I think maybe the texture is too subtle? My first impression wasn't 'texture' but rather blotchy skin and noise.

For your 40d? Why not the 17-55 IS USM? It's much more useful on your 40d. That L is an UWA for a full frame. I guess you're planning on getting the 5D soon?

wow minji.. for someone who was on such a tight budget merely a year ago, you're going on quite a spending spree. you find a new money tree somewhere?
i guess that 5D is coming soon... haha

I'm only waiting so that it'll knock down the price of the 5D

Body: XTi or 40D?
Lens: EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM or EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM or Tamron 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3
At the moment I'm leaning towards 40D + 16-35mm but maybe I'll go with XTi + 17-85mm or XTi + 18-200 because it's lighter (I think?).
And this is completely random, but what camera bags do you guys own? I've been crazy about Billingham so I have Digital Hadley, Hadley Pro, and 106 presstop. I'm taking the Digital Hadley for the Florida trip since it's the smallest. I also have 2 Canon kit bags and a Kata bag but I don't use them - I suppose I should sell them but I don't know anyone who'd want it =__=;
Anyone heard of bags from Heming's? They're like Billingham except way more expensive (like the equivalent of a Digital Hadley costs 3 times as much as the Digital Hadley which is absolutely ridiculous), if you thought that was possible... I almost got one when I went to Korea but decided it was stupid and canceled last minute lol... They only sell them in Japan apparently - I might change my mind and pick one up when I go to Japan for spring break.
No more spending money on any gear from now on... except for a tripod and a ball head =___=;;;;

Yikes! Where do you get your money?
IMHO, I'd bring the 17-85 if you're bringing one lens.

that said i'd take the xti and either the tamron or your 16-35.
depends on whether you can handle the focal length limitations on the L.

Aren't we all glad that digital means we can enjoy photography as a hobby without all the film and developing costs?

you might as well just do part time gig's to help pay for your gear. i did it a few times (though not nearly enough to pay for the more expensive stuff). and while ur at it, get some experience by shooting as a backup for any event.
