d40x is better bang for your buck.
xsi, you pay a premium because it's brand new and has a lot of new features [like live view and spot metering]
between nikon and canon, you really cant go wrong.
what type of photography you want to get into though?
canon builds certain lenses better than nikon, and vice versa.
for instance, i think canon's telephoto lenses rock nikon's
but nikon has an external flash system that canon can only dream of

When you say it has a better flash system, how so? Do the flashes have more power output compared to Canon's?

BTW. Just played with an XSI and I'm pretty impressed. Live view is different from the 40d's in that you can choose to autofocus without the mirror flipping back down and up. I like the grip and over all shape of the body. Has a more pro look to it. Plus, the kit lens is really good. Took some pics with my memory card inside, and uploaded them to my computer. Noise performance is really good almost as good as the 40d though maybe it's because of heavier noise reduction going on inside the camera as some areas tend to get muddy.

My newbie shot:

The focus wasn't exactly where I wanted, but I'm still learning. happy.gif

menu nav, flash sync options [one pet peeve: how 30D/xti puts your shutter to 1/60 in P mode?! akjfhdsfkjhdsfk], i think even build is better [though others may beg to differ]

i wanted to buy my first dslr (canon xti), but the price is a bit hefty for me.
i will be going to hong kong/japan this summer and was wondering if the prices there are cheaper/wiser to buy it there.

thanks!

Nikon has their "Creative Lighting System", which is absolutely amazing.

Here's a thread that discusses the differences: http://photo.net/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg?msg_id=00NJDW

I have an SB800 with a slave SB600, that I use with my D200. CLS is amazing, and I'll probably pick up a few more SB800s in the future to continue experimenting biggrin.gif
I am on FaceBook. Ninja mode, tho. So PM me with your details and I'll add you ;D

came back from a relatively successful photo shoot at a friend's wedding. the lighting sucked, but flash restored all that was good in life. actually, i was able to do much more with my bounce card + bounce flash than with a diffuser!

in any case.. the one downfall i had was when shooting wide with my sigma 10-20. i don't mind simple photoshopping, but i seriously hated having to fix distortion whenever there was a person near the corner! grrr... not only that, but i've noticed the right side of the images are somewhat soft when shot in low light. im glad those were just a minority of my pictures, but it's lead me to consider my options.

i could conceivably sell my 10-20 and just buy a 17-55 and deal with not having UWA, or upgrade to a 5D and perhaps sell my 30mm, 10-20mm and buy me the 50/1.4. in the end i'll still be short of a uwa, but i guess someday in the future, i could settle for the 17-40/4 L.

what do you guys think?

also, on that note... the 5D is supposedly on a 3 year life-cycle. 5D came out in august of 08. in a few more months... we'll know what's coming. it's just that... how long will i go with just one body? hehe... i need to buy one soon, whether it's my main or backup. these requests are increasing, and for some reason, i kinda enjoy putting myself in these stressful situations @_@

if you say 'best' deal meaning cheaper than suggested retail, you probably wont for another couple of months. right now, it's 899 for the body and kit lens, and that should be the same across all reputable dealers. if anyone sells for cheaper, they're probably trying to scam you.

i would purchase from buydig, dell, or amazon. BH and canoga camera are also good options, but since they're all the same price, i usually go for the more reputable online dealer.

if it's too good to be true, it's usually not.
the only times that i know of where prices are exceptionally low and dependable are the 3 following situations:
1. a rare newegg special sale for specific photog gear
2. amazon gold box
3. every once in a while dell will come out with some huge discount promo

these cover pretty much 99% of the 'too good to be true' deals that i've run into.
that said, cameraaddict is unreliable.
look them up yourself at this site: http://www.resellerratings.com/rlist-s1-n2.html
this is my source i use to double check if the vendors are legit
why not go for that 10% off best buy deal you mentioned?
that's probably the best way to go

that's a pretty good deal... hope you enjoy your new camera... and preferably no lens envy for a while...
