I'm trying to decided between the Nikon D40 and the Canon Digital Rebel XT to take with me to China next week. I'd rather have the Nikon's lenses (and I like the body better, the view screen on the Canon is too small) but it's only 6.something megapixels which is really small for what I'm going to be paying. What should I do? Do you think 6.1 will be too little? (The Canon is 8MP)

are you going to print your pictures? if so, what size will be your prints? you shouldn't worry about megapixels unless you make large prints or like to crop your pictures. otherwise, it's almost negligible. don't let that be a factor in your decision.

Thanks for the response!

I'm probably going to print, but not much bigger than a normal letter size piece of paper, (8.5 x 11) and will probably do some cropping on photoshop, but probably won't need to do anything major.

I switched simply because i prefer the lens range on the Canon line. If your thinking about going Nikon, see what type of lenses you'd want to purchase in the future and decide then. The fact that alot of my friends use Canon helps aswell smile.gif

Hey guys. I've been interested in getting a DSLR for a while now (just saving up money for it, haha). Right now I'm using a point-and-shoot, and it does give me some good shots, but I'm only ever satisfied with how anything looks after running it through photoshop. I don't really have anyone to talk to about this (none of my friends own DSLRs, haha, and a lot of us are into PS), so I was wondering how much post-processing you guys do on your pictures? Do you find that you usually don't have to do any (or much)?

Just an interest question~

Anyone done wedding photography before?

So I'm in a pinch. My gf's sister is getting married but couldn't afford a photographer so basically she asked any friends who has a SLR to do a wedding-photography-by-committee. My gf (having given me my XT as a present last year) 'volunteered' me but I really don't have that much confidence in my skills or my gear to be up to the task. So obviously the easiest part to take care of is the gear... time to go lens shopping wink.gif

So this finally happened this past weekend. I have a totally newfound respect for wedding photographers. I ended up being like the 2nd string backup photographer but man, it was crazy. I stuck with my 17-50 2.8 and a bounce card stuck on my flash all day taking pictures like a mad man hoping to make up lack of skill in quantity. I was so stressed the whole day and I felt so beat the day after.

If nothing else, I've also discovered I'm awful at taking photos on my feet. I took like 1100 photos over 2 days and I think I've got maybe 150 decent shots. I'm feeling kind of let down by my own skill level right now.

I also have serious lens envy. The 2 other guys had 24-70 2.8L's and one guy even let me try his 70-200 2.8 IS.

^Yeah, wedding photographers and event photographers should all be respected D: I shot at my brother's graduation with my 1Ds Mark III and 70-200mm f/4L and I got good shots of him, but my parents complained that I only took pictures of him and not much else sleep.gif

most of my post processing involves adjusting white balance and sometimes adding more contrast, but most of the time, i just use the pictures straight out of the memory card. however, for wedding photos or special events, i take a lot more time. i average about a minute to several minutes per photo.

hehe... i always try to bring 2 bodies to every event. mount a 70-200 on one, and a 24-105 [or 24-70] on the other. or if you're on a 1.6x, use a wide angle like the 10-20 and then a long like the 24-105. allows me to take shots of different perspectives. either that, or be really good about switching lenses. tongue.gif

what do you guys think about purchasin a 350D for AU$300 (second hand - good condition. lens included) just for beginning and have to a taste of photography, and later on (most likely next year) buy a new model if im feeling it. or just buy a new model now (450D, 40D $1500~etc) and forget about the 350D?

how many shots have been taken on the 350D? i wouldn't buy it if it has more than 30,000 shutters. the expected lifespan of the shutter is about 50,000 on the xt [that's how many shots you take before the average xt shutter breaks and needs to be replaced]. i know prices are much higher out there in Aus. so $300 w/ lens is a fantastic deal. However, just be sure you can use it for a year or two before you upgrade later on. Aside from that, this deal might be a real good one.

Howdy all! I'm from Perth and I recently bought a Nikon D60 with the standard 18-55mm VR lens. Realised after 2 weeks that this lens was no way near fast enough for the types of photos that I take, so I bit the bullet and got me one of them Sigma 30mm F/1.4's! This thing is a beaut.

Check out my Flickr! and tell me what you guys think!

Cheers!

even tho the pictures are very plain
i like how the picture has vibrant colors
and it's VERY sharp, maybe it's my monitor.

but your pictures are good.

the sigma 30 is a fantastic lens. only thing i regret is buying it used. i misfired a couple of shots, and i'm wondering if the previous user took good care of that lens. it's too late now, and still takes sharp, vibrant pics 99% of the time. it's definitely the best bang for buck prime lens for a crop camera.

Consider this a research/curiosity phase

I was googling and most lenses seem to be at least a few hundred. o_o far from being affordable to diversify with different lenses in my mindset. Lenses with IS seem to bump the prices even higher. For that sigma 30, would that be able to handle most shots or would the F1.4 aperture end up too restrictive?

what do you mean by restrictive??
and at 30mm on a crop camera, you could take a fairly sharp shot at 1/50s handheld. 1/30 if you have steady hands, which i consider pretty good. if you compress the raw/jpg to smaller resolution, i'd go as far as 1/10s.

Restrictive in terms of what I would be able to take pictures of because wouldn't the smaller aperture mean the focus will mostly be on the subject to cause most of the focus to be on the subject?

Um basically would it mean I can't take scenic shots if I wanted to because im under the impression that a F1.4 are best primarily for portraits or of single subjects... which I think would be a very nice feature actually.
