I've had both but I sold the 1.8 to a friend. The f/1.8 does feel really cheap and plasticky compared to the f/1.4, but I've gotten some great photos out of that lens. It's really light and easy to take around... The f/1.4 is small and light too though. I used it for about half a year? Nothing broke. I've never really heard of anyone breaking their f/1.8 but I imagine one drop will do the trick.

Oh yeah, you should PP (post-production) ur pictures. Also, I'd suggest saving your pics as RAW files (that is, if you intend on doing PP). I always thought PP took away the meaning of photography, but honestly, photography is art and you're not trying to capture exactly what you see. Photoshop works wonders.

I'm not a huge fan of Ken Rockwell, but I agree with this one quote of his most: "People know buying a piano won't make them pianists, so why do people buy cameras and think that great results just happen?"
piano's don't have an auto mode
someday, the dslr makers are going to add more modes to make it even easier for photographers. 'isolate' modes that lower aperture for more bokeh, 'motion capture' for long exposures like for passing cars, portrait composition assistance, etc.
i think with today's technology, noobies can very quickly take pictures on the level of intermediate users.

I just asked my dad to get me a good camera, and he got me the newest one. I looked at the camera stuff of one of the people on the thread, and she has more expensive stuff than me.
I'd like to maybe become really good and become a professional, but she said she doesn't even want to do that.
Anyways, I just got the Canon 16-35 f/2.8
It should get here soon, and I can't wait to use it. Now I can fit alot more of my room in the picture. I might ask my friends if they can model for me sometime so I can get better.
Can anyone recommend a smaller camera I can get when I don't want to bring the bigger one around sometimes?

Sorry to say this, but I honestly cannot fathom a 15-year-old kid with a Mac Pro, MacBook Pro, 5D Mark II, 24-105L, 24-70L, 16-35L, and 70-200L, so if you could prove it with some photos (i.e. all that stuff + a sign with your soompi name), that'd be cool. Please by all means, prove me wrong
And are you referring to me as the person with "more expensive stuff" than you who "doesn't even want to" become a professional?

smaller camera has the 1.6x crop. the same lenses wont give you the same field of view. you should try one out before you buy, but since you're on the canon boat, the xsi should be your top choice if you do get one.
minji, what's wrong with a 15 year old photography newbie with a set of L's and the 5D II?

You're a newbie who trying to learn by using an advanced equipment without prior experience (I might be wrong there).
w/e, your choice

I didn't say that it was wrong -- I was just in disbelief

Do you have a job and bought your camera? I bet your dad bought your stuff too. You post your own picture of your things first. "
I'm thinking of joining a photography club in my school. That's why I wanted to get a really good camera that can change the settings and things like that.
This forum is pretty hostile towards new people.

Agreed. I think if you wanna become a professional, that's an even better reason for you to start from the beginning and learn from the basics, not jump all the way to first class, 2 grand+ DSLR and L lenses to begin what you call an interest. I'm a sophomore too, but I highly doubt you'll become a professional photographer for sure after all those years of high school, college, along with the worldwide economic crisis right now.

It's just most people start out simple. With a P&S or a d40 or something cheap. It kinda sounds like you got interested in photography on a whim, but if it's a just-blossoming hobby you might not be into it in a few months which kinda means the investment was pointless.
Hey can I hang out here? There's no real dedicated photography thread around (and I don't have my dslr yet).

i dont see why most people are acting this way. for whatever reason, they dont like the idea that such a young newcomer has acces to pro gear. dont mind them. just post. there are friendlies here too =)

Yes, my dad helped me get a lot of my gear. I remember when he bought me my first Canon DSLR which was a Rebel XTi. I bought the Leica gear with my own money though and yes, I do have a job -- thanks for caring
It's just a lot of things make it a little hard to believe -- couldn't you just clear all this up with one little photo? You're a sophomore in high school who's THINKING of joining a photography club and you get your dad to buy you ~$8k worth of photography equipment all at once? (Not to mention that your post count is 5.) Either you're lying or you're telling the truth and reacting strangely (and your dad is filthy rich
If you think I'm lying about my stuff, you can look at the EXIF info of photos I post on this thread -- plus in the previous page, you can actually see my camera.
And I was not being hostile but if you think that me asking for one picture is being hostile, okay then I'm hostile >: D
Lastly, I agree with watcher that you should get an XSi for a lighter camera. Or you could get the G10 like downe says. Or you can get both since apparently money is not an issue for you

Whoa you bought that? I thought you got it for your birthday. Don't you value it even more when you know you worked hard to buy something like that.

Yeah it was a nice little present for myself
And there's tons of noise in that picture because it's ISO 2500 -- Leica M8.2's noise is pretty crazy but I like it in black and white. I was shooting at S mode for fun, and it chose ISO 2500.
