I currently own a Nikon D90 with an 18-200mm lens, and I love it; it's like an all-in-one lens, haha. ^^ However, the only thing I can complain about is the weight/bulkiness of the lens, and lately I've been thinking about getting a lighter lens just for those days when I'm just taking pictures of my friends and stuff... maybe a 50mm?
Would that be a good idea? Getting a lighter lens just for the sake of convenience? (And if so, what lens would you recommend?)
Or should I just get over the bulkiness of the 18-200mm? lol

Having your lens locked at 50 mm is a good idea if your unsure if you want to buy a new lens. you could also rent a 50 mm lens to see if its a lens you want. you could go to rentglass.com and rent it out for how ever long. when i started off my B&W photo class my teachers had us shot only in 50 mm because its whats closest to what our eyes see. if you want very intimate close up shots then i would definitely recommend a 50 mm, consider renting the lens its self as well to see if its the right lens for you.

For the people whom are interested in macro photography
just remember - before you even look at getting a macro lense - look into extension tubes which essentially allows any lens to be able to take macro shots, with very little draw backs while costing a fraction of the price (anywhere from $10~100). Thats not to say DONT get a macro lens, in fact i got a 60mm macro lens which i mount ontop of my extension tube for even better "zoom" which just works awesome.

50mm is closest to what our eyes sees on a standard 35mm camera. on a crop sensor like the nikon, the equivalent is about 33.3mm, which makes the 35mm the closest thing to 50mm on a full frame. the sigma 30/1.4 is a close 2nd if you want slightly wider, or the 28mm if you want to go wider still.

for closeups, i'd go 50 on a crop sensor. on a film camera or full frame, i'd choose to go 85mm.

yea, and you can get really decent tubes [kenko's] at good prices. if you have the money, attach a tele-converter for ever greater magnification. attaching a 2x TC can double your magnification! biggrin.gif

Do you have any advice on using extension tubes? I got cheapie ones and without the focus confirm chips or wires and manual focus is a bit beyond me.

so what's the difficulty? getting manual focus right? ext tubes cause really shallow DoF. just gotta keep at it and get more acquainted with manual focus. [or get new tubes tongue.gif]

^I can understand awdark's pain... Manual focusing with a Rebel viewfinder is definitely not my cup of tea.

What's wrong with your 5D? Is it too big or something?

Man, I remember in March I took a 5D + 16-35L with me to DISNEYLAND. ALL DAY. I was pretty much dead for the duration of the next day laugh.gif

How minimal? I agree -- I haven't gone out shooting much these days either, so I usually just grab my Leica D-Lux 4 and make random snapshots throughout the day. I want to play with my 5D Mark II, but I just don't have the time or the energy these days... Winter blues? blink.gif

^I know what you mean about going minimal. I bought the 18-55 kit lens with IS. Been carrying that around with me. You know how everyone keeps saying to get a prime to learn composition? I think have a zoom helps you learn about composition too. Too many times I've been relying on thin DOF to isolate the subject. Now with my cheap kit lens ($100 from adorama, btdubs) I've been learning composition with deep DOF framing things right, and paying attention to background.

Lately though been hauling around my tlr with a lightmeter I just got. Thing weighs alot. Hopefully my shots look nice.

Also, I've been looking around for a really good p&s. Anyone have any experiences with Ricoh?

^A really good P&S? I'm very happy with my Leica D-Lux 4. Canon PowerShots are generally good too. I heard good things about Ricoh but I've never used one before.

First time taking night photos -- c&c appreciated thanks smile.gif

WOW. That looks amazing! I've always wanted to go to SF at night and just do night photography of the bridge and city lights.

Depends what you want man, do you want to do wide angle shots, tele photo zoom, macro etc.?
General rule of thumb, if your happy with the quality of your 18-55mm lens grab yourself the "55-200mm vr" to complent it. The 55-200mm performance is extroadinary in relation to its cost, simply one of the biggest bargain in nikon lens atm. Distortion is relatively low, including Colour fringing - yet images are very sharp and contrasty. If you can afford it and like convenience of having a single multipurpose lens grab the 18-200mm vr lens - but these cost ALOT, like 3 times more than if you get the 55-200mm vr lens (well in AU dollars anyway).
If you decide to want a better quality "kit" go for the 18-70mm vr and 70-300mm vr lens kit. These kits are generally 2x more expensive than the 18-55+55-200, but provide better optical quality performance as well as build quality (metal framing etc.)

Also, as a nikon owner you need to do yourself a favour and eventually pick up the nikkor 50mm 1.8D AF. professional grade lens (in terms of being super fast, high glass quality and razor sharp) at an extremely low cost - anywhere from 50~100 ($USD). Reason why its so cheap is that its a prime lens, and that you wont be able to zoom (which means you gotta move if you want the zoom). The 50mm 1.4 is slightly even better but cost quite abit more - i would consider the 1.8 first. However since you got the d40, note that the 50mm 1.8 lens wont auto focus, so you gonna have to learn to play manual with this one, though trust me you'll grow better at photography while learning how to do stuff manually.

In terms of macro, As i mention on the other page, you can even turn that sweet 50mm 1.8D into a macro lens if you look into buying extension tubes (which are super cheap). But in terms of lens i would recommend the 60mm 2.8D/G ED depending on your budget. and if you want an even closer macro magnification (2:1,3:1,4:1 etc.) chuck that specific macro prime lens on an extension tube!

On another note - any D90 owners here? havent seen any post yet - just recently sold my d80 and upgraded to the d90. Jesus i love this camera, image quality is just as good as the d300 sans the 14bit RAW processing compared to the d90's 12bit. The low light shooting capability (low noise/grain control) on this body is simply amazing and works very well in places such as concerts/clubs etc (and this is without attaching the amazing 50mm 1.8/1.4 prime lens). For anyone thats is on the bench or looking to buy a "prosumer"/mid-tier level camera that you can grow into (lens compatability), I highly recommend this camera.
