^ wow... I couldn't imagine mounting a 1ds on a $20 tripod...haha. Which Gitzo did you get?

Oh no way me neither. I had that $20 tripod when I had my Kiss Digital X (XTi). Then I went without for a loooong time and saved up for the Gitzo. I got the Gitzo GT3541 6X and Markins M20 -- it's a beast!

Aww my 5000th post :I

I think its the best thing I've ever gotten lmao.
ahahaha.
Is there a difference between a D40 and a D40x?
I just have this feeling of I made a mistake and should of looked
around for a different brand and model.

Hi!
I need advice.
I'm planning on purchasing a DSLR in the near future.
I've narrowed it down to two,
But I'd like to know what accessories & lenses (and the price range of them, if possible) you would recommend for these cameras:

Nikon D40
Canon Rebel XSi

Is it better to get the XSi or the D40?
Like, does the difference in megapixels make a huge difference?

Sorry for so many questions, I'm somewhat of a noob with DSLRs x)
shop! :D

^ I don't think its an opinion. The xsi IS better than the D40 in every regards (except number of AF points I think, but Nikon destroys Canon in all their models when it comes to AF points). What turns me off the most about the D40 is its' limitations on which lenses you can use (some lenses are manual focus only). Then again the price reflects this fact. If you're comparing the D40 and xsi in terms of features and quality, xsi hands down. If you're concerned about cost and/or want to stick with Nikon over Canon, then obviously the D40. But if budget isn't an issue and you have any remote interest to pursue photography beyond just taking pics of your friends and family (basically an upgraded p&s), the xsi is a no brainer. If you really want to stick with Nikon, the better comparison is with the D90 (which costs more than the xsi) but in turn better than the xsi.

^Ahhhhhh that gave me a lot of info even though it wasn't for me. ahaha I was deciding about either
the REBEL XTi and the D40 but I ended up going with the D40 because of the money.
-___________-

The XSi was named the best DSLR camera in "Photography" the magazine.

Thanks!
I'm thinking of going for the XSi
And then investing in lenses in the future :]
I don't want the D40's lenses & limitations to be a set back for me, just in case =)

I want a new lens for my Nikon D40, but I need opinions. I'm going to get the 50mm prime lens, but I'm not sure whether I should opt for the 1.4 / 1.4D / 1.8 / 1.8D. Does the matrix metering make a big difference? & is the 50mm f/1.2 compatible with the D40? If so, is that a better choice? I'm looking for sharpness and a shallow depth of field (i.e. more bokeh), mainly for portraits / food photography. If there are any more appropriate lenses, let me know. Thanks 8)

I dont know if anyone can help me with my cuzin's problem but anyways, my cuzin has a Nikon D40 just a week ago and took some pictures in NYC and when he got home he connected it with a usb and his computer asked him to format the memory card even though he already formatted the card before taking pictures in the first place. Now hes really stummped because he doesnt wanna format the card and lose all his photos he took in NYC.

Also , is this prime lens ok ?
http://www.henrys.com/webapp/wcs/stores/se...mp;itemID=37134

its relatively cheap.

Recovermyfiles not free, but a scan of formatted files should be able to undelete the stuff off a "formatted" card. After you get all the pictures back, you probably want to do a full format on it and hope whatevers corrupted gets flagged so it won't occur again.

http://www.recuva.com/ Might work, but I think it will not be able to recover from corrupted media.

Yeah I heard that too , but im wondering if it would rather worth it to save up for a 50mm 1.4f USM .

Depends on if you like the focal length of 50mm. After using it, you might find that you would like something wider or maybe something longer. For it's price, I'd get it to introduce yourself to primes.

I have the 50mm 1.8, and now that I find myself using my 50 more and more, I'm considering selling it to a friend and buying the 1.4

Definitely the 1.4D/1.8D unless you don't use autofocus, because the other two lenses will not autofocus on your camera. Have you considered the Sigma 30mm f/1.4? I think the focal length will be easier to handle on the D40 than 50mm. Also you don't want a shallow depth of field when you take photographs of food because only a small part of the food will show and the rest will be blurred out -- it usually needs to be stopped down a little bit. Your kit lens should be fine for food photography imo.

^ 30mm is too close for portraits, and you get shallower DoF with 50 @ 1.8 than 30 @1.4. it would be helpful to look at boken samples from the sigma and the nikon lenses to see which has better bokeh, but the sigma was never one to really stand out for me personally.

for crops, i think 50mm is just fine for portraits and food photog. perhaps i might even suggest a macro lens and have that double up as a portrait lens, like the 60mm nikkor. it's not as fast as the 1.8, but it's probably sharper and will produce pictures with more contrast. the DoF difference will be relatively small as well, so it wont be as hard to produce bokeh. it is also a good thing to compare bokeh between the 50 and 60mm nikkors. 60mm is also a very decent portrait focal length.

I don't think I have asked this yet, but have any of you had issues with 8gb or larger cards where it slows down when its more than 75% full?

My 8gb CF got reallllllly slow when I had less than 100 shots left to the point where my normal click click (because the first one is always bad luck) would cause the camera to just lag and show Busy until it finished writing.

Really? I'd rather have 45mm than 75mm or 90mm but that may be just me.

^ for me 50 is good for full body portraits but for closer shots and food photography, I would much prefer 85-135. I used to try to use my 50 (effectively 85 at the time) to do portraits exclusively but ever since going full frame, the 70-200 has turned out to be a killer portrait lense. I've never had any camera/lense combination that covered the 85-135 range but now that I do, the 70-200 practically lives on my camera. smile.gif
