i know there's been a lot of annoyance over questions of canon vs. nikon, but i'm gonna ask anyway.
canon rebel xs or nikon d60 ?
i'm leaning towards the canon one, but i don't know if i'd regret not having the nikon's D-Lighting feature, spot metering and in camera image editing .
opinions ? ._.

nikon lenses are a lot more expensive than canon. just something to consider. for example, canon's 70-200mm f/2.8 is 1600$ while nikon's is 1900$. of course, the extra money you pay for getting a nikon lens definitely makes it worth it.

I have the chance to get a nikon d40 with kitlens for 249€(340$) NEW!

Shall I go for it?

The e-420 is available for about 300€.

I don't need liveview and I have glasses.

I read pretty much about these two Dslr's.

How hard is autofocussing on the d40 with, lets say, a f1.8 50mm? How are the results?

you can't autofocus the 50mm f/1.8 lens on the d40 because the lens itself doesnt have a focus motor. on higher up nikon cameras you can however. autofocusing is not hard anyways. you just hold down the button and it'll autofocus. question is whether you want what the lens focuses on to be focused. i have a d60 with the 50mm so i too cant autofocus with it. but i dont find that a problem at all since i dont mind manually focusing anyways. everyone likes the 50mm and several claim it to be one of the sharpest lenses and fastest autofocusing.

CANON 450D

CANON 1000D

hmms.. the strange thing is that the CANON 1000D is cheaper than the 450D :/

any reviews guys? :/ it'd be really really appreciated.

Afirmation: I believe that advice is the thing you ask when you know the answer, but wish you didn't.

Here's a side-by-side comparison of the two cameras you listed and the 400D. There really isn't a big difference between the two cameras other than MP, AF, and FPS, but I'll let the more experienced Canon crowd enlighten you on the more user defined differences. If you have specific Canon related questions you might want to look on Canon Digital Photography Forum, the people who frequent that forum know the cameras inside and out and can answer almost any question you might have.

With that being said out of the two cameras listed I would suggest the 450D since there appears to be more people on this forum and on the one I recommended have that specific camera and can give you more guidance on its functionality and features.

Its not really that strange, Canon's DSLR become progressively more advanced (read:expensive) as the model number is lowered. With the Canon 1D being the flagship top of the line professional model -> 1000D the most basic canon DSLR available. If you got the extra cash, i say jump on the d450/500. But then again im a nikon user, so ill leave it to the canon owners

^So anyone want to make a new thread on "which dslr should I buy" to answer canon vs nikon... and which is better the t1i vs the D90 vs... XTI vs D40/60... that we see so often?

Yeah, lets do it. Or at least have a link to a webpage that discusses it.
I thin this thread has exploded since DSLRs have become so popular!
How about we start a sub forum? biggrin.gif
One strictly with just gear, another with photos, and another with troubleshooting, and one for beginners or potential buyers...
I think it would be perfect because this thread is so big now and people ask the same questions because they can't find it or don't want to sift through 178 pages to find their answer.

Not sure what Nikon's D-Lighting feature is, but Canon has spot metering (albiet not very good as with other in body metering) and in camera image editing... is probably the most useless thing. Why would you want to edit something in the camera when you can do it better and faster on the computer?
It's really your choice on what you want to get. Go to a local store and hold both in your hands and play around with it. You'll feel which one you like better. But be warned, the D60 doesn't have an in camera focusing motor so some lenses will not autofocus on that body.

As a Nikon owner I can tell you that the D-Lighting feature should not be seen nas a selling factor when choosing between canon+nikon. D-lighting only works when shooting Jpeg... and if you are shooting RAW... well you got even MORE freedom to edit/fix your photos; much more than the D-lighting. I agree, the inbuilt camera editing is pretty useless unless you dont have some kind of editor program on your computer. I also agree that the best way to choose between Nikon/Canon is to have a feel of both camera in your hand. It'll give you a sense of how comfortable the camera will be; in terms of weight, egonomics and user interface.

thank you. sigma 70-200 f/2.8

Nice,
That lens is avaliable for the 4/3rds system. I figure it would be a great alternative to the zuiko 50-200 f/2.8-3.5 (which costs 20%-30% more). Is the Quality Control as bad as they say it is?
It looks like a great concert/sports lens (2x crop factor comes in handy at times).
Now if only sigma would finally make the 50mm f/1.4 for the 4/3rds like they promised.

I'm assuming you weren't shooting wide open.
What f-stop were you using and what was your ISO speed?

my copy is pretty sharp, but the nikon alternative is definitely better. almost all my shots were wide-open, rarely over ISO400 at a minimum 1/200 shutter-speed.

erure, Goombi, and omegach, your photos are beautiful!

Okay, I have a few things I want to ask. I'm extremely sorry if I ask anything stupid or something that's been answered tons of times.

I've been interested in photography for awhile, but I haven't had enough motivation to research into it. Because of that, I don't want to spend a large amount of money to buy a new camera or anything in the near future. My dad (who knows nothing about photography) has a Nikon D70 that I've been playing around with, but seeing how it doesn't seem to be popular at all, I'm sure there's some negatives to it. I'm not even sure how long my dad's had it. The camera, I'm pretty sure, has the standard kit lens (whatever that is; I forgot to check the exacts >_<), and my dad also has a Tamron 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 Macro Lens. What could I do with that?
Could anyone help me out with telling me some things about this camera, its limits and how much I can do with it?
(sorry if it seems like I'm too lazy to do my own research >_< I guess I kind of am, but I'd like to hear you soompiers' inputs)

Also... I'm somewhat overwhelmed by all of the features and technical things. If it's not too much, could anyone suggest some nice websites/books/anything for beginners? And important terms/features I should read up on. I took some pictures that I'm actually kind of happy with, but they're pretty much taken on auto ^^;

Thank you! :3

Oh yeah, I was tired or something. I meant how hard is manual focussing with a f1.8. Would you rather get a f1.8 35mm with autofocus or a f1.8 50mm without? If manual focus doesn't take much longer, I don't mind. The only thing I worry about is if autofocus gets better results than manual focus.

The power of using a F2.8 Aperature Lens haha. A cheap 50mm/80mm 1.4 or 1.8 could do the same too (if you have those lens). High ISO too (especially on a D700/D3) - Oh god omegach i sure am lusting over it sad.gif wicked set of pictures btw biggrin.gif
