are you going to print your pictures? if so, what size will be your prints? you shouldn't worry about megapixels unless you make large prints or like to crop your pictures. otherwise, it's almost negligible. don't let that be a factor in your decision.

Thanks for the response!
I'm probably going to print, but not much bigger than a normal letter size piece of paper, (8.5 x 11) and will probably do some cropping on photoshop, but probably won't need to do anything major.

I switched simply because i prefer the lens range on the Canon line. If your thinking about going Nikon, see what type of lenses you'd want to purchase in the future and decide then. The fact that alot of my friends use Canon helps aswell

So I'm in a pinch. My gf's sister is getting married but couldn't afford a photographer so basically she asked any friends who has a SLR to do a wedding-photography-by-committee. My gf (having given me my XT as a present last year) 'volunteered' me but I really don't have that much confidence in my skills or my gear to be up to the task. So obviously the easiest part to take care of is the gear... time to go lens shopping
So this finally happened this past weekend. I have a totally newfound respect for wedding photographers. I ended up being like the 2nd string backup photographer but man, it was crazy. I stuck with my 17-50 2.8 and a bounce card stuck on my flash all day taking pictures like a mad man hoping to make up lack of skill in quantity. I was so stressed the whole day and I felt so beat the day after.
If nothing else, I've also discovered I'm awful at taking photos on my feet. I took like 1100 photos over 2 days and I think I've got maybe 150 decent shots. I'm feeling kind of let down by my own skill level right now.
I also have serious lens envy. The 2 other guys had 24-70 2.8L's and one guy even let me try his 70-200 2.8 IS.

most of my post processing involves adjusting white balance and sometimes adding more contrast, but most of the time, i just use the pictures straight out of the memory card. however, for wedding photos or special events, i take a lot more time. i average about a minute to several minutes per photo.
hehe... i always try to bring 2 bodies to every event. mount a 70-200 on one, and a 24-105 [or 24-70] on the other. or if you're on a 1.6x, use a wide angle like the 10-20 and then a long like the 24-105. allows me to take shots of different perspectives. either that, or be really good about switching lenses.

how many shots have been taken on the 350D? i wouldn't buy it if it has more than 30,000 shutters. the expected lifespan of the shutter is about 50,000 on the xt [that's how many shots you take before the average xt shutter breaks and needs to be replaced]. i know prices are much higher out there in Aus. so $300 w/ lens is a fantastic deal. However, just be sure you can use it for a year or two before you upgrade later on. Aside from that, this deal might be a real good one.

I was googling and most lenses seem to be at least a few hundred. o_o far from being affordable to diversify with different lenses in my mindset. Lenses with IS seem to bump the prices even higher. For that sigma 30, would that be able to handle most shots or would the F1.4 aperture end up too restrictive?

what do you mean by restrictive??
and at 30mm on a crop camera, you could take a fairly sharp shot at 1/50s handheld. 1/30 if you have steady hands, which i consider pretty good. if you compress the raw/jpg to smaller resolution, i'd go as far as 1/10s.

Restrictive in terms of what I would be able to take pictures of because wouldn't the smaller aperture mean the focus will mostly be on the subject to cause most of the focus to be on the subject?
Um basically would it mean I can't take scenic shots if I wanted to because im under the impression that a F1.4 are best primarily for portraits or of single subjects... which I think would be a very nice feature actually.
