Thank you laugh.gif
I used my Leica M8.2 to take that picture, but it can be taken with pretty much any camera, even point and shoots, as long as you have a sturdy tripod.
And yeah I was scared poopless -- my dad said I was foolish and I think I was -- not doing that again without a friend sleep.gif
Nikon D40 is a good camera but manual focusing with it would be a pain in the butt since the viewfinder is very tiny.
If manual focus is what you want, you might want to look at manual film cameras, like Nikon FM2 -- manual film cameras sell for very cheap prices used on eBay.

Hehe thank you smile.gif
Dude your project looks awesome -- could you explain it more to me? smile.gif
Thinking of castration reminds me of Slumdog Millionaire, when they were doing stuff to the kids to make them "more profitable" as beggars.

I actually have a manual camera, but i want a digital manual camera, cause film and developing is expensive. lol

so whats a good digital camera, im looking at nikons. and theyr so purty <3

Okay!
I think I'm upgrading! Need (Nikon) enthusiasts' opinions!

I got the D40 w/ kit lens (18-55mm) about a year ago. Unfortunately, my sister took it to Japan with her since December and she's staying there for the next 2 years, so I'm not gonna be using it any time soon. Therefore, I'm thinking of getting a new one (it's not really upgrading actually laugh.gif ). I decided that I want the D80, but isn't it discontinued cuz the D90 replaced it?!?! Henry's is selling bnip body for $720, while open box/used on eBay are a bit cheaper (prob by $100$150). As for lens, I'd love to get the 18-200mm VR (probably the Sigma one) or the 18-135mm since I don't think I'm too into experimenting with lenses right now. But that's like.. $700+ for a new one sad.gif! *sigh* I'm so sad sad.gif I don't have the money to afford the D90 body, so don't even mention a lens. I don't really care for the movie function nor the higher ISO. Does it matter that much when the camera is a bit "old"? Should I go ahead and get the old D80 or wait for some price drop for the D90?!

Hey Candy, i actually sold my d80 to get the d90 awhile back. Now first off, the d80 is a great camera, and you'll find its lens compatibility a huge plus when you start upgrading into more exotic lens (the prime 50mm 1.8 or 50mm 1.4 lens for example wont auto focus and meter on the d40/60, but will on the d80+). If your unable to afford the d90, get the d80 instead of replacing it with another d40/60. The d80 is like 600~650 now on Amazon and cheaper on ebay (ive seen $550 including shipping for body brand new). It hasnt been officially discountinued yet, so they are still widely available.

Personally i find the d90 to be quite an upgrade to the d80. Ignoring the video feature, the d90 has most of the features found within the d300. The image quality is touted as being on par (and in some test case surpasses) the d300. The noise handling on this camera is simply amazing (its pretty much the same sensor as the d300), you get excellent images from 100~1600 and very usable pictures at 3200 ISO - without it looking like a total grainy mess!. Combined with the in-camera vignetting and chromatic aberration correction, the d90 has more than enough features to justify its price to me. The only difference between the d90 and d300 really is the body size, weather sealing from its magnesium body, much more sophisticated auto focus system (51 points vs 11), better metering and faster shooting (6~8fps vs 4.5).

As for lens... The 18-200mm vr lens is certainly a great portable "do-almost-everything" lens, but really the quality isn't anything special. The 55-200mm vr lens is a fraction of the cost and perform equally if not better in optical quality (several reviews have mentioned this). If you need a zoom lens on a budget, ill recommend the 55-200mm or better yet the 70-300mm vr lens which is still cheaper than the 18-200mm but better in everyway sans convenience of having one lens).

If you havent already got a 50 or 85mm prime lens (meaning they cant zoom), i would highly recommend them to start off with (on top of the 55-200mm or 70-300mm if can afford it). These are professional graded quality that sell for dirt cheap. the 50mm 1.8 for example sell for $50~100ish... you chuck that on any nikon camera, and you'll see the image quality it produces will substantially kick the crap out of any of the bundled kit lens that comes with the camera (18-55mm, 18-200mm, 55-200mm, 18-105mm etc. etc.). This is ESPECIALLY true in low light (or when using flash is just unacceptable). Take a look.

