^ I love my 50mm/1.4. I debated for so long whether or not to buy it-- but it was definitely worth it.

Depends how much you're willing to spend, and whether you want to get more lenses. The $300 difference between the d40 and eos 1000 can get you a nikon 55 - 200mm VR.
You should also have a look at the twin lens kit, and the d40x. Go out and actually have a look at the camera, see which one you like the weight and size of.

Hi guys,

I used to be on soompi 3 years ago and disappeared.

Couple months back i found a great deal for an Xti (400.00 w/ kit) and now I have roughly $1,000 saved up.

I consulted many people about which lenses to purchase, and i've decided on an L series lens.

I am looking to take fashion pictures, as well as "all purpose lens" and was wondering which lens would be great for that. I have been told to get: Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM || Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM Ultra Wide Angle Zoom||

Another question i am seeking is this, I heard L series are the best quality, and if its true should I continue just buying an L series lens? cause I am looking for my 2nd to be a macro

Also, ive been looking into forums and i see mixed reviews about IS, i mean is it worth it with landscape/macro/fashion pics?

While L lenses will give you the best quality, it's really up to you to decide how much the upgrade is worth to you. Don't just get a L lens for the sake of the L lens.

If I had $1000 and I needed a general purpose lens, I'd probably just get the EF-S 17-55 2.8 IS.

i have a question about the XTi:
i dont have an external flash, just the internal pop up one on it right now. does anyone know why or how to prevent the crazy excessive flashing when it's too dark? people think i'm like a crazy paparazzi when i use it at night. sometimes it works and sometimes it doesnt.

^the strobing is to help the camera autofocus. It'll be harder to get focused shot in very dark situations if you turn it off. It should be in your custom functions somewhere. Look for something saying "AF-assist beam" and turn it off if you want.

How is it? smile.gif

I recently sold my Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II and got Canon EF 50mm f/1.2L USM -- to be honest I thought it wouldn't be much different from the f/1.4, but it's incomparably better.

Menu > Tools 2 > Custom Function > Custom Function 05 > Does not emit.

I've tried turning it off before. Doesn't really work that well because yes, you don't get a crazy seizure inducing light, but your lens also just endlessly goes back and forth trying to focus.

I don't know exactly how it is. I haven't gotten it yet, it's in the mail.
But from what i've seen from google searches, the bokeh is very attractive (at least to me).
This is my first prime lens that i've used. I'm glad i got a camera with liveview. It'll make using the MF a little easier.

they all good, but i'll say canon. if you gonna ask for advice in the future on gear and settings, there will be more people to help you. soompi or other forums. [nikon has popular support too, but as some mentioned, the focus limitations on the d40 not all that great]

what kind of fashion pics? for macro work, a dedicated macro lens is much better. for landscapes, you'll find that the 16-35 is better, but i know some people who prefer longer focal lengths. what focal range do you use with your kit lens? you should follow your shots and see which focal range is best for you. that should decide which lens you want/need.

as for getting L. L series lenses are cream of the crop in the canon line. should you buy only L? maybe, maybe not. i find there are some great non-L lenses in the canon line-up. 50/1.4, 85/1.8, 17-55/2.8IS are a few. depending on what your standards are, you might be ok with getting certain non-L primes or the 17-55/2.8 IS. in fact, the 17-55 uses L optics. only limitation is that it's an EF-S mount, for cropped cameras only.

the 100mm macro for canon is a GREAT macro lens. it can make a great backup prime to the 85mm.

I can't wait to get one. Really anticipating my first full sensor camera. Problem is, I think the demand and pre-orders which were filled near instantly will make it difficult for me to get one when they are available next month. My hope is to get one as soon as I can. I'm also going to pick up a 24-70 2.8 and 85 1.2 along with it. Can't wait. I was also originally thinking to sell my 17-55 but now I'm thinking I should keep it as a backup while I still plan to keep my 40D as a backup. It would also come in handy when I don't have the 24-70 mounted on the 5D ii.

AF is a designation for autofocus, and DC means that it's primarily meant for digital SLR's with cropped sensors. i dont see why both aren't labeled on the 18-200 lens. there are, however, different variations of the lens, as you say. there's a version with OS, which is like VR for nikon. it means optical stablization. and theres another version with OS and HSM. HSM is hypersonic motor. it's similar to SWM and AF-S lenses for nikon.

personally, nothin beats the nikon 18-200 VR. it tops ALL 18-200mm lenses across the board. if i got a hyperzoom, that's the only lens i'd buy, and it's worth the money. however, if you want a cheaper 2nd best option, i'd go with the sigma 18-200 OS. image stablization helps a lot when shooting beyond 100mm.
