Just got a D40 for my birthday! I'm so happy. tongue.gif
I decided to also start a 365 project today for kicks~ If anyone else has a flickr, add me? (:

Haha. I'm just shamelessly advertising myself ._.

Anywaaaaay, here's a picture I took for day 1. I took this on manual. dSLRs are harder to use than I thought it'd be but I love it so far.
biggrin.gif I hope to really progress haha.

'Ello~I'm just getting into photography (well..the taking the pics part) & I am a total noob when it comes to cameras. What exactly is a Dslr? I know they are Cameras but what makes them different from others (like details). And could can anyone recommend a good camera to start with. Right now I use my mom's Fujifilm FinePix s5700/s700 (7mp). Is that a good camera? Cause', yeah, I know nothing about photography.

and I dunno if this is the place to ask but in some pictures I see an object, like a flower for instance, and then everything in the back of it is sort of blurred. (example http://www.flickr.com/photos/aschultz/3403554968/) Is that an effect with the camera? Or photoshop? & with some pictures they have those colorful dots in the background. How is that done too? (example- http://www.flickr.com/photos/abenedetti/3428399113/ )

Hmm.. a random question to hear some opinions. No, it's not another Nikon vs Canon question. It isn't a DSLR question either, but I figured this is the best place to put it.

The question is ... Leica VS Ricoh

I guess it's more of a Leica D-LUX vs the Ricoh GRD. Obviously there's one major difference between the two, one can zoom and the other can't, but who doesn't like getting up close to their shooting objects?

I think Ricoh is better value but I like Leica more. If you can afford the Leica, go for the Leica lol. The lens on the D-Lux 4 is crazy -- usually point and shoot cameras don't have lenses like that... f/2.0-2.8

Wow. After two years of saving up and contemplating on which DSLR I should buy..
I finally bought the Nikon D5000 today! <3

I'm so happy but I wanted to buy a D60 since I'm a beginner...however, most of the stores have withdrawn all D60 models for some reason. They're all pushing the D5000 now =/

congrats! From the reviews, it's supposed to be fantastic!
and the d40 & d60 bodies have been discontinued as far as I've heard.

Congrats! I like the style of the photo, too.
You're brave to start out using full Manual mode! I use Av about 90% of the time, Tv 5% for creative purposes, and Manual the remaining when I'm either using flash or when I want a certain look before I PP the photos.

Wiki: DSLR, Bokeh, and Depth of Field and you'll find your answers. It's just too much to try and explain.
I think it's good to start out with a small P&S because although you may not have the technical skills, you'll be able to practice your creativity and concepts. I think that's what helped me shoot abnormal and interesting photos, but make them 'pop' using my DSLR.

So, I've sold my 40D and Tamron 17-50 lens and have a 16-35L mk1 on the way and realized that I feel like I'm spending GOBS of money into this hobby. haha If someone told me back in February that in 5 months, I would no longer have any of my original photography equipment and instead have two L lenses, a baller 50mm prime lens, a 1D MarkII, and spending 3 times my original budget, I would have never believed them.

I really like the ducky shots, too!
I don't know if that was your concept, but the photos are a bit under exposed.
I like how it looks on the other photos, but I think it would give more 'pop' if you added a bit more color and brightness in the ducky shot.
But it's still so cute!

Anyways, I'm clueless with the Nikon format.
For my church dongseng's birthday, I want to get her a prime lens for her D60 without breaking the bank.
She's been salivating over my Sigma 50mm 1.4 and I told her I would get her a cheap Nikon format prime lens.

I ran into a Nikon 50mm f1.8 AIS prime lens and was wondering if it will fit on her D60.
I know it's full time manual (manual focusing and manual aperture setting(?)) but I just want to make sure it will work with her D60 body before I purchase it.
Here's an example. (It looks like it fits on a D40 so I'm probably safe, just want to make sure)
http://www.flickr.com/photos/74185915@N00/458251175/

The seller has told me that it does indeed work on the D60 as well as all Nikon formats, just wanted a little bit more confidence.

Thanks in advance!

you are correct, it will mount but will not meter or autofocus on a D60. nikon f-mount has remained relatively unchanged since the 1960's.

+colors were edited on all D<
hehe, I love taking pictures of my dog!

Ah, I have a question. Sometimes, it's really difficult for my Nikon D70 to focus on some things, usually if I'm trying to take a macro shot of something. Is there an easier way I can make it focus besides just moving around and focusing on other things and just playing around with it until I get it? Even my Canon point and shoot focuses with macro much easier. And I'm using a Tamrom 18-200mm macro lens? Some shots even come out a little blurry (maybe it's just the way I shoot though).

Sorry, I'm an amateur :3

instead of the f1.8 E series ai-s lens thats the lens your showed..
get her the 50mm f1.8 AI-S lens or the 50mm F1.4 Ai-s
cause the f1.8 e series ai-s lens isnt so sharp..

Different lenses have different minimum focus distance - in your case (tamron 18-200mm), you'll need to be at least 0.45m (1.47 ft) away in order to get a focus lock on the subject. Just aim your camera on your subject, hold the shutter button half way and take a few steps back if the subject is still not in focus. When you eventually get into the lens minimum focus distance, your camera will automatically lock on (assuming you held down your shutter button halfway while taking a few steps back).

Im really diggin your set smile.gif, just wondering do you have any first hand experience with the 17-35mm?
Ive really been contemplating between the 17-55 and 17-35. Ideally i want the 17-55, but i hear its more prone to flares/ghostrings compared to the 17-35mm?
Between the two, i hear the 17-55 is sharper wide open, but generally more softer when stopping down below F11 (for landscape photography)? Would you agree with these statements?

i havent used the 17-35 much .. i have the 24-70mm mounted almost all the time with the d3
17-35 is for fx and 17-55 is for dx
both lenses are very sharp wide open no doubt.. but the 17-35 is sharper..
but if you have a dx format camera i would recommend the the tamron 17-50mm
if you want to shoot sharp at f2.8
its sharper than the nikkor 17-55 only at that f stop though..
though these lenses sharpest peak point is at f4.. so it not for landscatpe photography there are other lenses out there.. and after f11.. it isnt so great...
the tokina 11-16 f/2.8 is the sharpest lens i ever used.. or i would recommend..
its in to buy list.. atm..

here is sample of the d3 @ f/11

d300 @ f11