They are the some of sharpest lens Nikon produces, and are a great start when upgrading your lens (especially if your on a limited budget).

Hi, after working backwards all the way to page 125,
I figured I'd put in a post too....

I'm another "I want to get into DSLR.. I'm a beginner.. give me advice please" person :x haha

I've been intensively looking at the Nikon D40, only because of my (very) limited budget, and it seems quite decent for a beginner. I've been seeing a lot of deals here and there (adorama, ritz camera, staples, etc.) and I'm becoming pretty antsy about finally buying one and using it!

But during my "research," I saw somewhere that prices for these cameras tend to drop around late March/early April(because the PMA's are in early March or something) ... So I was wondering if I should practice patience, and hold off for a good month or just buy it, and if prices happen to drop regret that I was an impatient fool, haha. I would love to have it and practice with it for a bit before it becomes my birthday (April 1st.. and it's being half-covered as a birthday present from my parents, lol) ... ahh, decisions.

Also, I've found a deal on Adorama that bundles the D40 with two lenses (18-55mm and 55-200mm) for about $50 more than if I were to buy a kit with just the 18-55mm lens ... Do you think it's worth buying it with that second lens, or just stick with the kit lens to familiarize myself?

Sorry for making this super long! Thanks.

(p.s. is buydig.com a reliable site..?)

Yeah i say wait... theres a rumor going around that a new entry level model being introduced real soon. Otherwise if your really keen at the d40 bundle - and were talking about th 55-200mm VR lens here, i say go for it. It a very nice kit lens for its price, and a huge bargin if you can get it for $50 more... certainly much better than the 18-55mm lens imo

Ahh, it actually isn't the 55-200 mm VR lens, it's.. some other one. So I guess not.. I suspected it was a little too good, haha. Thanks for the heads up! But now you have me looking at those lenses everywhere!! Heheh smile.gif

Let's say I'm really close between these:
http://www.buydig.com/shop/product.aspx?sku=NKD401855
(actually $409.88 in cart ohmy.gif! too good again?)
http://www.adorama.com/INKD40K3.html
(the accessories tempt me, haha)
http://www.17photo.com/product.asp?id=25420

Are these... good deals? And would the wait bring the price down by a lot? Let's say, at least $50? Lot's of questions again, sorry -__-.

imo the D70/D70s is a way better starter camera than the D40. you're not limited to AF-S lenses, the top LCD is incredibly convenient, and other little functions like exposure bracketing make it a much more complete camera than the D40. :\

Does anyone know a moderately decent wide angle lens with a relatively cheap price that works well in low light for the Nikon D80?

Is there anything specifically wrong with the Nikon D60? I'm looking at getting one in the next couple of days, besides getting a VR lens should I look at getting anything else beyond the standard 2 lens that come with it?

oh, and if you don't mind me asking,
what's the difference between a 50mm f/1.8 and a 50mm f/1.4 ?

I think I've set my mind on the Nikon D40 with the kit lens (18-55mm) and buying an extra lens (50mm f/1.8) on the side. I know the 50mm f/1.8 doesn't autofocus on the D40, but I figured I'd need to figure out how to use manual anyway, if I bought this camera, haha, so it's my little extra-splurge x; .

And I only decided on the D40 because, personally, I don't think I need as many megapixels as all the other cameras have.. 6.1 is good enough for me as a starter (; Anddd the price range fits just right, if not already slightly over-budget (Yeah.. I'm a non-working college student. This is a big step for me haha!)

Thank you! smile.gif

Besides being 2/3 stop faster than the 1.8, I think the only difference is better build quality on the F1.4 and a brighter viewfinder with the F1.4 lens which makes it better to autofocus/manual focus in low-light. Bokeh is preference, I don't know if there's a significant improvement or not.

Oooh, D40. I had that but I wanted the 50mm prime lens and I knew it couldn't autofocus with it so I upgraded to the D80. The D40 was awesome though for its price and what it could do.
