I just recently jumped onto the DSLR side with my purchase of the Nikon D40 which comes with the 18-55mm. Still learning a lot... some early shots.

Testing out the zoom here...

We all wear masks. Everyone, everyday... sometimes we wear them so much, we forget who we really are. And sometimes if we're lucky, someone comes along and shows us who we really want to be, who we should be.

Tumblrrr.

^Could your viewfinder focus be off? The diopter focus thing is right next to the view finder click it up and down a few notches and see if it helps?
(Don't remember if it focuses the whole shot or just the focus squares)

I'm sure some of you have seen the 5D mark2. What do you guys think about it? Me, it didn't live up to the huge hype.

^ yea, nothin too special. movie HD mode makes it interesting, but for most photogs, it wont matter. 3' LCD was nice, and it has the usual dust reduc and latest digic sensor. curious about the autofocus performance as well as noise [21MP is a lot!]. all things considered tho, it's 2600, which is how much the old 5D cost. so i guess it's not bad of a deal. when rebates kick in, i think it's fair enough to say the MkII would be a popular pick [if not already]. i'd pay an extra couple hundred for the MkII when rebates hit.

I find myself liking RAW mode more and more. How many people here shoot in RAW and how many people here actually PREFER shooting in JPG? (assuming that storage space is not an issue).

We discussed this before, but for me I like to shoot RAW+JPEG(small) smile.gif

Anyway I just got back from Yellowstone National Park and it was a lot of fun but I'm super tired >_<

You're lucky! My camera just has Raw or Raw+Large JPG but more often than not, I find myself cooking those raws to compensate for my randomness of the shot :x

Guys, I'm a beginner in photography hence it makes me a beginner at choosing a good DSLR camera that's worth my money! What are some good cameras out there that is suitable for a beginner to play around with, preferrably Canon or Nikon (not Nikon D40, because of the low megapixels)? And it'd be great if that camera reaches more than 8 megapixels.

Thanks smile.gif

Go to a store and try out several bodies and find out what is most comfortable in your hands and which user interface you like best. You're buying into a whole system when you invest in a DSLR. Don't fall into the whole Canon vs. Nikon garbage that people spread on forums. They're both good. In my opinion, megapixels aren't a big deal if you're not doing large prints.

What I'd recommend:

Nikon: D50, D70s, D80, D90
Canon: XT, XTi, 20D, 30D, 40D

^ So megapixels wouldn't matter? I always resize the photos I take, I thought of just purchasing Nikon D40 seeing heaps said it's suitable for beginners but I was a big reluntant with the amount of megapixels available. I guess I'll have to rethink about that now.

Another consideration is my budget, so I'll have alot to think about sweatingbullets.gif

if you resize your pic to make them smaller, doesn't really matter. if you like to CROP your pics, then more megapixels are better.

I have the D40x & it's definitely a beginner's camera. I recently bought a 50 mm lens that can't autofocus on it -- so if you want a bigger array of lenses that WILL autofocus the D80 is a nice camera. Whenever I have projects I end up renting camera bodies.

(I'm a Nikon enthusiast. I recently rented the D300 & it was so niceeeeee)

How about Sony DSC-H10? What are some of the pros and cons among people's experiences with this camera?
