Out of curiosity, have any of those 4/3 cameras been released yet?
I am curious about its performance in terms of noise and low light situations because I thought one of the advantages in Dslrs was to get a larger sensor... which would disperse the 10+ megapixels over a larger area thus reducing the nose

To answer your question, awdark, it's rumored that the sensor will be the same sensor's use in the e-volt systems. They're not quite like the D700, but I'd say it's pretty comparable to the XTi. Just because the size of the body is small, doesn't mean the sensor has to be as well. The Micro 4/3 is small because it lacks a mirror, not in sensor size.
The mockup for the micro 4/3 from olympus is probably a year or so away, the G1 from Panasonic will be out soon.

At ISO 1600, in camera noise reduction set to low

Do you guys think it would be a good idea to get the AF-S Nikkor 50mm f1.4G? Its being released around December, so i figure i'd be able to start saving up for it. Also have to consider that the lens is worth nearly as much as the camera im using, because im currently using a D40 with the kit lens and a 55 - 200mm.

specs and info here: http://www.dpreview.com/news/0809/08092201...mm_1_4glens.asp

when it comes to lenses, the primary question to ask is whether or not you need it. it's a great lens in and of itself, but if you're not gonna use it often, i don't think you should buy it. you should get some data on how often you use 50mm in your shorts, as well as how often you use your lowest aperture settings on your lens. also, another good practice is to get your kit lens, and lock it at 50mm and take pics all day like that. see whether ur fit for life with primes. some people swear by it. i sometimes do it, but zooms will always take up more time on my camera

epark, are those pics 100% crops? or are they size reduced images?

watcher,
Unfortunately, i forgot that picasa resizes all images. I will upload 100% crops later.

*Edit
here they are:

in all fairness, i do believe that i underexposed the second image...

here's the crop after a mild treatment in noiseware:

It's nothing like the D700, but then again, it is about 8 times cheaper, and i would say with confidence that i wouldn't mind squeeking out a 4x6 at ISO 1600.
Perhaps i'll try a conversion from RAW. I hear there's less noise reduction artifacts and a lot more detail retention.

I know I shouldn't be posting here.. but there's no thread for film cameras.
I purchased a Minolta Hi-Matic G2 today and I'm wondering if anyone else has it too.
How is the shooting quality ? And where do I put the batteries in ? O_O

Yeah I think there is supposed to be a bit less with raw but thats more than reasonable (in a good way) for my standards if its at 1600 iso!

I fell for the Olympus E-420 after I saw my friend's Olympus E-410 -- the size and the weight was just too good to be true... Scored a nice buy for a used one with a pancake lens (25mm f/2.8) and I'm very excited. Hopefully I can just carry that around every day -- the camera (with the battery and everything) and the lens put together weighs HALF as much as my 5D alone.

So I was just wondering about the four-thirds system. The conversion factor is 2.0, no? Because some people were arguing that it technically isn't and whatnot so I got confused...

hahahaaa
Welcome to the club minji.

www.fourthirdsphoto.com

I believe the crop factor is 2.0
shooting in 4/3rds is great for portaiture, but it gets kinda annoying if you want to print (since printing formats are all in 3/2).
*edit. Perhaps you can update your profile on the first page...so that i'm not all by my lonesome~~ wink.gif
and don't forget to upload some samples!

Thanks erure for adding my gear to the first post!

Just got my F1.4D and playing around. Here is F1.4 and F4 just for fun. Holy sharpness at F4!

Hey guys,

With the impending release of the Canon G10, people seem to selling their own G9s on used sites. Could you guys advise me with your expertise on whether I should go ahead and buy a used G9 mint I found for 330, or wait for the new updated G10.

Thanks biggrin.gif

Technically, The G10 or the G9 is not a DSLR.
IMO, instead of blowing 330 on a point and shoot, spend another 70-100 bucks and get a not-so-entry-level Olympus E-410, or spend a little more and get the updated E-420.
Jeffy, most of your shots seem a little "Warm" to me. Was that intentional?

I have the G9, and it's a great little camera. Actually, I sort of don't like how they arranged the knobs on the G10, because instead of having two separate ones for ISO and menu, they piled it on top of eachother and overall the design just looks really awkward to me (but the lens is more wide, so it's a hard decision). The new G10 will be $500, so if you can afford it, then why not? But if the wider lens doesn't really matter to you, then the G9 seems like a good deal to me.

depends on what you want to shoot. different lenses different purposes.

epark... while the dslr is a better option if you have the money, it wouldnt be just another 70~100 bucks! add lenses to cover the focal range that the g9 does and it's easily going to hit 600+. and while the evolt is quite small, the g9 is still plenty more portable.

anywhoo... i sorta regret buying the t2 now. it's cool watchin HD off my tv, but ionno... i'm not using it as often as i hoped i would.

550 USD for a e-420 with a kit lens (14-42)...
don't let the word "kit" fool you. This is one of the best kit lens that is packaged out there.
I'm just saying, if you're spending the money ANYway, why not get a better camera?
I'm assuming money isn't an issue here, if the poster can afford a G10.

That's the thing I've been thinking about. The knob looks like it'd be the first thing to snap off and on a whole, it doesn't look as portable as the G9. However the wider lens... blush.gif

Thanks for the replies guys. I'm just looking for a full-featured camera that's PORTABLE. As I'm not serious enough to go get kits and the works yet, I thought a portable unit that still has the features that would allow me to grasp techniques and would be a good starting point before proceeding further would be the G9/G10. If there's any others, let me know!

Get the G9. It's way more camera than you need right now. As you get better, you'll most likely get an external flash to mount on it. There's so many attachments for it too.
