crappy cellphone pictures

It was actually really small-- when I first saw it I had no clue what kind of camera it was-- I thought it was an obscure, random camera that my t.a shot with. He ended up connecting it to a macbook and taking pictures through the computer so we could see them directly on the screen, and the shots weren't thought out or anything, but the quality was jaw-dropping.

i never realized how common SLR cameras are until I was shopping on this one street in boston. I saw 5 or 6 people with them hanging off their neck. I wonder out of how many I saw actually knows how to use their cameras (in manual mode).

I'm an amateur photographer and my camera is the canon 450D/xsi with the 18-55 IS lens. I'm thinking of buying a zoom lens since the range of the 18-55 couldn't reach far. Any suggestions of good but cheap zoom lens? like for a budget of $300?

So I have been wondering for a long time if I should get a compact camera that I can take with me wherever I go, I usually don't bring the slr with me all the time because it is too big, and thats when I usually see so many great photo opportunities, and I kick myself for not bringing it with me. So I was thinking about purchasing either Panasonic DMC-LX3K or Canon Powershot G10, does anybody have any recommendations for cameras like these or others?

^I saw the set on your flickr. Great set! She's a cutie too!

Did you do any directing or did you just let her do her thing while you shot away?

Dang, may I ask what you do for living ? How do you manage to use all of them ? ohmy.gif *my jaw is dropped on the floor*. I have difficulty finding time to play with my one camera already.

And a little contribute to the topic. Recently, and accidentally I shot this and personally I like it. smile.gif Please be nice to me. I'm totally an amateur, I haven't been shooting frequently since I bought a DSLR

Two days ago i purchased a 24mm f1.4L lens on impulse...i was gonna re-sell it when i thought to myself, "lets put the lens on the 40D with a crop sensor bringing it to a 38mm lens effectively, this also eliminates the vignetting and soft corners", is this a good idea? or should i just resell the lens. Am gonna get a 5D MarkII in a few hrs, its gonna be coupled with my 24-70mm f2.8L lens. so i'm gonna have:

40D + 24mm f1.4L / 70-200mm f2.8L IS
5D markII + 24-70mm f2.8L

Is this a good dual body combo?

Minus the 24mm, thats exactly what I have. The combo has been working out excellently for me. I'm a lot more in to portraits so instead of the 24mm, I'm saving up for the 85mm 1.2L. Almost there. It would make a smokin portrait lense on either the 40D or 5Dii. Only think I wish I had on the 40D compared to 50D is the better LCD, but definitely not reason enough to upgrade now. I'll probably upgrade the 40D to the next model after. Ideally, I want a 2nd 5Dii also but thats like way later (maybe end of year).

I decided I would only upgrade to a FF or 1D markII or III, or serious glass like the 85L only if I make extra disposible income directly from photography.

I was close to making some money from my sunrise reflection off the Bean picture, but the postcard company was only going to pay $100~ for it. To give up copyright and ownership of the picture just wasn't worth it.
I at least thought they would pay around $500 and hopefully $1K for a good photo for their postcards.
Did a bit of researching and found out that the best way is to sell photos to calendar companies. I thought about a Chicago themed calendar spread that I could sell in the future. Problem is that I need at least 11 more photos now. tongue.gif

Anyway... does anybody use battery grips for their bodies? I was seriously thinking about getting the BG-E2N for my 40D, but I decided that I was just throwing money at a non-issue because it doesn't make the image quality or final product better.

Gotta stop spending money, but it's so tempting!

^ I don't find battery grips necessary unless you take ALOT of portraits in the vertical orientation. As far as the extra battery life and what not, not worth it. Single battery lasts me more than long enough and swapping batteries is no big deal to me. Also the grip + body feels nothing like the unibody/grip on the 1d, so doesn't matter much there either.

I have the grip for the 5dii but not my 40D.

I can't believe that you are the same guy that was debating getting a XSi or a 40D.
And here we are months later and you're going for a FF camera!

Oh gosh, I hope I'm not going FF soon! I can't justify buying high $ equipment if it's just a hobby of mine.
I have all I need for now. a wide angle/general walk around (Tamron 17-50), prime lens for portrait/lowlight/shallow DoF (Sigma 50 1.4), telephoto zoom (70-200 F4L), 430ex speedlite. It's going to be extremely hard to convince myself that my equipment right now is restricting to what I want to shoot.
From now, the only way I'd upgrade from my current set up is it I can make money from my photos. No more spending my disposible income (gotta keep saving up for a house!)

I'm really getting my technical skills down. I feel like my skills have increased leaps and bounds in the few months I've had my camera. Two things I realized that were the MOST important for me was: understanding the exposure triangle, and proper hand-holding techniques. The last is an INVALUABLE skill, especially in low light without a tripod. If I find the link where it illustrated various effective stances, I'll post it on here. Helped my images 10 fold.
It's actually liberating to start taking photos close to what I imagined in my head!

Woah.. So rich.. T^T tears.gif

Anyway, what do you guys think of a Canon 40d? I'm planning to buy a Canon 40d or a Rebel Xsi.. Even though a 40d is old, a person I know still takes great shots..

I have the 40D and it's wonderful.
I tried to XSi and it's a bit too small for my taste.

The 40D isn't really THAT old. There's a 50D out right now, but many people haven't switched over from the 40D to the 50D because many say that the image quality (especially noise control) is better on the 40D. One thing I prefer over the 40D is the ability to microadjust on the 50D... but I can live without it ^^

I say this everytime, but go to an electronics store and hold them both in your hands. Play with the buttons, take some test shots, and mess around with the menu. One will feel a lot more comfortable in your hands.
