to focus faster than my sigma 30/1.4! all in all, im glad i got the lens! hopefully there will be many pictures to come in the future! smile.gif

Hey guys.. First time posting in this thread. smile.gif

I'm planning to buy a DSLR camera (and it's my first time having it) so I'm still debating whether I should go with Canon or Nikon. Some of my friends suggested Canon while the others went with Nikon.

I absolutely am clueless about all of this *beginner alert* so I'm hoping you guys can help me. Any suggestions/comments/informations/inputs are greatly appreciated. Thanks guys! smile.gif

*I hope I'm asking in the right thread* ><"

first question is, what will you use it for? i dont think you can really go wrong with either brand when it comes to dslr, it just depends on your uses

I guess.. I'll use it as one of my hobbies. I love to take pictures but I don't have a "decent" camera yet. tongue.gif

I'm my spare time, I love to do photo editing but I'm not a professional photographer though. smile.gif

You know, a point and shoot camera can be decent also. You don't have to get a DSLR to get "better" pictures. The equipment certainly will help, but it's not the only factor smile.gif

that's only if you're shooting in broad daylight and you want the majority of the pic in focus...

bought it used via forums. usually, i'd buy glass new, or at least from a reputable retailer, but i found a couple of particular forums to be very reliable, especially when buying from one of the more active and better known users on the site. all the lenses i've bought were like new condition, as specified by the seller. that's how i got my 70-200/2.8 IS L also. i've also sold my lenses (sigma 18-50/2.8 macro, 70-200/4 L, kit lens, etc) with little or no problems.

when i do buy new, i usually buy from either buydig or BH (with promo codes). amazon, newegg and dell randomly offer special deals that are hard to pass up, but buydig/BH have consistently been good in terms of pricing, and BH especially when it comes to returns.

don't buy used from anywhere else though. i have a craigslist purchase that i sort of still regret. the lens is fine, but required a lot more maintenance than i expected. im debating on selling it and buying a better copy, or forking out the dough and sending it to get serviced by the manufacturer.

I'm always worried when I make expensive 2nd hand purchases. It's just scary to hand over a few hundred bucks to someone for a lens that may have any number of possible defects that may not be evident at first.

What are these reputable forums you use? I've seen so many great deals on Craigslist I've wanted to jump on but I'm always worried. LOL

If this is not allowed, please tell me and I'll delete my post, but Office Depot has CF cards, the 2GB ultra 2 one's for 19.99 right now. Picked some up for my camera today. Hope this helps someone. I know you can never have too much memory.

fredmiranda and photography on the net. if you buy from the more active users who have been there a while, they will usually give you exactly what they say they're giving you.

i dont think i'm ever going to trust craig's list again. im sure there are some good deals out there, but my last experience has left me not wanting to go back.

hi guys, for canon users a burning question...me and a friend were in a "discussion"...regarding the fact the canon pics are usually in need of tweaking and whatnot editing on the PCjust to achieve good pics/ ones that pop or need to be taken with expensive lenses...(cause the kit lens got bad reviews from what she read)
while on nikon, things are simple, easy to take good pics.. and pop is easily achieved...but i said.. in nikon like d40x AF compability is hard and the menu to configure can be tasking...not starting a war of the camera brands..but just like to weigh in on your opinions about this..since you guys are used to taking and editing etc.. smile.gif

QUOTE(watcher @ Nov 15 2007, 01:20 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
the kit lens, for what it's worth, is a good lens. if you stop it down to around f8, it takes decently sharp shots. for a lens you can find as a kit or used for under $100, i think it's great. plus, you can figure out what lens you need next by working with the kit lens.as for the 50, i think it's almost the perfect length. on the xti, the 50/1.8 has a field of view of about 80mm. if you're outdoors and have a little bit of room, you should be fine. but dont expect to take group shots in crowded or compact areas. it's nowhere near wide enough! but it wont be a problem if you have the kit lens. hehe
really? my camera hasnt come yet but hopefully i can learn the use of the kit lens well and go from there.. :)yeah the 50 looks good hehehe
QUOTE(EYJAYJAY @ Nov 15 2007, 04:57 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
obviously the kit lens wont match the high standards of certain people, especially if they have money to waste. but if you are on a budget, especially when you are just starting out, i think the kit lens is pretty nice. i use it a lot
your right on that aspect too... ^^ especially for a newbie right?

cause the kit lenses suck with rebel Xti 18-55mm (i somewhat agree there.... so many bad reviews!)

while on nikon, things are simple, easy to take good pics.. and pop is easily achieved...

The thing is, no matter which brand you choose Nikon or Canon, you're in a win-win situation because they're both great brands.

However I have to disagree with the whole Canon section you wrote. I have the Japanese version of the XTi and it's a fabulous little camera. The kit lens is not great but it's not bad either - I've seen some good pictures from that lens (from my friends - I've never had the kit lens myself unfortunately). Also, all photographs can use some type of tweaking and adjusting on Photoshop, not just photographs from Canon. Lastly, the lenses do produce better images when they're better - as they say, it's all about the glass. All the generalizations you made about Canon are pretty much true for every camera out there imo. Where did you see all those bad reviews about the XTi and the kit lens? Because I have seen almost none but I'm probably biased smile.gif

I used a Nikon D50 for a short time before I switched over to Canon and it was a nice camera but I didn't have enough time to get to know it better so I really can't say anything haha.
