Well its mainly hobby...but i want to get a good standard SLR and had to choose between them.
how is the 40D better ?
actually it's not that much better, Professionals use XTI too.
Trust me, a lot of people took AMAZING photos with xti.

DR and noise control are much better on the 40D.
That alone is worth the extra $$. But again, at least for me, I'd only make that financial commitment if i knew for sure i was planning on getting paid for my photography.

Seriously, if you have the opportunity to choose between the two, get the better one. If money is a problem, I guess you can settle for the xti/450d.

Echoing this, you should just let your budget guide you.
Although, I'm one of those guys that hated it when my friends were getting $2k guitars and they didn't even know how to string 2 chords together.
Not a referendum on your photography skills. Just revealing a little of my bigoted mentality.

I think there's also a difference to someone who wants a camera with 'room to grow' and the other people who believes that owning an expensive camera automatically makes you a better photographer.
I've always been a believer in that... if you don't know the purpose (what it does) and value (how much it affects you) of the upgrade, you have no business upgrading.

I have my eyes on 2 or 3 DSLR cameras:
Sony DSLR A200K + 18-70 mm Lens Kit
Sony DSLR A300K + 18-70 mm Lens Kit
Which one would you recommend?
I really like the Canon ones, but some of them are pretty expensive. Can you show me Canon DSLR cameras for about 600-800 $
The budget isn't that big, so can you guys recommend a good DSLR camera?

WTF. The D3 costs over $4000 -- I'm hoping it was a typo. Out of those three, of course the D3 wins
Canon DSLR for $600-800: XSi, XTi, XS, XT, used 40D
By the way, I'm hoping to add links to people's flickrs on the gear list (1st page) so if you have a flickr, write it on this thread

Hahahaha! I just saw the mistake, yeah it's a typo
The Canon ones, you've mentioned - which one would you recommend if you can only choose 1-2?

So the D3X was released (I found out last night around 10pm Pacific time) but Nikon's trying to sell it at $8000. Apparently all the photographers and other professionals who need it are going to boycott the D3X until the price drops down to $6500 or something. If I ever did switch over to Nikon, the one camera I'd get is the D700 probably... I'm just waiting for my bloody 5D Mark II to get here

I was just talking with a coworker, he managed to find a 40D for 500 bucks, body only! (used, however). Still, a killer deal.
If there was ever a Canon that wanted me to jump the fence, it would be the 40D.

It'll be my first DSLR.
Do you think the XSi will be a good beginner DSLR?
I've always had a P&S camera with me ever since 2002 (I took it everywhere I went) and I'm really interested in getting a good, but relatively inexpensive DSLR and take the next step into photography as a hobby.
One thing that always prevents me from buying... I think I'll grow tired of carrying a bulky camera around everywhere I go. If I'm willing to spend close to $600, I want to be sure it won't be an expensive paper weight in a couple months.
Is everyone satisfied with their cameras?

I'm thinking about getting the XSi with the standard lense once it goes below $600.

I'm pretty happy with my camera.
But personally, if i could do it again, i'd probably purchase a used lower line DSLR, or a camera with room to grow.
i.e. I'd either go with a used XT or a used XTi, or go straight for the 40D, or 50D (if purchased at a good price).
Which for me, would either be the E-330, or an E-3 (pro-line olympus).
To me, it simply makes more sense to get a lower cost alternative if you're trying out a DSLR for the first time and you're not sure if you're really committed to photography. That way, you spend less $$ on a body, which means that if you have thoughts on upgrading your body, you'll have left over $$ to do so, as opposed to purchasing a more expensive entry level DSLR.
But if you're sure you're going to stick to photography, why waste the $$ for an entry level and want to purchase a pro-line body anyway? That's 600 bucks more you could have spent on glass or lighting.
Again, I'm speaking from the side of my mouth because i did the exact thing I'm telling you not to do, but again, given the choice to do it all over again, that's what I would do.
*edit*
speaking of which, somebody's selling the original digital rebel for $150, body only.
Worth it?

If you were to pick from those two Sonys, I would suggest the A200K. The 200K and 300K are very similar and the biggest difference is the Live Screen which the A200K doesn't have. The A200K is a little older but you can grow with it too and use the money saved instead to get some new lenses.

I've handled DSLRs before so I don't think I'm a complete beginner and I'm fairly certain I'll continue to take photos.
Well, I'm willing to spend $$ if it's worth the investment.
If the XSi is worth it, I'd like to have something new than a used, older model.
To be honest, I'm not sure if for me, the 40D or better would be a good investment, especially when it would be my first DSLR.
I think with the price range I'm thinking of (and I prefer Canon), my choices would be the XSi, XS, XT, and the XTi.
Among those, which would be the best bang for the buck? (quality vs price)

I've heard from others that even if you pre-ordered, delivery could be severly delayed as vendors are only getting so many units per shipment and they are filling the pre-orders on a first come first service. Anyone trying to get one now is going to have to wait months. I hope this isn't true.

I personally don't think that it's THAT much more difficult to use a 40D as compared to a XSi.
I've been told time and time again (even though i don't practice it), buy it once, and buy it right.
I just don't want you to be in a position about a month after having the XSi wishing you would have purchased a 40D or a 50D. If you spent enough time with your camera body, eventually you'll want to grow out of an entry level body. I'm already waiting for the E30...yum.
