Wait, if you already have an EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 USM, why would you want a worse lens 17-40mm? Unless you're talking about the kit lens. Even then the ranges are almost the same so what would be the point in that?

I think a telephoto lens would be nice for shooting events since you can't get close up easily... EF 70-200mm f/4 is like $600 so maybe that?

yea, i'm talking kit lens. i'm still not very well verse in lenses, so pardon the noob(ness) haha.

telephoto lens, yes, i'm thinking of that... $600? it's almost the same price as my camera, can you recommend a $300-$400 telephoto lens? it doesn't have to be canon, there's no way i would spend that much for now, not until i earn my own money that is.

hey guys, i got a EOS 400D January this year, and yea, after months of experimenting with it, I'm thinking of getting new lenses. It's a little frustrating not being able to get the shots that I wanted because the lens (17-55mm, bodykit lens) that I'm using now.

I'm trying out shots that involve mostly close ups, like events: eg: music showcase, mini fashion shows etc. So, here I am, asking for suggestions, maybe those who are experienced in shooting for events?

here are some samples of my shots (which I hope to improve on)

I was looking at some lenses. Canon EF 17-40mm f/4.0 L USM Lens, which cost a bomb.

Any suggestions for Tamron or Sigma lenses? Yeah, it may not be as good, but I'm looking towards experimenting and doing it for fun, so I'll go something lower in budget.

Thank you. smile.gif

the question is... what do you feel is lacking with your current setup? can/did you use flash? was it a popup or external flash? if you don't use flash, what was your limitation? was it focal length? was your shutter speed not fast enough? did you miss the shot because of poor focusing performance? if focus was an issue, was it because it was not fast enough? or your focus missed? or is this entirely an issue of image sharpness, contrast, etc from the raw?

i know it's a lot of questions, but that should give me a better idea of what you're really looking for.

I have a Sony A100 and I think I'm the only one here who has a Sony dry.gif Everyone here has either Nikon or Canon. I am also a complete noob compared to any of you guys!

I like shooting in macro and things up close but only have kit lens. Should I get a different lens or just stick with my kit lens until I get better? (I'm shooting mainly with the Auto function)

Any suggestion is welcomed and sorry for noobness.

Extension tubes work? Hmm I should look it up on wiki.. I was thinking if I can ever afford a DSLR, I would want one average lens... and a macro one but if lens extensions can work thats interesting. Actually its a bit beyond my logic, wouldn't it throw off the focus?

why would it? all that happens is that the lens elements are moved farther away from the sensor. this already happens when you focus with any lens...

I have no idea mr watcher, thats why I would make an odd comment of that sort. Mental grasp of the whole camera thing is fairly limited when I think it works like a magnifying glass to focus light.

Dunno if anyone saw this or if its useful to anyone

i know i did mail in rebates before, but i still get iffy on them sometimes. canon's customer support doesn't help you very much with the process. if anything, it's best if you register your rebate online first, and then make copies of your UPC and back everything up before you finally send them. haha... great deal if you get all your money back eventually though. i didnt get mine for a few months.

Its a real pity you were searching on the canon Canada site rather than the one for the USA and its supposed to be valid from May 18 to July 19. Still can't afford this stuff but that wasn't my point. Might be a good excuse to spend money thats all..

Canada and the US has different rebates. Canada has the stackable, mail-in "double rebates". US has instant rebates.

I'm a total n00b compare to eveyone here, but always been interested in photography. So I've decided I'm goin to buy myself the Canon EOS 450D with the twins lens kit for around $1500. The guy said its good camera to start for beginners as it is easy to use.

Any comments?

US rebates don't start til tomorrow so they won't appear on the site yet. When they do, it should be here:
http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controll...t=PromotionsAct

I wish they would have rebates on lens I can actually afford and actually want. LOL

Do you really need the new features on the 450D? And what's the other lens they're including? $1500 seems to be way too much for a beginner kit... for that money, you could get a XT/XTi body and really good lens (like a 17-55 2.8 IS) or a much better lens combo (17-40 L, 70-200 f4) for slightly more.

I really really need help in getting another lens cause I know nothing about lenses.
I was wondering what other lens is good for D40x besides kit lens and does not cost a bomb?

u know what? if i had to start all over again, i'd just get the xti + 18-55 kit lens and the 430EX flash. this should cost you under 1K to start. if you want to expand off that, maybe the 50/1.8 and canon 75-300 [3rd gen. USM version]. that should cost you another $75 and $200 respectively.

the reason for this is because you won't know what lenses you'll need until you just start shooting pictures, and you don't want a lens that doesn't fit your shooting needs.

i remember when i first got my camera... i got it with the 85/1.8. i couldn't use it much because it was way too long for the type of shots i wanted to take [though it did give me a decent lesson in shooting with primes]. it's still in my bag as one of my favorite lenses now, but it certainly was not a starter lens!

in any case... i'm suggesting the cheaper lenses simply because you WILL upgrade or change once you start shooting. spend less now, and sell it for minimal loss. then buy the lenses you really want/need. smile.gif

Hi thequondam,

What's a "bomb" to you? And what type of photography do you prefer? Also, which kit lens do you have with the D40X?
I am on FaceBook. Ninja mode, tho. So PM me with your details and I'll add you ;D
