I think I do...

What do you mean? Isn't that a good thing?

Haha he's still a little puppy~ His name is 곰돌이 (teddy bear) but I call him 곰탱이 -.-lol He's half Shi Tzu half Maltese, and it was a pain in the butt taking photographs of him because he got scared when I pushed the lens towards his face (I had to for the fisheye shots, since the focal length is so short) and he fidgeted a LOT...

He's a bundle of cuteness but thanks to him, my grandparents don't care about us (grandchildren) anymore tears.gif

can i call him 곰탕이???????????

I guess what I mean to say is that I feel that I'm limiting the extent of creativity by simply first framing the image in my viewfinder before I actually get to look at the image in my own head...
if that makes any sort of sense.

sharpness and contrast are definitely features which can differ depending on your equipment. so is lighting [via flash]. you can make do with the basics, but good gear makes taking good pictures easier and minimizes post processing time [assuming you know how to use your camera.]

30d -> xti is not really a downgrade in IQ[image quality]. rather you lose the convenience of the command dial and the build quality & ergonomics of the body. a real downgrade in IQ would be downgrading from the 17-55/2.8 IS to the 18-55 kit lens [non-IS non-USM]. or going from a 70-200/2.8 IS L to a 70-300 APO DG [sigma]. in a case like this, you'll see a noticeable difference in out-of-camera image quality.

i understand the photographer makes the shot, and i also understand there's a lot of things in life in general that are 'unnecessary' but if you want better pictures, immediately and potentially, you get better gear. whether or not this is worth the money is up to the photographer him/herself.

on a final note, this is definitely a gear thread. look at the first post! minji posted all our gear, not a collection of all our pictures.

yea true xti isn't really a downgrade, but i really miss the iso 3200 and 1/8000th shutter LOL.
and xti did come after 30d, with newer technology.

and you're right lenses are much more important the the body itself, but sometimes i just wish people had more creative mind then just the equipment itself, ya know?
no big deal, i'm just looking for those jaw dropping pictures.

this hit the mark, mhm maybe i should make an official photography picture thread on artwork section.

^yeah I would get pocketwizard if I could afford it. At $200 each, and needing to get one with for a camera and each flash, I can't afford it. How about cybersyncs?
I only know what I've read: cheaper than Pocket Wizards, basic functionality, much shorter range, slightly lower reliability (but better than cheapo Ebay triggers) , cheap/flimsy build quality (including no way to lock it in the hotshoe).

i made a REALLY ghetto homemade pop-up flash diffuser:

The results:

Not exactly night and day, but it does a decent job of softening up that harsh light from the popup flash. I'll try to work on making a new one. Perhaps i'll bother to cut in straight lines and measure out dimensions.

When you diffuse the pop up flash, you get even less distance than the 10ft range it usually has. You can up the iso for more distance, but you get a little more grain. Not to mention battery drain from the camera body. But other than that, pretty good for a ghetto set up. I've seen one project where it bounces the pop up flash to the ceiling through the use of a mirror and cardboard.

I attend RIT for pj, & my instructor made my class tape up the back of our viewfinders & go shoot pictures. You do not understand how tempted I was to pull that blasted blue tape back T_T (especially since manual mode + manual focus) It was a good exercise though.

haha... that's pretty cool. every once in a while, i cant really use the viewfinder because it's not physically possible for the angle i want to take it from. for instance, when there's a huge crowd, and i can't bowl through them, i gotta shoot from an aerial angle. so i just stretch out my arm and shoot blindly pointing in a downward angle. or sometimes, i wanna take a really low shot and dont feel like crawling on the dirt floor. you get some pretty interesting perspectives from down there. it's like how you see the world when u were a kid.

^ Even at full tripod height, I used to have to bend over slightly to look through the viewfinder. Used to kill my back. Picked up an Angle Finder C and now much better. Even more useful for the low shots which you describe. Amazing how much they charge for basically a right angle mirror with some plastic around it.

I need to sell my Tamron lens (18-200mm it's listed in the gear list on first page) because it doesn't work for full frame. I'm selling it for $220 and it's gently used, like new and comes with a hood (no box though). If anyone's interested, feel free to PM laugh.gif P.S. It's Canon EF-S mount.

Here's an important question. Do you guys shoot JPEG or RAW? I shoot RAW+JPEG(small), but I'm wondering if it really is worth it to shoot RAW. It makes editing a lot easier, no doubt, but the process becomes time consuming if you've shot hundreds or thousands of photos. So what do you guys shoot? And my question is especially directed to wedding photographers, since you guys probably shoot thousands of photos in one day.

^I've shot an average of 2-3000 pictures in the couple of weddings I've done. All were RAW and I know what you mean about the time consuming editing. But RAW is such an exposure crutch that I can't afford not to use. I've saved a couple of pictures that would have been perfect but because my in-camera meter can be easily tricked, it was under/over-exposed. Thank God for Lightroom and Photoshop batch edit actions.

ETA:

I see you do both jpeg and RAW. You ever use the jpegs? If you're exclusive to one, I would just use that instead of both.

I usually go for JPG and Raw... with a ton of storage because I suck at pictures and I get an average of 25% mega blur shots.

I use the large JPG to preview, and if they are good enough I just use it... and I go for the raw when I want a bit more out of the shot. Takes up a ton of space though sad.gif
