Okay!
I think I'm upgrading! Need (Nikon) enthusiasts' opinions!
I got the D40 w/ kit lens (18-55mm) about a year ago. Unfortunately, my sister took it to Japan with her since December and she's staying there for the next 2 years, so I'm not gonna be using it any time soon. Therefore, I'm thinking of getting a new one (it's not really upgrading actually

). I decided that I want the D80, but isn't it discontinued cuz the D90 replaced it?!?! Henry's is selling bnip body for $720, while open box/used on eBay are a bit cheaper (prob by $100$150). As for lens, I'd love to get the 18-200mm VR since I don't think I'm too into experimenting with lenses right now. But that's like.. $700+ for a new one

! *sigh* I'm so sad

I don't have the money to afford the D90 body, so don't even mention a lens. I don't really care for the movie function nor the higher ISO. Does it matter that much when the camera is a bit "old"? Should I go ahead and get the old D80 or wait for some price drop for the D90?!
Hey Candy, i actually sold my d80 to get the d90 awhile back. Now first off, the d80 is a great camera, and you'll find its lens compatibility a huge plus when you start upgrading into more exotic lens (the prime 50mm 1.8 or 50mm 1.4 lens for example wont auto focus and meter on the d40/60, but will on the d80+). If your unable to afford the d90, get the d80 instead of replacing it with another d40/60. The d80 is like 600~650 now on Amazon and cheaper on ebay (ive seen $550 including shipping for body brand new). It hasnt been officially discountinued yet, so they are still widely available.
Personally i find the d90 to be quite an upgrade to the d80. Ignoring the video feature, the d90 has most of the features found within the d300. The image quality is touted as being on par (and in some test case surpasses) the d300. The noise handling on this camera is simply amazing (its pretty much the same sensor as the d300), you get excellent images from 100~1600 and very usable pictures at
3200 ISO - without it looking like a total grainy mess!. Combined with the in-camera vignetting and chromatic aberration correction, the d90 has more than enough features to justify its price to me. The only difference between the d90 and d300 really is the body size, weather sealing from its magnesium body, much more sophisticated auto focus system (51 points vs 11), better metering and faster shooting (6~8fps vs 4.5).
As for lens... The 18-200mm vr lens is certainly a great portable "do-almost-everything" lens, but really the quality isn't anything special. The 55-200mm vr lens is a fraction of the cost and perform equally if not better in optical quality (several reviews have mentioned this). If you need a zoom lens on a budget, ill recommend the 55-200mm or better yet the 70-300mm vr lens which is still cheaper than the 18-200mm but better in everyway sans convenience of having one lens).
If you havent already got a 50 or 85mm prime lens (meaning they cant zoom), i would highly recommend them to start off with (on top of the 55-200mm or 70-300mm if can afford it). These are
professional graded quality that sell for dirt cheap. the 50mm 1.8 for example sell for $50~100ish... you chuck that on any nikon camera, and you'll see the image quality it produces will substantially kick the crap out of any of the bundled kit lens that comes with the camera (18-55mm, 18-200mm, 55-200mm, 18-105mm etc. etc.). This is ESPECIALLY true in low light (or when using flash is just unacceptable). Take a look.
010203They are the some of sharpest lens Nikon produces, and are a great start when upgrading your lens (especially if your on a limited budget).
