Yay 3500th reply!

Has anyone been keeping up with Ken Rockwell's site (www.kenrockwell.com)? I have been for a while because a close friend recommended it but these days I'm getting kind of annoyed at how he always talks about how great film is and trash talks anyone that uses digital. I mean, I know film is better but he's so condescending sleep.gif

Here are photos I took recently:

I hate physics but at least I got a good picture out of it? We were studying the reflection and refraction of light.

After the physics lab, I went to the Cove in Downtown La Jolla:

All taken with Leica M8.2 + Leica Summilux-M 50mm f/1.4 ASPH 6-Bit. My 5D Mark II needs attention and love tears.gif

pcemker, does your dad still have his camera equipment? If he does, it may be possible to use his lenses on your future DSLR. If he has Canon equipment and they are EOS models, they have EF mounts and you'll be able to use his lenses. I'm not sure, but I think you should be able to use almost all past nikon lenses on Nikon camera bodies. That may help you determine what brand want. Also, what are you planning to take photo of with your DSLR? Not everyone needs more frames per second. The only times I use it is when I'm messing around on the golf course taking frame by frame shots of my buddies swinging. If you expect to take portraits of people that don't move around much, there really is no need for the higher FPS. Take a few minutes and determine what you plan to use your DSLR for. It will help you make a good decision.
There's comparisons between the 50D and T1i and it shows that the T1i has better noise control and some other things, but if it were me, I would get the 50D because the camera body is bigger and feels better in my hands.

Thanks for the advice [HyuNi], I will definitely take it into consideration.

I do believe my dad still has all his gear, its most likely stored away in the basement. I know he used to work with nikon and that he has a good amount of lenses somewhere, so I'm going to take a look at the D90 as well (although I'm really liking the 50D). I'll probably be using the DSLR for a variety of things though, random events, car shows, motorsports, and I'd like to learn how to take portraiture as well. In addition, I'd also like to try something fun and take the time to learn how to create stop-motion light art/graffiti. Seeing as I've been a fan of the PikaPika projects/videos (if you dont know what I'm talking about, take a look here: PikaPika project light graffiti (youtube)).

Thanks once again,

-pcemker

Looking at getting my first DSLR currently between a Sony and a Canon - i've used the Rebel series and liked it a lot. I heard the new XT is not really worth the extra money though..recommendations (specific models+packages) or whatever for a newbie would be great! Thanks in advance!

I think you'd have a better chance requesting for a photography pass.
I'm not sure how you go about getting one, but according to some things I read on POTN, they shouldn't be hard to get.
Don't know about Hollywood bowl though tongue.gif

LOL Cameras are totally allowed! Where are you sitting from? Terrance box and beyond are all kind of far away hahhaa~ And a pass for hollywood bowl...GOOD LUCK on that! They only give them to like...Korean Times employees or large newspapers/news stations.

Anyone who is a girl photographer with a camera larger than the Canon Rebel series....how hard is it to hold the larger cameras for extended periods of time? I tried some out in the store and my hands cramped up after like...5 minutes sleep.gif Is it something you get used to? I WANT TO UPGRADE BUT THEY'RE TOO HEAVY/BIG HUUUUU

erure, your photos are amazing! did you use photoshop in anyway?

I'm looking into buying a camera, but can't afford an dslr. So I've leaning towards a Sony DSC-H50, which I found one for US$330. Comments? Or should I get a P&S, which is easier to carry around?

Thank you smile.gif Yes I did use photoshop but I just tweak RAW settings and that's about it.

As for the camera, it really depends on your budget. I'd rather recommend a Canon PowerShot G9 (used) than Sony DSC-H50. Or maybe you can save up for a Nikon D40 (it's around $450 new).

@ zgnoud Yes, I know that the autofocus would work on D40 if the lens are the AF-I and AF-S. But I don't think if I were to get the D40, I would get those lens right away.
Anyways, I'll definitely consider the D80 then.

Thanks for your replies guys!

And erure, those pictures are amazing!

It's actually impressive if she can use it, since it's manual focus -- I can't ask someone to take a photo of me with my M8.2 because they don't know how to use it and explaining how to use it takes too long sad.gif

The Rebel XT is actually one of the older Rebels. The new T1i just came out last month, which is probably what you're talking about.
The decision on your first DSLR depends on three very important factors:
1) What's your budget? (Give us a range, don't say 'something that's affordable')
2) How serious do you feel like you will get with photography? (flavor or the month hobby, or potential LT hobby)
3) What kind of photos do you plan on taking and how much experienced have you had with DSLR before?

haha that's kinda cute tongue.gif
Anyways, I'm not a girl and I don't think my 40D is heavy, but I do use this:
Opteka Wrist Grip Strap
It takes a few days to get used to, but I can't imagine using my camera without it anymore.
I keep it strapped to my hand when I'm out shooting and when I'm not using the camera, I let the camera rest gently onto the strap. That way, I don't have to grip the body when it's not in use, or put it back in the bag, which is not only a big hassle, but I could miss an opportunity to take a photo of something.
For about $10~, using this grip could help you upgrade!

By the way, Canon started their instant rebates -- it lasts until July. They're doing rebates on some prime lenses too! smile.gif
