is there anything out there similar to the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 but with ZOOM? man, foot zooming is frustrating the heck outta me.

if you've got some change to spare, $1100'll get you a canon 24-70L. i've shot with this lens before and it's amazingly sharp. has a fair zoom range with a fixed 2.8 ap, but it's a bit heavy to be carrying around all day. it felt like a monster strapped to my xt, especially since i don't have a battery grip.

sigma has it's own 24~70/2.8 that costs about $400~450. it's a decent lens, and a good price for what you get.

tamron also makes a 28~75/2.8, and costs around $380 (350 after rebate). it's sharper than the sigma, almost as sharp as the L lens. but the build quality is not as good as sigma/canon. it's the lightest of them all, but i dont think the build is bad at all. optics is superior and i think it's the best mid-range zoom that's not the canon L.

i think those two are the 'fastest' you could find for a zoom with 50mm focal range. i almost bought the tammy, but i just felt it wasnt wide enough, and if i were to get the sigma, i started thinking i could pay twice the money and not only get exellence but peace of mind as well. crazy how a lens can give you a boost of confidence when going out to shoot.

[edit] i just thought of it now, but there are wide angle options as well. tamron 17~50/2.8 and sigma 18~50/2.8. they're just like their longer focal range counterparts. tammy wins in optics, sigma wins in build. there's no L lens version, but there is somethin that comes really close, and it's the 17~55/2.8 IS. it might as well be an L lens, but i guess the folks at canon didnt think so. tokina also has a 16~50/2.8 coming out that people are having high expectations for. i cant say much about it, but if it lives up to what people are buzzin about, that might be the perfect fit for a semi wide-angle + mid-range zoom lens (on a cropped camera of course)

i got an amazing self portrait i'll post up, wow i was amazed how i even took it, even tho it's very cliche.
i realize that lens isn't a big deal with photography, it really depends on how you take the picture.

I'm practicing with my 18 - 55 that came with the camera
I'd have to say that it's a pretty neat lens lol... happy.gif

lenses ARE a big deal when it comes to photography. technical quality (sharpness, distortion, vignetting, blah blah) may or may not mean much to some, but a len's properties have a significant effect on your image (i.e. aperature ranges dictate your "artistic" potential for some shots).

if you took a great shot and you're proud of it, why not share?

Why do you want the D40 over the D50? I think the D50's better because you have more choices for lenses... And the price difference isn't that much... Some places have the D50 as cheaper than the D40... But that's just my opinion.

And feel free to put up pictures ^___^ I posted a picture I took with my fisheye even though it's not a dslr...

I'm choosing the D40 because of the price difference. Every dollar counts for a parttime working high school senior. =/

Yeah.......... total noooooob right here. smile.gif Any criticism/comments? smile.gif

^ I agree. There are way too many focal points and it just makes the whole picture look... crowded and unfocused >__< But I'm a noob as well ._.

But... the D40 kit is $558 while the D50 kit is $500... ;;;;;;

By the way, did you guys hear about the Nikon D40x coming out? I googled D40 and there was some information about it.
http://www.dpreview.com/news/0703/07030602nikond40x.asp
So all they did was change the CCD to 10mp (and have faster continuous shooting) -- obvious attack at Canon's Rebel XTi... I wonder if this means the D40x is better than D50 or not... +_+

street photography can be interesting.. but im no good at it. i just think the angles are a little too extreme (or even pointless, to be blunt) in the street pics. try taking pics of architecture or macro/nature shots.

Im kindda contimplating if i should buy the nikon d40 or the d50. I really want my DSLR, and Im in a tight price range of some where between 500 to 700 dollers. Im trying to buy it on Oahu, cause I still would like to go out and test it out before I purcahse it. My chances of finding the d50 is really slim here, and I was wondering if I souhld just go for the d40. Im mostly gonna take portirates, and maybe land scapes and other things that happen to fancy my eye. And I was wondering if the kit lens on the d40 (AF-S DX 18-55 mm F3.5-F5.6 G II) is gonna do me any good for portirates. Well thanks for the help.

Where did you get those prices? ph34r.gif

I think you're talking about B&H because I know the D40 kit is $558. But the D50 kit is $700. Body only is $500.

Whoa... I SWEAR BH Photo had that price and then they took out the D50 kit ($500)... The D50 body alone is $450 while the D40 kit is $558... And the lens is around $100 anyway...~~
