Does anyone have any problems taking pictures in certain places with DSLR then with a point and shoot? Like people giving you trouble, thinking that with a DSLR and a huge lens that you are"pro" you could be taking pictures that you aren't supposed to whereas if you were taking it with a regular point and shoot? Please discuss.

why is it a problem, i would like to get attention to be looked as a pro lol.
it's not my fault i like big chunky cameras that can take beautiful pictures.

not at all. people come up to me and ask if i could take a pic of them. they leave me their email/number so that i can get back to them later with the pic. when i have my 70-200/2.8 on, people move outta the way for me. it's pretty neat tongue.gif

^ yeah, its just something about having those white lenses which makes people think that way. I was the same as well as the only times I really saw those white lenses were in professional sporting events and wildlife specials on pbs/discovery.

So I just picked up photography as a hobbie 3 months ago.

Please critique some of my work at http://www.flickr.com/photos/haraharo/

What kind of camera do you use?
I like your pics, nice and clear quality. wink.gif

^He/she uses a Canon EOS 40D but I don't think it is the camera that makes the photographs. He/she would get just as great results with Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi or even with a point and shoot smile.gif

I'd get either the D40 to save money or the D60 but not the D40x. It's just hyped up for megapixels.

It looks nice but ridiculously expensive. The 5D isn't as good as D700, but I'd rather get the 5D since it's almost half the price. People call the 5D Canon's biggest mistake because they released such a good product (a digital camera that is still popular after 3 years is pretty damn good) that it's going to be hard to develop a successor that is better laugh.gif

It has a pop up flash! +1
Also you can use Nikon's "EF-S" lenses with it too.

I know this is the DSLR thread but does anyone have any experience with a manual SLR and developing?

I just got out the darkroom and my teacher was busy but when on my contact sheet, some of my photos were extremely dark but when I did a test strip on those super dark ones and exposed them for a shorter time, they came out lighter. Does that mean they were overexposed or underexposed (too much or too little light) when I took the photo? Any help would be appreciated! I just started photography around two weeks ago and we're fortunate enough to have a wet lab at school.

Nvm! I asked our aid XD

I've been debating which one to get between the XTi and the XT.
I'm just a high school student who really enjoys photography, but is not exactly familiar with DSLRs yet (a noob, pretty much).
The XTi's and the XT's price differences are by $151 (with the XTi for $619 and XT for $468) on buydig.com

Haha, I think I've gone through forty-some pages in this thread trying to learn more about DSLRs from you experienced Soompiers and would like to ask for preferences.
Photography is a hobby for me and I have a passion for it, I can say, but I'm not sure which DSLR would suit me better considering the price difference is pretty big. mellow.gif I really like how the XTi has more functions, though (obviously). :/

Also, can anyone tell me if they're Vista-compatible? Because when I looked up the two DSLRs on B&H, the newest Windows they're compatible with is XP. I'm not sure about the ones from buydig.com, though. And if those online stores (i.e buydig.com, B&H) have sales like on Black Friday and holidays?

Thanks in advance. smile.gif

You look into the XS?
I have the XT and I got it at a pretty decent price but I think its worthwhile to get the XSI or XS to get it with the 18-55is kit lens. The image stabilized lens goes for about $150 itself not to mention the screen is bigger, supports live view, and uses SD cards over the compact flash cards which are getting harder to find at good prices dry.gif
Yeah, the XS is about $700 which would blow up both of the budgets, but something to consider.

I don't think there's actually that much difference between the XT and XTI... visually its a larger screen. Otherwise its just little upgrades and if you're into the megapixel war, that has 10 vs the 8mp although I find the 8mp to be adequate for my needs.

My xt works fine with vista although I usually use a card reader out of a strange habit.

Hey all , I just stopped by at my local electronics store and they had a Canon Rebel XTi 10.1 MPX w/ 18-55mm lens and said I could get the demo model for $500 + tax CAD, is that a good deal? it seemed like it was and I was amazed at the photo quality that it took.

Also should it be wise for me to get an extended warrenty ?

Yeah, kind of, very briefly, hahaha. Mainly because it's way over my budget since I'm probably paying for it out of my own pocket rather than my dad, and I don't have a job yet either. So, I haven't and don't think I'll consider in buying it. vicx.gif Thank you so much for your preference though.
I guess I'll just have to go to a local store and see the cameras for myself before I make a decision.

Thank you once again. smile.gif

there are Nikon and Canon fans all over this place
but i took the path less travelled and picked up one of these!

10mp sensor, in camera IS system, live view all for 550 USD!
My FIRST DSLR
Here are some shots that i took in NYC

Only downside is that it employs the 4/3rds sensor, which means i have to crop back down to a 3/2 format for prints.

QUOTE (erure @ Aug 1 2008, 02:22 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
I need to vent. My friend recommended a website company named mypublisher, where they print and bind photo books for you. I thought this would be a good idea to get for friends and family, so I re-edited all the photographs that were going to be on the book (that took painfully long) and ordered five identical books on Sunday. Mypublisher said that it takes 1-4 business days to process the book, and since I'd ordered on Sunday (technically it was Saturday night right after midnight), I thought that at the latest, I'd have the books on Friday (I'm leaving for Korea tonight) if I paid for overnight shipping. I got a shipping confirmation e-mail yesterday and was happy that it went according to plan and that I would have the books today. However, the FedEx tracking did not come up (the window just said that there were no orders with that tracking number) until today. I checked it fairly regularly too so that I knew what was going on. It turns out that they shipped the books today and they won't arrive until Monday, and by then I'll be in South Korea. WTF. I'm so pissed right now -- I sent an angry e-mail to mypublisher, because it seems like they lied about the shipping. Someone was not doing their job. I want a refund but I highly doubt they will give me one. I'm so pissed off.

//edit
Okay so I vented and now I'm back to being sane. It still pisses me off when I think about it, but in the end, I guess it's my fault for not doing it earlier. It just annoys me because it seems like they were lying when they said that they shipped the item and sent me the tracking number, but it wasn't actually shipped until today. I've been having terrible luck with on-line purchases lately, from that stolen package to this.

i've gone through mypublisher before (through costco when they had like a 2 for 1 sale on the books) and the shipping went through REALLY fast O_O i ordered about 3 times through them and each time they came earlier than expected. with ordering and delivery it took less than a week. sorry to hear that you had a bad experience sad.gif

how did the quality of the books come out? mine didnt come out as well as i had hoped, but i think it's probably the P&S camera and the photo adjustments.

Heartcore, thanks for the recommendation for blurb. now i want to go shoot to make a book haha
